Chapter 59: Food Distribution at Midnight (Part 2)

"It's okay, wife. I'm a grown man and I'm not afraid of being tired. I'll go and rest after dawn when I can see the road clearly." Yun the Butcher said with a smile.

Butcher Yun finished speaking, then lit a torch and had Big Brother Yun stand beside the donkey cart to illuminate it. He and Zhang, standing on either side of the cart, simultaneously untied the ropes. When Butcher Yun lifted the oilcloth covering the cart, Zhang and Big Brother Yun gaped in astonishment.

"You don't have to be too surprised. When we went to the city to buy food today, we found that the price of food in the city was lower than we thought. In addition, this is the food bought together by the whole village. We don't buy much at home." Butcher Yun said as he moved the basket down.

"Mom, you hold the torch. I'm strong, so I'll go move the basket." Brother Yun said as he handed the torch to Zhang.

Zhang took the torch and stood beside the donkey cart, watching Yun the Butcher and Yun Lao Da quickly unload everything from the cart. It must be said that strong people work faster.

Then, Yun the Butcher and Yun Lao Da moved the grain and other things that they had unloaded from the donkey cart in the morning and placed them back on the donkey cart.

"Wife, come and take a look." Butcher Yun called Zhang in a low voice.

When Zhang approached Yun the Butcher, she saw the plump, golden corn kernels in Yun's hand. She looked up at Yun the Butcher in surprise. The quality of these corn kernels was too good.

"Let me tell you, wife, these corn kernels, the big potatoes in the basket next to them, and the basket of cotton wrapped in oilcloth were all bought by Yiyi. However, the cotton seeds have not been picked yet, so we need time to clean them up ourselves. Look, the things your daughter bought are not only of good quality, but also cheap. How about it, are you surprised?" Yun the butcher said proudly.

Zhang looked at the big potatoes in the basket, then lifted a corner of the oilcloth to see the big cotton balls inside. She came back excitedly.

"Boss, how come Yiyi bought this by herself? Shouldn't you have taken the child to the store to buy it?" Zhang asked anxiously.

"Our Yiyi found this in the alley, and then she asked me for money and bought it herself. When I saw the corn kernels, potatoes and cotton, I was even more surprised than you. I thought at that time that our little Yiyi was really smart and capable." Yun the Butcher said proudly.

"Dad, my sister is so capable. She can even buy things by herself." Brother Yun also praised.

"That's not all. When your sister bought these things, she also bought a hen. The young man selling the hen said it lays an egg every day. The hen is here, come and take a look." Butcher Yun took Zhang and Big Brother Yun to see the hen. Zhang and Big Brother Yun were very happy to see the tied hen. As long as they took good care of the hen, they would be able to collect eggs every day. If they saved them for a few days, they could provide some nutrition for the family.

"Dad, from now on, my brother, sister and I will feed this chicken." Boss Yun said happily.

"Okay, no problem. This hen will be yours to feed from now on, but you have to avoid people when feeding it so that no one finds out. Well, let's work first, and when we take a break at noon tomorrow, I'll tell you in detail how well Yiyi performed today." After saying that, Yun the butcher moved the baskets of potatoes, the baskets of corn, and the baskets of cotton onto the donkey cart.

"Wife, I went to the city today and bought 100 kilograms of corn flour, 200 kilograms of potatoes, and 100 kilograms of sweet potatoes for our family." Yun the butcher said, pointing to the baskets he was going to move.

"Okay, this food will be enough for us to eat for a while." Zhang said.

"The owner of the grain shop also sold me a batch of corn flour at a low price. I checked it and the mold is not serious. The price is ten cents per catty, which is very low. The village chief said that each family will get eighty catties. We will eat the corn flour first. Feed it to the donkey and the hen. After we finish eating it, we can eat the good grain." said Yun the butcher.

"Boss, the owner of the grain shop is really kind and the price he offers is very low. This is a great help to our village." Zhang said excitedly.

Butcher Yun and Brother Yun loaded the food they had bought today onto the donkey cart. Butcher Yun moved the two large earthenware jars he had bought to one side, along with the baskets of fat, pig offal, and pig feet. Then, Butcher Yun found the baskets of cabbage and kelp and put them together.

Suddenly, Yun the Butcher remembered that he still had eggs and ginger, so he quickly went to find the basket and moved them together.

"Wife, these are two large earthenware jars I bought today. I put some cabbage in them, which we're going to eat. This basket is kelp, which we also bought ourselves. These one hundred eggs are also ours. Next to them are some seasonings I bought. These pig offal are also ours. Wife, we've already cleaned up the pig offal in the city. Please pickle them tomorrow so we can eat them later."

"We bought a total of 100 kilograms of this fat meat. The village chief stipulated that each family cannot buy more than 4 kilograms. We will divide these pig's feet when the time comes. Whoever wants them can come to me."

"We bought 200 kilograms of ginger. The village chief stipulated that each household cannot buy more than 8 kilograms. This ginger is fresh. Wife, please keep it for later." Butcher Yun pointed at the items and introduced them to Zhang. Boss Yun was busy loading them onto the donkey cart.

"Wife, I remembered that I bought some red dates. After the villagers have distributed them, we can keep the rest for ourselves. They are in this basket." Butcher Yun opened the basket and showed it to Zhang.

"These are the steamed buns and dumplings we bought today. Put them where you can easily reach them and we will eat them tomorrow morning." Butcher Yun handed the steamed buns and dumplings wrapped in lotus leaves to Zhang.

"Okay, boss. I've remembered everything. You bought a lot of things today. You and Yiyi must have visited many shops today, right? You two have worked hard today." Zhang said with concern.

"The things we bought today are enough for us to eat for a while. We don't have to worry about not having enough food. So, this trip today is worth it." Yun the butcher said happily.

"Yes, we will discuss how much other food we need to buy later. We have a large family, so it's always a good idea to prepare more food." Zhang said happily.

Yun the Butcher and Zhang packed up the items Yun the Butcher had bought today and loaded them onto the donkey cart. They also placed two large earthenware jars on top of the cart to store miscellaneous items, to be removed when they needed to fill it with water.

The three of them worked frantically for nearly half an hour, packing up everything that needed to be put on the donkey cart. Zhang placed the basket containing the hens on the outermost edge of the cart, padded it with half a basket of straw. The hens' beaks were still tied, but they would be untied tomorrow when they were fed. Tomorrow, they would discard the straw under the basket and replace it with fresh straw. This way, the cart wouldn't get too dirty.

Butcher Yun and Zhang discussed their purchases and gathered their money. He then checked the donkey cart. He saw that there was still a third of the space available for storage. After distributing the grain and loading it onto the cart, there would still be a little space left. The shelves outside the cart would also be plenty of space for people to sit on.
