Chapter 7 Cough, Poverty, and Love
The car was sandwiched between the two vehicles. The bulletproof glass next to Chen Jiang was cracked by the enemy's bullets, and the bullet head got stuck in the car window.
"Qingjia, keep them under control for now. Chen Jiang, splash water on the ground and their car. Madrid, watch your speed." The attendant calmly issued the orders, and the men did as he said without hesitation.
Tan Qingjia's mental attack could only control so many people for a few seconds, but that was enough.
When the water soaked the ground and the car, Sui Cheng immediately used his second superpower, ice magic, and the road was instantly frozen. Their car skidded, but Madrid quickly stabilized it.
Ice had also formed on the other car, and the hazy chill obscured their vision. To see clearly, they would have to open their car windows.
As soon as the car window was opened, a ball of water shot in, soaking them. Before they could even react, a tingling sensation from the lightning coursed through their bodies. One or two of them were badly shocked, and the car became uncontrollable, crashing directly into the roadside railing.
"Idiots, you don't even know water conducts electricity?" Chen Jiang gave them the middle finger through the window.
Xu Feng had just shaken off the cars surrounding them when an unsteady voice came through his earpiece: "You guys did a good job freezing things up, but could you at least give us a heads-up next time? If it weren't for our driver's good driving skills, we would have already crashed into the guardrail."
The passenger replied, "I'll definitely do it next time."
He glanced back; the cars had stopped chasing him.
"The crisis is temporarily over, but don't let your guard down." After giving the instructions, Sui Cheng went to check on Lu Zhi. Seeing that he was pale and had blood at the corner of his mouth, he frowned and asked, "Are you alright?"
When Lu Zhi heard that he was concerned about her, she immediately smiled and said in a low voice, "It's okay, you'll get used to it."
Lin Zhi turned around and looked at Lu Zhi from the front. She had heard Lu Zhi coughing up blood the whole way and was really afraid that he would die on the road. She couldn't help but ask with concern, "Are you really okay? I've heard you coughing the whole way. Why don't you take some medicine?"
The lawyer's attitude towards others was completely different from his attitude towards his entourage. When he spoke to Lin Zhi, the smile in his eyes had completely disappeared. The speed at which he changed his expression made them all inwardly mutter, "Double standard dog!"
"It's just spitting out a little blood, it won't kill anyone." Lu Zhi's light and arrogant tone made people want to punch him.
"Shut up." To shut him up, the attendant stuffed a few red dates into his mouth.
Lu Zhi was startled and delighted by the sudden contact. Although Sui Cheng had already withdrawn his hand, the sensation of the touch on his lips seemed to linger.
He licked his lips, his expression carrying an indescribable lingering feeling, as if he were savoring something.
“Following up, the encampment is just ahead. Do you think we should stop here, or move to another location?” Xu Feng asked in the headset.
Sui Cheng thought for a moment and said, "If we go somewhere else, the previous group of people will definitely follow us. I know a secluded place."
When he came here on a mission before, there was no such outpost, so he had to find his own place to rest. I guess that place is still there now.
They circled around and finally arrived at the place the attendant had mentioned, an underground supermarket with multiple exits, so they could leave at any time should an attack occur.
“No need to set up camp, there won’t be time to pack up. Everyone has had a hard time resting in the car these past few days.” The passenger glanced at the law enforcement officer in the back seat and said, “You’re not feeling well, so this seat is for you. I’ll squeeze in with Captain Xu.”
He was about to leave when Lu Zhi quickly grabbed him, saying unhappily, "No need, it's just the two of us, why squeeze in? You're not allowed to go."
Sui Cheng and he locked eyes, the atmosphere tense, as if they were facing off. After a while, Lu Zhi's tone softened, as if he were pleading: "I don't feel safe when you're not here."
Chen Jiang and the others: "..." Could this reason be any more fake?
