Mission in Progress 01

Mission in Progress 01

"Why is he in there?" Chen Guanghai, standing in the dark, spotted Wen Yan in the crowd with his sharp eyes.

"The base commander said that they airdropped today to protect the experimenters on this mission." The assistant next to Chen Guanghai replied.

"Notify our people and wait for the right opportunity to act. We can't let Wen Yan find out that something is wrong."

"yes."

Even though Chen Guanghai was unhappy, the task force still set off as scheduled.

Jiang Lin leaned back in his chair, half-closed eyes, sluggishly carrying the machine gun he had just been issued. The car the base had sent them was very sturdy, and they hardly had to deal with any zombies along the way.

"Bang" another shot, Wen Yan almost hit the target every time, without wasting a single bullet.

Jiang Lin half-closed his eyes and glanced at him secretly. He didn't expect that this person was so sharp and was caught directly.

Wen Yan noticed Jiang Lin looking at him, and his first reaction was to force a slightly friendly smile. However, it was very stiff, and it looked a little strange on his serious face.

Jiang Lin looked away silently, afraid that she would lose control of her expression.

"Captain, there is no road ahead, we may have to walk." Chen Siwei turned from the front row and said to Wen Yan.

Although Wen Yan was parachuted into this mission, everyone unanimously elected him as the temporary team leader.

He picked up the telescope and took a look at the general situation in the distance. It should be the downtown area before the zombie outbreak, with dilapidated cars and residual bloodstains on the road.

The road conditions were very bad and it was indeed impossible to move forward by car.

So everyone put on their combat uniforms, put on their helmets, and got out of the car.

Jiang Lin sighed softly. She really wanted to continue riding in the car.

The team was arranged linearly, with Wen Yan leading the way and Sheng Wei and Jiang Lin at the back.

Now that they were wearing helmets, they couldn't communicate individually, so Sheng Wei had to suppress her desire to speak.

There weren't many zombies on the road, and they could basically be taken care of with just a few shots. Three years into the apocalypse, humans had become quite capable of fighting zombies.

The team members were obviously a little relaxed. At this time, Jiang Lin became alert.

"I suspect there's a large zombie gathering nearby." Her voice rang out over the team's communicator.

"Everyone stay alert and pay attention to your surroundings." After being reminded by Jiang Lin, Wen Yan also realized that something was wrong and became more cautious.

But sometimes, accidents happen in an instant.

A large group of zombies suddenly broke out from the door on the left. The sound of shattering glass and the sound of hordes of footsteps made everyone's faces pale.

Jiang Lin took a look at the source of the zombies, which was a former large supermarket.

It seems that all the people who took refuge here earlier have turned into zombies. She raised her machine gun and fired in the direction of the zombie group.

The recoil of this gun was less than the one Sheng Wei had used last time, or perhaps it was because the combat uniform was more cushioned, Jiang Lin felt like a fish in water. He shot while dodging the zombies.

“Ah! Ahhhhh.”

Jiang Lin looked towards the source of the sound. It must have been a member of the team that had been in front of her. They had probably run out of bullets and were changing magazines when they were caught off guard and pounced on by a zombie.

Without much hesitation, Jiang Lin dropped the machine gun in his hand and ran towards the team member who was pinned under the zombies.

The "swish" sound of the sharp weapon penetrating into the flesh made people's scalp numb. Jiang Lin pulled out his dagger with satisfaction. The zombie had already fallen limply on the man below.

"Thank you, thank you." Chen Siwei pushed away the zombies on his body and was a little stunned after seeing the person in front of him.

It turned out to be her.

Jiang Lin was easy to recognize. Although he had grown taller and stronger after arriving at the base, he was still a little thin.

After making sure there was no danger, Jiang Lin continued to fight. Too lazy to go back to pick up her gun, she directly activated her special ability.

The sky was filled with ice spikes, which pierced into the heads of the zombies swarming over, and they fell to the ground in an instant.

Chen Siwei was behind Jiang Lin, watching all this with a complicated expression.

His mission was to kill Jiang Lin and Sheng Wei, but just now, Jiang Lin saved his life without any hesitation.

When Wen Yan saw Jiang Lin's special ability, his eyebrows raised. It seemed that her special ability had improved again.

Perhaps because she was too brutal, the zombies gradually lost their will to attack and hid back in the protection of the supermarket.

Their main task was to exchange plants with super reproductive capabilities at the Leap Biological Experiment Base, so they stopped besieging the zombies and continued moving towards their destination.

It was almost noon, and Wen Yan asked everyone to stop and rest.

They found a corner seat on the first floor of an abandoned building. Jiang Lin took off his helmet, quickly drank his lunch supplement, and put the helmet back on.

Everyone has a slight concern about this kind of nutrient solution, but it is the best choice when going out on a mission. After all, no one wants to eat sand in this environment.

Jiang Lin, wearing a helmet, leaned against the wall next to her and dozed off briefly. Sheng Wei sat next to her, his eyes under the helmet staring at everyone warily.

Although zombies are difficult to deal with, they are an obvious threat. The invisible enemies in the team are the ones they should guard against on this trip.

After resting for half an hour, Wen Yan decided to set off again. They had to find a safer place to stay before dark, as the danger would increase greatly at night.

