Chapter 46 Loving You.
“Nan Nan…” Gu Wan squeezed Lu Nange’s hand tightly and then suddenly let go. “We’ll wait for you on the rooftop.”
A series of roars echoed from afar.
Someone asked in a trembling voice, "Brother Da, they're getting closer!"
"The elderly, children, and women, get out of here first!" Da Ge gripped his knife tightly. "Brothers, follow me!"
"Brother Da, what do you mean? Do you think I can't lift a knife?" A short-haired woman in the crowd spoke up.
"Exactly! Are we supposed to hide behind you for the rest of our lives?" Several women gripped their weapons tightly, their eyes flashing with an alarming light.
Da Ge took a deep breath: "Those who want to stay, come behind me!"
He turned to Chi Yanzhou and the others, clasping his hands in a deep fist salute: "Brothers, we're entrusting our families to you! In case something happens to us..."
Seeing that Gu Wan and the others had already gone upstairs, Lu Nange grabbed the Tang sword in her hand and said, "You grown men, stop dawdling!"
Da Ge's face was filled with disbelief...
My eyes followed Lu Nange's figure as she rushed out.
Suddenly noticing the small, thin figure behind Lu Nange: "Kid! Young lady, there's a kid following you..."
Before he finished speaking, two golden beams shot out from Lu Beiye's hands, and the two zombies in the front row exploded in the head.
Lu Nange darted into the horde of zombies behind her, heads rolling as her blade flashed.
Lu Nange slashed at them one by one with her sword.
Lu Xici, He Zhuo, and the others were all incredibly fierce.
Sparks flew from Chi Yanzhou's hand as the zombie convulsed and collapsed, filling the air with a burnt stench.
Da Ge and his group were still reeling from the loss of life and death.
I was startled again by the ferocious fighting power of Lu Nange and her group!
The man stammered, "Brother Da... that kid could kill all of us by himself!"
Da Ge's Adam's apple bobbed, and he slapped Wei Hao hard: "Rat...was my attitude towards Big Brother and Big Sister pretty friendly today?"
Dongzi: "Brother Da, you're giving them a sour look. Shouldn't that be considered friendly, like telling them to behave themselves?"
Da Ge...
In a short while, Lu Nange and the others cleared away the zombies.
Perhaps because they had just mutated, these zombies had not yet formed crystal cores.
Lu Nange pouted and took Lu Beiye's hand, walking back.
Lu Xici and the others followed closely behind, while He Zhuo and Gu Qi walked backwards cautiously, scanning their surroundings in case of any trouble.
Da Ge rubbed his face with both hands and forced a smile. He felt that he should be kind and a little obsequious at this moment.
But in the stark white light of the flashlight, his face looked particularly eerie.
"Brother Da? Just say what you want to say. You're laughing like a ghost in the middle of the night!" Wei Hao couldn't help but complain.
Several people around couldn't help but laugh, and Da Ge, enraged, kicked him, yelling, "What the hell are you laughing at! Shut the hell up!"
Lu Nange ignored their commotion and went straight upstairs.
When Lu Xici and his group passed by Da Ge, they greeted him, "Da Ge, we're going upstairs. You can make your own arrangements."
Da Ge: "Alright, guys!"
Da Ge waved to their retreating figures, then turned around and said, "Gangzi and Dongzi... you guys guard downstairs."
After saying that, he strode up and led the others to climb to the roof.
Rooftop.
Hearing the commotion, Gu Wan, Chi Yi, and Ji Xian stood guard by the door and window with their weapons, their expressions tense.
The others sat together, and even the children were unusually quiet, not making a sound.
Gu Wan and the others breathed a sigh of relief only after hearing Lu Nange and Lu Beiye's voices.
She opened the door: "Nan Nan, are you alright?"
"It's alright, Sister Wanwan."
The crowd stirred, each rushing towards their loved ones and whispering amongst themselves.
However, amidst the noise, Lu Nange and Lu Beiye exchanged a glance, their eyes suddenly turning cold.
There was a "hoho" sound coming from inside the room.
The two gripped their flashlights tightly and followed the sound inside.
Gu Wan grabbed Lu Nange: "Nannan, what's wrong?"
Lu Nange glanced at her sideways and gently shook her head.
