Chapter 12 Garrison

Chapter 12 Garrison

"How do I get there?"

Just after the two drove out of the gas station, they drove for another half hour before finally arriving at the very edge of the city.

The fat man stopped the car and looked at the intersection in front of him, feeling troubled. The two of them had planned to leave the city, but they had no idea where they would end up after leaving the city.

Han Shuo looked up at the sign, thought for a moment, and then gave instructions.

"Go to the left, let's go into the wilderness!"

"boom--!"

Upon receiving the instruction, the fat man stepped on the gas and drove the car to the left.

The sign indicates that the national highway is on the left and the expressway entrance is on the right.

"Just drive along the national highway, try to get away from the city and head towards the countryside."

Han Shuo had thought things through carefully; he was already planning to drive dozens of kilometers away from the city and find a sparsely populated place to camp.

On the day the fog descends, there should be no cars on the highway. If you can get on, that would be the best option, but you'll definitely be stuck at the tollbooth entrance.

Han Shuo knew that the entrance would be packed with vehicles.

Unless the two abandon the car and walk, they definitely cannot get up there at present.

On the way, the two encountered fewer and fewer zombies. Occasionally, they also encountered other vehicles parked on the road, and some survivors even called for help from the roadside.

Han Shuo ignored all of this. Although there is strength in numbers, in the current situation, it is even more important to be wary of people's hearts.

Although the fat man felt a little reluctant, he agreed with Han Shuo's decision. He also knew that it was necessary to be selfish when necessary, and that acting like a saint would only lead to self-destruction.

Although Han Shuo and Fatty hadn't known each other for very long, they had at least been on the brink of life and death together.

During today's breakout, if Fatty had abandoned Han Shuo and escaped alone, he would have had a chance. If Fatty hadn't held off the four zombies at the entrance, Han Shuo's situation would have been far from optimistic.

Since we've come together by chance, it's a kind of fate.

The fat man knew in his heart that without Han Shuo, he would have died even faster.

The two never spoke these words, but they both knew it in their hearts. They were both just trying to survive, and sincerity was the most important thing.

...

The sun was slowly setting in the west.

Midway through the journey, the two stopped for a quick lunch. In the afternoon, the fat man drove the car to a field.

"Park here!"

Han Shuo felt this place was nice; it was quite far from the city and should be a vast expanse of farmland.

"Okay!" the fat man replied, and slowly brought the car to a stop.

After the car stopped, Han Shuo got out and took a good look around.

"Not bad, not bad." Han Shuo was very satisfied.

Although it was once farmland, with winter approaching and no crops remaining, it was already desolate except for a few trees that could be vaguely seen.

Han Shuo chose this location because there were two large greenhouses about 100 meters away.

The entire structure is mostly made of bricks and is about seven or eight meters high. It is supported by an iron frame in the middle and covered with a layer of plastic sheeting.

"Huh? Here?"

The fat man also got out of the car and looked at Han Shuo, immediately guessing what he was thinking.

"How wonderful! Fewer people, fewer zombies, and it's warm inside."

Han Shuo responded with a smile and walked towards the greenhouse.

"Let's go and take a look inside."

The fat man had no choice but to lock the car and follow.

...

"Ha! There are vegetables in here too!"

Stepping into the greenhouse, the fat man was delighted and casually picked a tomato from the side and started eating it.

“At this time of year, not much can be grown outdoors, so these greenhouses are naturally used for growing vegetables.”

Han Shuo continued walking inside. There were quite a few vegetables, but there were only three kinds: tomatoes, lettuce, and celery.

"It looks really nice. It's cold outside now, but the temperature here is just right, warm and cozy."

The fat man wasn't initially interested in the place, but once he came in, he didn't want to leave. It was a bit hot, so he took off his coat.

"Let's find something inside and set up two makeshift beds. It'll be more comfortable than sleeping in the car, right?"

Han Shuo was extremely satisfied with this place.

The plastic sheeting covering the shed obscures the view inside, so the two can simply hide the car without attracting the attention of other survivors. Plus, there are few zombies nearby, making it relatively safe.

Although the fat man was clever, his physical strength was limited. Han Shuo planned to stay here for a while and let the fat man exercise his physical fitness every day.

It would be better to live a peaceful life, but Han Shuo has no heroic ambitions to save all of humanity. He's just an ordinary person; his knife skills are good, but a gun could easily take his life.

"I'll go hide the car first, Fatty, you find something to make a bed."

"Yes, sir!"

Han Shuo took the remote control from the fat man, returned to the car, and drove to the corner between the greenhouse and a few trees. Although it wasn't a blind spot, it was the most secluded corner in the vicinity.

The car should not be too far away from them, in case of any emergencies that may occur in the future.

In less than two hours, the two of them quickly built two simple beds with stones and bricks. They also removed the seat covers and cushions from the car and mixed them with blankets to put underneath, so it wasn't too uncomfortable.

The temperature inside the greenhouse is just right; when sleeping, the two of them only need to cover themselves with their own jackets.

In this way, the two of them finally had a place to camp, so they wouldn't have to sleep in the wilderness.

Before it got completely dark, Han Shuo climbed up the ladder to the top of the shed and looked around at the zombies in the distance.

There weren't many; fewer than ten could be seen with the naked eye, and the closest ones were more than 300 meters away.

There shouldn't be any danger tonight, so Han Shuo decided to deal with them at dawn the next morning.

When it got completely dark, the moonlight shone into the greenhouse, making it not so dark inside.

The two casually took out the food they had brought from the truck and began to eat dinner.

"Fatty, we have plenty of food right now and nothing major is happening, so let's stay here for a while."

“No problem!” At Han Shuo’s house, because of the food shortage, the fat man had never really eaten his fill. Now that there was plenty of food, he was wolfing it down.

"By the way, take this opportunity to not do anything for the time being and work on your physical fitness."

"ah?"

As soon as Han Shuo finished speaking, the fat man stopped. For a homebody like him, exercising every day was worse than death.

"What do you mean 'huh'? You think we can drive forever? I can easily drive 10 kilometers, but what about you? Judging from your build, you'd be exhausted after just one kilometer."

"It's fine if you don't train, but if you can't keep up with me when you run away in the future, don't blame me for abandoning you!" Han Shuo said sternly. Since he had chosen Fatty as his partner, he also hoped that Fatty could live a stable life.

Given the fat man's current physical condition, no matter how clever he is, it won't be enough.