Jiang Lin stood up and brushed off the dust on her body. Life in the laboratory was too good, and she was a little uncomfortable with living in the open air like this.

The Leap Biological Experiment Base and the First Base span the entire City A, one in the south and one in the north. Now that the car has been left behind, I don’t know how long it will take to get there.

After passing the zombie base in the supermarket, the number of zombies on the road obviously returned to normal.

Zombies haven't evolved much in the past three years, but humans, who stick together for warmth, are constantly making progress. Jiang Lin feels that the day when zombies become extinct isn't far away.

The new magazine was empty again. Jiang Lin used his supernatural power to stab the zombie again. As the sky gradually darkened, Wen Yan observed the surrounding environment.

I decided to stay in a small house nearby for one night.

He cautiously kicked open the door of the house. It was quiet inside, but the bloodstains and messy footprints showed that something had happened here.

The team members dispersed and each checked different rooms to see if there was any danger.

Jiang Lin kicked open the door of a room on the second floor with a gun in hand. It should be the former master bedroom, as it was covered with a thick layer of dust.

Even with a helmet on, she felt her nose itchy when she saw the dust all over the sky.

There was nothing in the master bedroom. Jiang Lin checked carefully and found an unopened letter on the dressing table.

Apparently, the person at the dressing table met with misfortune before the letter was even opened.

Because there were obvious blood stains on it, and the dried blood on the letter was stuck to the table, she had to be very careful to prevent the paper from tearing while dragging it.

Probably because it had been stored for too long, the paper had become very brittle. Jiang Lin opened it curiously.

Dear Xiaoyan:

Zhan Xinjia, the lab's been doing some plant research lately, and all the researchers are really enthusiastic. They say they've discovered a plant that could solve the food crisis, but I'm still feeling a bit uneasy.

I've been seeing you a lot lately, maybe I've missed you too much. We can meet again when the experiment is over.

The name on the letter had been obscured, so Jiang Lin couldn't read it clearly. She found it odd. Could the person writing the letter be researching the same super-reproductive plants they were trying to exchange?

The house was empty, so where did the bodies from the fight go?

Maybe it was because of the shadow left on her by the underground laboratory in the first base, but Jiang Lin always felt that the plants they were going to take were not good things.

Maybe it was influenced by this letter.

Jiang Lin calmed down and walked downstairs.

"There are no abnormalities in the rooms on the first floor."

"Nothing unusual on the second floor."

Although the sofa on the first floor was a bit dirty, it was still suitable for sitting. Jiang Lin took out a blanket from his backpack, wrapped himself in it, and leaned against the back of the sofa to rest.

Sheng Wei sat next to her. After a whole day of traveling, everyone was a little tired, so they each found a place to rest.

Jiang Lin didn't know when she fell asleep, but it was a very restless sleep. She dreamed that a man-eating plant swallowed her in one bite.

She woke up with a start and found herself sweating profusely. Sheng Wei next to her had already fallen asleep.

"Why are you having a nightmare?" Wen Yan didn't know when he realized that she was awake.

"Well, I dreamed that I was eaten by plants. Do you know much about that experimental base?" Everyone around was sleeping, and Jiang Lin and Wen Yan were talking in a low voice.

"I'm not very clear, but this experimental base has always been in contact with us."

"The wording of their messages is always a bit strange. They might just be a bunch of nerds. Don't think too much about it. If plants really eat people, then who sent us the message?"

Wen Yan's words calmed Jiang Lin down a little. She covered her chest with her hands, her heart still pounding.

She always felt a little unwell after reading the letter.

How can I describe this feeling? Just like what the letter said, I feel uneasy.

Maybe he was too tired today? Jiang Lin's face looked a little bad. He looked very pale and there was some sweat on his forehead.

"Would you like to come over here?" Wen Yan had built a fire without knowing when.

Being closer to the warmth made her feel a little better.

"What's wrong? Are you too tired?" Wen Yan also noticed that something was wrong with her.

Jiang Lin rubbed her solar plexus. She knew herself very well and knew that the intensity of today's exercise was not enough to make her feel very tired.

Perhaps the recent vigilance in all aspects has made her exhausted.

The two of them fell into silence again, each quietly warming themselves by the fire. People in a warm environment are always prone to drowsiness. Jiang Lin was no exception. She sat by the fire, leaning against the sofa, and fell into a light sleep again.

This time she saw the plants again, and she realized that she was in a dream. She kept running as if the plants behind her would eat her.

Slowly, she gained control of her body in her dream. Jiang Lin forced herself to look back to find out what was behind her.

She turned her head and finally saw what was behind her. It was an extremely huge underwater tree.

All its branches are covered with dense layers of wood ear-like things.

"Come, child, throw yourself into my arms, hunger will stay away from you, pain will stay away from you, and you will have eternal life..." It seemed as if someone was whispering in her ears.

No, no. Jiang Lin wanted to escape from this strange tree, but her legs seemed to be out of her control, and she couldn't move them at all.

Every step felt like walking on clouds, light and weak. Where was she?

"Jiang Lin, Jiang Lin? Wake up!"

"Jiang Lin, wake up, wake up."
