Chapter 45 Da Ge
She mechanically repeated the process, slicing once more, until Li Shouyi's body stopped convulsing.
"Mom?" A childish voice sounded from behind.
Wen Qing trembled, and the blood-stained knife clattered to the ground.
"Don't look!"
"Don't come any closer! Don't come any closer!"
She screamed and turned around, only to see the door being slowly slashed open by some kind of sharp object.
He Jiawen fiddled with a scalpel in his hand: "Even if the deal falls through, we can still be on good terms. I'm here to collect my 'goods'."
Wen Qing grabbed a knife from beside her feet and held it in front of her daughter, drops of blood dripping from the blade onto the ground: "Get out!"
"Your husband has already sold our daughter to me! How can I leave if you don't give me our daughter back?"
Wen Qing held a fruit knife in one hand, pointing it at He Jiawen, and pushed her daughter towards a corner with the other.
"Don't come any closer! Li Shouyi is dead. His affair with you has nothing to do with my daughter and me! Get out!"
As the two confronted each other, a cracking sound, as if bones were being dislocated, suddenly rang out in the dead silence.
He Jiawen's sinister smile was still frozen on his face as a bluish-gray hand gripped his ankle.
Li Shouyi's body sprang up in an ergonomically unnatural position, his teeth piercing He Jiawen's carotid artery.
Warm blood spurted out in a fan shape, with a few drops splashing directly onto Wen Qing's trembling eyelashes.
She shuddered, and her pupils contracted sharply.
He bent down, scooped up his daughter, and rushed down the corridor: "Zombies! Zombies! Get up!"
A piercing scream tore through the night sky.
The once-dormant kindergarten erupted into chaos, with people scattering like ants doused with boiling water, pushing and shoving their way into the corridor.
As soon as the man in the next room opened his door, he saw, in the moonlight, a hunched figure lying on top of another body, feasting heartily.
The sticky sound of flesh and bone separating caused his stomach to spasm.
"A monster—!"
Li Shouyi suddenly looked up, his cloudy whites rolled upwards, and bits of flesh still clung to the corner of his mouth.
He Jiawen's body on the ground was twisted and standing up at an odd angle, his cervical vertebrae making a grinding sound.
"Heh...heh..."
Two dark figures shot into the crowd like arrows released from a bow.
The first to suffer was the screaming man, whose cheek was torn off by a zombie.
Blood splattered on the children's drawing on the wall, staining the sunflowers dark red.
Chi Yanzhou, on night duty, grabbed Lu Xici's shoulder, the beam of his flashlight flickering violently in the darkness: "Brother Ci, go wake them up! I'll go check the situation!"
The classroom door was suddenly pushed open, and the moment Lu Xici rushed in, Lu Nange and the others had already grabbed their weapons and were ready for battle.
"Brother, what happened?" Lu Nange asked in a low voice, her fingers unconsciously tightening around the knife handle.
"It's still unclear. Ayan went to check ahead!" Before Lu Xici finished speaking, Chi Yanzhou ran back from the end of the corridor, followed by two stumbling figures.
Only after getting closer could I see that it was Wei Hao and a girl.
"Brother Ci!" Wei Hao pushed the trembling girl next to him forward.
"Someone behind us has turned into a zombie! This is my girlfriend, Qin Hui. Please look after her! I have to go back and help Da Ge and the others!"
Qin Hui clung tightly to Wei Hao's clothes, her nails almost digging into his flesh: "Don't go... Wei Hao, I'm scared!"
Wei Hao squeezed his eyes shut, then opened them again with a firm gaze: "Huihui, Brother Da saved our lives."
Qin Hui's fingers loosened little by little, and tears rolled down her cheeks silently.
Just then, a series of chaotic footsteps approached—Da Ge led a group of people to retreat to the corner of the corridor.
He was covered in blood and just happened to hear Wei Hao's last words.
"Rat!" Da Ge patted Wei Hao's shoulder, panting heavily. His bloodied hand left a dark red handprint on Wei Hao's clothes. "I'll remember this favor!"
Using the last glimpse of her flashlight, Lu Nange made out the group of people—men, including Da Ge, were all gathered in the outer circle.
They formed a human wall to protect the trembling elderly and children in the middle.
"Da-ge! Let's break out of here!"
"The gate! Opening the gate might be the only way to survive!"
Da Ge wiped the blood and foam from his face and shouted angrily, "Bullshit! There are even more of those things outside!"
He suddenly turned to Chi Yanzhou and the others, his voice lowering: "Rooftop...you're taking the elderly and children up?"
Before anyone could answer, he added, "We'll clean up the zombies down there."
"If...if we don't come back..." Da Ge's Adam's apple bobbed. "...they'll be in your hands."
Everyone looked at Chi Yanzhou, and Chi Yanzhou looked at Lu Nange.
Lu Nange...
"Brother Da, what are you waiting for? Let's fight it out ourselves!"
Lu Nange: "Wanwan, you, Ji Xian, and Chi Yi take the others upstairs. Don't open the door for anyone except us!"
Gu Wan nodded.
Suddenly, Da Ge knelt down on one knee and tied the loose shoelaces of an elderly woman with white hair.
“Grandma,” he said, his rough fingers smoothing the old woman’s trouser leg, “I’ll be back soon.”
The old woman cupped Da Ge's face in her hands, which were as smooth as tree bark: "Grandma is waiting for you."
Her turbid tears fell onto Da Ge's blood-stained clothes, spreading out in a dark pattern.
