Chapter 51 What I gave him can protect him
They were already in Xicheng, and it wouldn't be long before they reached Mengshan, though they would have to travel along a winding mountain road.
Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, Sui Cheng rubbed the vine on his wrist. Even without saying a word, Lu Zhi understood his meaning: to send the vine to scout ahead.
The driver was Yang Xie. Although he didn't see the vines coming out of the window, he sensed something and glanced in the rearview mirror, only to see a glimpse of green.
"The road ahead is closed to cars, we have to walk." Yang Xie parked the car on the side of the road.
Dang Hongyuan picked up the supply bag, but before he could even put it on, Yang Xie snatched it away.
Looking at the attendant and the preceptor, the preceptor didn't even touch the bag before it was carried by the attendant.
He withdrew his hand, feeling inexplicably uneasy. He subconsciously glanced at Yang Xiehe, whose appearance was strikingly different.
Lu Zhi narrowed his eyes, feeling somewhat displeased.
He reached out to take the bag off his passenger's back, but the passenger dodged to the side. He heard him casually say, "With your physique, you shouldn't carry it."
Lu Zhi felt a chill in his heart and really wanted to tell his companion that he really could do it.
The passenger, not understanding the complex emotions in his eyes, patted him on the shoulder and followed them.
There was a path in the middle of the dense forest. Because it had rained the day before yesterday, the path was still muddy, and you could even see traces left along the way, including human footprints and animal tracks.
“These footprints appeared together, it seems to be that group of people again.” Yang Xie squatted down and examined the footprints.
Dang Hongyuan hummed in agreement, then asked, "Is their target us or the things in Mengshan?"
Yang Xie scoffed and said, "Perhaps all of them."
He gazed into the deepest part of Mengshan Mountain, a hint of curiosity appearing on his usually stern face. "What exactly is deep within Mengshan Mountain?"
Dang Hongyuan said in a low voice, "That's why I came, because I wanted to know."
The two of them followed silently.
The vines suddenly sprouted from the side and returned to Suicheng's hand without him noticing.
He glanced at Lu Zhi, and before he could say anything, Lu Zhi leaned closer and whispered, "Found it."
Sui Cheng paused, looked at them, and wondered whether he should tell them directly.
But if they don't say anything, it would be a waste of their time to wander around aimlessly.
I glanced up at the sky. We left Xicheng in the morning, and it's already noon. If we delay any longer, it will be afternoon.
So he still intends to speak.
“Team Leader, I know where Zhong Ling and the others went.” The attendant explained, “I sensed the presence of aliens and superhumans in the cave in Mengshan earlier. It might be them. I vaguely remember the location.”
Dang Hongyuan nodded: "Okay, let's go there and take a look first."
Sui Cheng touched his wrist, letting the vines subtly guide him.
When they reached the halfway point of the mountain, they sensed the presence of the alien species.
The attendant stood in front of the law enforcement officer and whispered, "Take care of yourself."
Lu Zhi muttered to himself, "I'm not that weak."
The attendant looked at him and said earnestly, "I'm afraid you'll vomit blood."
The lawyer's depressed mood immediately improved.
"Here he comes." Dang Hongyuan nudged Yang Xie's arm, watched him draw his weapon, and whispered, "Be careful."
Yang Xie beckoned to him, then, based on the sounds in the forest, located the location of the alien species. "I'll handle this myself. You ride along, and keep an eye on its direction."
The passenger nodded: "Okay."
Yang Xie jumped directly onto the big tree next to him and disappeared.
A few sounds of fighting were heard, and the birds in the forest scattered in all directions.
Dang Hongyuan frowned and said, "We've been discovered."
If the people controlling the aliens were here, their presence would definitely be detected.
However, the more variants that appear, the more it proves that they are on the right track.
"Bang." Yang Xie returned quickly, bringing with him the corpse of the alien species.
Dang Hongyuan quickly stepped forward and indeed saw the number on the alien's body.
"As expected." He kicked the alien aside and said sharply, "Looks like we're heading in the right direction, let's go."
They continued deeper into the area, encountering more and more troublesome alien creatures. The three of them took action and eventually found several corpses in a canyon.
“These people…” Sui Cheng looked at the corpses whose faces were still clearly visible and felt that they looked familiar. After thinking about it carefully, he realized that they seemed to be people from Base One.
"It seems to be one of the superhumans under Zhong Ling's command."
“That’s right,” Yang Xie said. “The wounds on his body were left by the alien species, and there’s still blood here, so they must have gone this way.”
They followed the trail of blood, and the signs of a struggle along the way became increasingly strange.
“This is…” Dang Hongyuan pushed aside the vines at the entrance of the cave.
These vines are new; they look like someone just planted them.
Dang Hongyuan pulled the vines down and frowned, saying, "This looks too much like they deliberately let us find it."
Yang Xie brushed the leaves off his arm and asked, "Shall we go in?"
Dang Hongyuan turned to his companion and asked, "What does the team think?"
Sui Cheng had already habitually touched the vines on his wrist, but this action happened to attract the attention of Yang Xie and Dang Hongyuan.
"The team's wristband is quite unique. I've never seen it before," Dang Hongyuan asked in a casual tone.
As Sui Cheng moved to explain, Lu Zhi spoke first, saying, "I gave it to him; it can protect him."
His words essentially made their ambiguous relationship clear.
Yang Xie narrowed his eyes, his gaze towards Lu Zhi filled with more vigilance and wariness.
As if he hadn't noticed anything, Lu Zhi continued to tease without any guard up, "I have plant-based abilities, so it's not strange that I can control some plants, right?"
He spoke these words lightly, but a closer look at his eyes revealed little emotion.
Unable to contain her nervousness, Sui Cheng grabbed his hand, urging him to talk less.
Lu Zhi enjoyed his initiative and didn't give him a chance to back down. She forcefully inserted her fingers into his, and their fingers intertwined tightly.
"Party leader, don't worry, I'm not a bad person. I just want to protect the passengers. Besides, if you don't go in soon, the people inside might escape."
Upon hearing that there were still people inside, Dang Hongyuan quickly looked into the cave, then exchanged a glance with Yang Xie. He disregarded the law and said sternly, "Let's go in and see who's inside."
Watching them leave, Sui Cheng forcefully pulled his hand away, frowning as he said, "Don't be so impulsive next time."
Lu Zhi shrugged and quickly followed.
Upon venturing deeper into the cave, they discovered that it was actually an experimental field, much larger than the one they had seen in Yancheng, and filled with a great deal of equipment.
Half-dead corpses lay on the ground, all of them from Base One.
"Don't rush, there's something wrong here." Yang Xie stopped Dang Hongyuan, looking around warily.
The room was filled with all sorts of jars, one of which contained a dead alien creature. Each jar was connected to an energy transmission pipe, all leading to the one in the very center.
But the experimental jar in the middle was empty.