Gu Wan understood, released her hand, and silently mouthed, "Be careful."
He then turned to Lu Xici and the others: "Brother, Brother Ci, go in and take a look!"
Nan Nan and A Ye went inside the house; I wonder what they discovered!
Da Ge and the others also heard Gu Wan's words, and they all turned on their flashlights, the beams crisscrossing and finally settling on the corner—
Lu Nange and Lu Beiye were standing there. Under the cold light, a curled-up woman slowly raised her head, her eyes wary.
"Don't come any closer!" The woman's voice was like sandpaper rubbing, dry and hoarse.
When Da Ge saw her face clearly, his pupils contracted: "Wen Qing?"
Wen Qing held the child in her arms tightly, her voice trembling: "Don't touch my child..."
Lu Nange stared at her, carefully choosing her words: "Is your child... sick?"
"She's fine!" Wen Qing suddenly exclaimed excitedly.
Her eyes, bloodshot and hidden beneath her disheveled hair, cried out: "My darling is perfectly fine! Go away...go away! Don't scare her..."
Behind Lu Nange, the crowd silently followed Da Ge's gestures and slowly retreated towards the door.
Lu Xici and his group quietly approached Lu Nange and her brother from behind.
"Sister Wenqing," Lu Nange said softly, "Don't be nervous, we won't hurt you and Guai Guai!"
"Can we take a look at your baby?" Lu Nange tentatively approached.
Wen Qing suddenly arched her back, pressing the child in her arms tightly against her chest, her eyes as fierce as a trapped beast.
Da Ge spoke up at the right moment: "Wen Qing, these older brothers and sisters are all very capable. Why don't you ask them to take a look at your daughter?"
"Really?" A sickly light suddenly flashed in Wen Qing's cloudy eyes: "You can save her?"
She handed the child in front of her with trembling hands.
When the child was fully unfolded, everyone gasped—
The little girl's limbs were tightly bound together with strips of cloth.
The gag in his mouth was tightly strangled, and from his neck up, dense strips of cloth wrapped around his face, leaving only his facial features exposed.
Its grayish-white eyes darted wildly in their sockets, and its bound body twitched incessantly, emitting faint "hoarse" sounds.
"Wen Qing, are you crazy!" Da Ge's roar shattered the silence.
In a flash, Lu Xici had snatched the child away, while Da Ge simultaneously restrained Wen Qing's arms.
Wen Qing let out a heart-wrenching scream: "Give it back to me! That's my child!"
The little girl, laid flat on the table, was writhing wildly.
Saliva mixed with blood kept spilling from the corners of his mouth as he frantically gnawed at the wad of cloth in his mouth.
Lu Nange looked at Wen Qing, who was being held down, and said softly, "Sister Wen Qing, she's in a lot of pain."
Wen Qing's body suddenly stiffened.
She slowly turned her eyes, her gaze falling on the twisted, writhing figure on the desk.
The little one who used to sweetly call out "Mama" is now reduced to nothing but instinctive twitches.
The madness in his eyes receded like the tide, revealing the dry despair beneath.
After a long silence, she managed to squeeze out a few words in a hoarse voice: "Could you give me... a knife?"
Da Ge leaned down and looked at her: "Wen Qing, even ants try to survive. Only by living can you wait for the world to get better. Don't you want to see it for your daughter again?"
"Give me a knife, please?" she repeated, her voice eerily calm.
Da Ge unconsciously tightened his grip: "What are you doing?"
Wen Qing raised her head, her eyes frighteningly clear: "She was brought into this world by me, and it's my turn to send her off."
Chi Yi silently flipped his wrist, handing over the dagger.
"Thanks."
Wei Hao's voice abruptly cut in, his deliberately lowered tone sounding rather jarring: "Everyone else... went next door..."
No one answered.
The figures, some sitting and some leaning, were scattered throughout the classroom.
Wen Qing crawled on her knees to the desk and slowly knelt down beside her daughter.
The first rays of dawn pierced through the dust-shrouded glass, casting a golden silhouette on the mother and daughter.
"Sweetie, I'm sorry, it's Mommy's fault for not protecting you!"
"Mommy loves you."
Her bending motion was one of sacrificial devotion; as her trembling lips touched her daughter's bluish-gray forehead...
A tear fell onto the blade of the dagger.
