Chapter 836: Fighting Together 45

The rain gradually subsided, but the chill grew more biting. Xiao Yi stood on the street corner, watching Xiao Yu being taken to the rescue vehicle by the police. His heart felt as if a huge rock was pressing down on him, so heavy that he could hardly breathe. The rain dripped down his hair and slid across his cheeks, and the cold feeling made him shiver slightly.

"Uncle, you must come to see me!" Xiaoyu's voice echoed in his ears, with a hint of trembling and reluctance.

Xiao Yi clenched his fists, his nails digging deep into his palms. The pain made him a little more sober. He knew that he couldn't hesitate, let alone stop. This disaster was far from over, and the device in his hand might be the only clue to solve all these mysteries.

On the streets, rainwater formed small streams, washing away the rubble and debris. In the distance, a few ambulances and police cars flashed their red and blue lights, bringing a faint glimmer of hope to this shattered city. Survivors gathered in groups of two or three, their faces filled with fear and bewilderment. Some sobbed softly, while others stared blankly into space, as if questioning why all this had happened.

Xiao Yi took a deep breath and forced himself to calm down. He looked down at the device in his hand. It was a palm-sized metal box with intricate patterns carved on its surface and a faintly glowing crystal embedded in the center. This was the only clue he had found in the underground laboratory, and it was also the key to his next move.

"We must find the answer as soon as possible." He whispered to himself, his voice particularly clear in the empty street.

He began walking deeper into the city. The windows of most of the buildings lining the streets were shattered, and the broken signs swayed in the wind, making a creaking sound. The air was filled with a burnt smell, mixed with the dampness of rain, giving people an indescribable feeling of oppression.

Not long after walking, Xiao Yi suddenly heard a burst of hurried footsteps behind him. He turned back vigilantly and found that it was a young policeman walking towards him quickly.

"Sir, please wait a moment!" the policeman shouted, with a hint of urgency in his voice.

Xiao Yi stopped, feeling somewhat puzzled. The policeman walked up to him and panted, saying, "Sir, we are organizing the evacuation of the survivors. Please come with us to a safe place."

Xiao Yi shook his head, his tone firm: "Thank you, but I still have things to deal with."

The police officer frowned, clearly puzzled by his response. “Sir, this situation is very dangerous. You shouldn’t act alone.”

Xiao Yi was silent for a moment, then whispered: "I know, but I have to do this. This is related to the safety of more people."

The police officer stared into his eyes, as if trying to discern something from his expression. After a moment, he sighed, "Okay, but please be careful. If you need anything, feel free to contact us."

Xiao Yi nodded and watched the police leave. He knew that he could not turn back.

As they continued walking, the streets gradually became empty, as if the entire city had fallen into a dead silence. Only the sound of rain and wind echoed in their ears, as if telling some kind of silent mourning. Xiao Yi's pace became faster and faster, and the feeling of uneasiness in his heart became stronger and stronger.

Suddenly, his eyes were drawn to a building not far away. It was a partially destroyed high-rise, its roof's exposed steel bars resembling the skeleton of a giant beast. On the side of the building, he vaguely spotted a familiar symbol—a red triangle with an eye carved into its center.

"It's right there." Xiao Yi said in a low voice, with a hint of determination in his eyes.

He quickened his pace, heading towards the building. However, just as he was about to approach, a shrill alarm suddenly sounded, shattering the surrounding silence. Then, several red lasers shot out from the building, interweaving in the air to form a huge net.

Xiao Yi stopped immediately and looked around vigilantly. He knew that he had triggered some kind of defense mechanism.

"It seems that the secrets here are deeper than I thought." He muttered to himself and tightened his grip on the device in his hand.

At this moment, a mechanical voice came from the building: "No entry for unauthorized persons. Please leave immediately, otherwise compulsory measures will be taken."

Xiao Yi did not retreat, but took a step forward: "I have important things to investigate, I must go in."

The mechanical voice sounded again: "Warning is invalid, activate the defense system."

Before he finished speaking, several drones flew out of the building and quickly surrounded Xiao Yi. Their guns were pointed at him, emitting a cold metallic luster.

Xiao Yi took a deep breath, quickly pulled out a controller from his pocket, and pressed the button on it. The crystal on the device suddenly emitted a dazzling light, and the drones lost power the moment they came into contact with the light and fell to the ground.

"It really works." Xiao Yi breathed a sigh of relief, but he did not relax his vigilance.

He walked quickly into the building and found that the space inside was much larger than he had imagined. The walls were covered with complex pipes and wires, and in the center was a huge control console with a screen flashing various data and images.

Xiao Yi walked to the console and carefully examined the information on the screen. As he operated, pictures gradually appeared - research records from the underground laboratory, experimental data from the energy device, and... a warning of an impending greater disaster.

"This...this is impossible..." Xiao Yi's face turned pale and his fingers trembled slightly.

The screen shows that this natural disaster is just a prelude, and a greater disaster will come soon. All of this is related to a secret project called "Project Apocalypse".
