Chapter 5 The Child
The condenser was finished at 10 PM.
It's a device similar to a gashapon machine, with a huge glass ball on top and a knob on the bottom.
The condenser can condense 500ml of pure water every hour. Once the glass bulb is full, the water needs to be collected in another container before the condenser will start condensing again.
This is a bit of a problem; she can't possibly watch over this condenser all day long.
There are still two days of welfare period left, so she still needs to scavenge more supplies. It seems she can only collect water at night, which will amount to about 6 bottles a night. If she wakes up early in the morning, she can collect another bottle.
About 7-8 bottles a day is not bad.
Jiang Baiyue nodded, completely satisfied.
For the rest of the time, she opened the chat area, occasionally checking messages to exchange for empty water bottles or other containers, and occasionally operating on the base control panel.
After filling two bottles with water, it was already late at night. Jiang Baiyue took out a pillow, lay down on the wooden floor, and began to fall asleep.
Sleeping on the wooden floor wasn't comfortable; she tossed and turned for a while before feeling something poking her.
It's a bit damp, and the smell isn't very pleasant.
Tomorrow I'll have to try my best to find a mattress or sofa, and if that doesn't work, I'll find a blanket, or maybe just exchange water with someone else.
"Mother--!"
"Mom! Mom!"
Jiang Baiyue covered her ears. This night-walking monster was really dedicated to his job, still tempting people in the middle of the night.
?
That's not right. She's inside the base. The Night Stalkers have some brains and won't waste their energy trying to lure her.
Moreover, the base is currently in a safe period and is automatically blocking out the sounds of the night-stalking monsters.
Jiang Baiyue got up, pushed open the door and walked into the yard, where she saw a little girl.
"Sister, sister, did you see someone so very tall with braids?"
"I, I'm looking for, I'm looking for my mother."
The little girl with two little tufts of hair on her head was covered in sweat and looked extremely tired. After saying a few words, she collapsed at the entrance of the wooden fence.
Jiang Baiyue immediately understood that the little girl and her mother had not found a safe place to hide, nor had they found the zombie hunters' camp.
It's probably because the increased pressure at night caused it to dissipate.
"I didn't see it."
The little girl's eyes were filled with tears, and she finally couldn't hold back and burst into tears.
"Wow! Wow! I miss my mom, but she went to find my dad..."
Jiang Baiyue picked at her ear. After the little girl finished crying, she was still annoyed and didn't want to take care of the child. The little girl, however, started to speak quite logically.
"Sister, I... I can help you with the chores, could you give me something to eat?"
At home, she would help her mother with chores, and then her mother and father would reward her with snacks and fruit.
At school, if she helps the teacher carry something, the teacher will give her candy.
She thought that this way she could make an exchange with Jiang Baiyue.
Jiang Baiyue pondered. To be honest, she wasn't heartless enough to ignore the little girl and not care whether she lived or died, but in this dangerous world, she didn't want to raise a child.
The little girl offered to work in exchange for food, and Jiang Baiyue thought it was acceptable, but decided to observe her first.
"Okay, come in."
The little girl wobbled to her feet, pushed open the wooden gate to go inside, then stopped: "Sister, I don't have any coins..."
Jiang Baiyue walked over, opened the door, and accessed the base's control panel, allowing the little girl to enter.
"The daily temporary check-in fee is 3 coins; you can owe it to me for now."
The little girl nodded, clutching the hem of her clothes. "Mmm. Thank you, big sister."
She had no concept of rent; she only knew that she felt at ease after coming in.
...
Jiang Baiyue didn't wake up until dawn the next morning.
Sensing movement in her arms, Jiang Baiyue patted the little girl, Gu Zilin.
"Get up and remember your job. Don't go outside the fence unless you see your mother, or it will be dangerous."
Gu Zilin sat up, rubbing her sleepy eyes, and nodded like a chick pecking at rice.
After Jiang Baiyue finished speaking, she took out an apple and a bunch of bananas to eat breakfast, and gave two bananas to Gu Zilin.
"Do you know your mom's nickname? If you do, just keep sending her private messages, and she'll reply when she sees them."
"I know, I'll send it now."
Gu Zilin knew that the game panel had popped up automatically as soon as she arrived. She only found out how to see it after her mother asked her, since her mother had added her as a friend.
Jiang Baiyue took food, an iron axe, and the iron shovel she had replaced yesterday and went out.
The base has a powerful resident management system, allowing her to restrict the entry of residents, so she is not worried about Gu Zilin stealing things and leaving.
Gu Zilin couldn't take away any supplies from the base that didn't belong to her, nor could she damage any buildings or things in the base.
Yesterday she saw a shopping mall and today she plans to plunder it.
After the initial chaos of the first day, many people came to their senses. Some bravely ventured out to scavenge for supplies, while others began searching for a safe base.
Jiang Baiyue hadn't gone far when she saw two people cleaning up zombies at a foot massage parlor.
She avoided the two men, turned into another street, and two men came out of the restaurant in front.
Hey, sis!
Jiang Baiyue recognized the two people from yesterday.
Lin Muzi waved and greeted her: "My name is Lin Muzi, what's yours? I heard that you'll be safe once you find a safe base and a hunter's camp. Do you know where they are?"
"Do you want to come with us? It's not safe to sleep outside at night, and there are monsters constantly trying to lure us in."
Guan Qingqing took out a small cookie and handed it to Jiang Baiyue: "Here you go, are you hungry? Thank you for yesterday. These are the cookies we found. There aren't many, so please don't mind."
"Guan Qingqing, my nickname is Level 1 Disabled Person, let's add each other as friends."
Yesterday, thankfully, the woman in front of them handed them a wooden stick, otherwise they really wouldn't have been able to hold on.
Jiang Baiyue accepted it. Since the other party was willing to give it, she was truly generous, so she didn't stand on ceremony.
“I know a place with a safe base where lights will be on at night. Walk over here, turn right, then right again, and there’s a square there.”
"You need to pay a check-in fee of 3 coins per day. If you submit enough materials to the warehouse, a wooden house will be built for you to live in."
Jiang Baiyue said this to temporarily conceal her status as the owner of the base, and she wasn't worried about being exposed because that's how the safe base in the game worked.
Once there are enough materials in the warehouse, the base will construct the corresponding unlocked buildings.
However, since the base was her own, she only granted permission for the construction of wooden houses.
Guan Qingqing covered her mouth in surprise: "Really? Three coins aren't expensive, we already have 16 coins."
"We just wanted to find a safe place to stay. Last night we hid in an internet cafe, but there were constant noises bothering us, so we couldn't sleep."
Lin Muzi was still shaken. Thinking back on the night's events, she felt that if her willpower had been slightly weaker, she wouldn't have been able to hold on until dawn.
Last night, they spent a long time looking at the discussion area and learned that it was dangerous to be without lights at night. However, when they tried to trade with others, either the other person asked for a price they couldn't afford or they weren't willing to trade.
The mall deducts 50% tax when opening a store, so they can only trade privately with players, and they still got scammed.
After Jiang Baiyue finished speaking, she said goodbye and left.
The zombies aren't very powerful right now, so it's not easy to scavenge for supplies with too many people.
Lin Muzi and Guan Qingqing obviously knew as well, and without saying much, they headed in the direction Jiang Baiyue pointed to to find the safe base.