"I'll sit outside." The attendant placed his bag on the seat with a stern face and urged the lawyer to sit inside.
"Divide into two groups to check the surrounding area. If you encounter any alien species, don't rush in. Observe the situation first. Madrid and Linzhi stay behind, Chen Jiang and Qingjia go together, and Zhang Meng and I go together."
"What about me?" Lu Zhi raised his hand with a resentful look in his eyes. Sui Cheng always seemed to forget about him. Was his presence really that weak?
"Do whatever you want, just don't die here," the attendant said, glancing at him.
Lu Zhi stretched out his long legs and propped them up in front of him, then smiled with narrowed eyes, "What if I go with you?"
The attendant coldly replied, "I don't bring any burdens with me."
Hearing Sui Cheng describe him as a burden, Lu Zhi felt annoyed and reached out to hook Sui Cheng's chin, but then remembered the three rules and withdrew his hand. He said to Sui Cheng in an ambiguous tone, "Captain Sui, how could you forget so quickly? I have plant-type abilities and can communicate with plants. Aren't you here to find the advanced species stationed here? Such a good opportunity to use me, why don't you cherish it?"
"Then why aren't you doing anything?" The attendant glanced at him and strode out.
As Lu Zhi watched his retreating figure, he suddenly realized something and laughed, "Oh, you were deliberately trying to provoke me, weren't you?"
"Cough cough cough, Captain, slow down." Lu Zhi hurried after him, coughing as he spoke.
The passenger did slow down and turned back to warn, "You'd better hold back your cough."
Lu Zhi put his hand on his shoulder and said with a smile, "I wonder if Captain Sui has ever heard the saying that there are three things in this world that cannot be hidden."
“Poverty, cough, and love.” He turned his head to look at the face of the person in his carriage, and it felt as if their warm breath was on his cheek.
He pushed the person away with his arm and said coldly, "Can you please not stand so close every time?"
"I'm afraid you won't hear me." Lu Zhi said in a nonchalant tone, sounding utterly irreverent.
Zhang Meng glanced at them several times, feeling as if he had been ignored by the two who were "flirting".
It's one thing for the law enforcement officers to act strangely, but why is even the captain acting so oddly?
Zhang Meng thought and thought but couldn't find the answer, so he could only look at the sky and then at the ground.
They were in an abandoned shopping mall, the smell of decay filling the air, and shards of glass crunching softly underfoot.
The riders walked almost silently, a skill honed in battle, but even Lu Zhi was no exception. He walked casually, yet skillfully avoided anything on the ground that might make a sound.
In the beginning, there were quite a few strange creatures in the mall, mostly plants. Even though they were mostly cleared out later, traces of their existence can still be vaguely seen now.
The green shoots growing from the cracks in the wall said it all.
It was quiet all around. Lu Zhi casually plucked a blade of grass that had finally grown and shook it in his hand.
"Plants are truly amazing things. As long as they're not completely dead, burned to ashes, or uprooted, they'll seize any chance to sprout and revive." His sudden exclamation was somewhat eerie.
The passenger couldn't help but ask, "Why are you saying so much?"
"Don't you think I'm somewhat similar to these creatures?" He patted his chest, winked at his entourage, and said playfully, "This also proves that I have a strong will to live and won't die easily."
"Who can say for sure?" The attendant, perhaps influenced by him, said, "Before death comes, no one knows whether they will live or die."
Lu Zhi suddenly grabbed his hand. Perhaps because his expression was too serious, Sui Cheng couldn't shake him off. He only saw Lu Zhi lower his head and whisper in his ear, "If that day ever comes, I will let you live."
"What nonsense are you spouting?" Sui Cheng's heart skipped a beat, then he quickly shook off his hand, left him behind, and strode forward.
He heard Lu Zhi's laughter behind him, and suddenly felt a tickle in his ear. He couldn't help but touch it, and belatedly realized, "Damn, is this guy flirting with me? Is he crazy?"
