Chapter 26

Chapter 26

"Oh no, oh no..." As if a bucket of cold water had been poured over his head, Cui Pei swallowed hard, his lips trembling as he hesitated, unsure of what to do: "They didn't follow, what if..."

"Try to send a message to Jijing to confirm whether they are still alive."

Cui Pei immediately had an idea and turned to leave, but suddenly heard Pei Lingjun call out in a short voice, "Come back."

"?"

"Tell the brothers of the Xiaolong Guard to keep an eye on Zhu Zijin. The trusted men of the Pei and Zhu families wouldn't dare to do anything to this young master. Tell him to stay in Jijing and not cause any trouble."

Cui Pei touched his nose and chuckled in response.

The young master of the Zhu family has both a father and mother, and for some reason, he has always loved following his eldest son around since he was a child. If it weren't for the inappropriate occasion, he would love to spend all his time with the Xiaolong Guard.

Whenever the eldest brother goes out on missions, this young man almost always has to come along.

This time they secretly arrived in Anyang. When word of this reached Zhu Xiaolangjun's ears, he insisted on coming along. Fortunately, he still had his brothers from the Xiaolong Guard watching over him in Jijing.

After Cui Pei left, Pei Lingjun glanced down at his half-damp clothes, clicked his tongue softly, and strode into the house.

As dawn broke, birds chirped in the branches, and the air outside the window was filled with the fragrance of flowers.

The old woman swayed her plump body through the corridor and looked out the window of the ancestral hall. She saw someone kneeling on a prayer mat inside, their back slightly hunched.

A cold snort escaped her nose, and the old nanny swished open the door twice, calling out, "Get up! Fourth Miss, you've been kneeling all night, have you figured out where you went wrong?"

Inside the ancestral hall, the young girl rubbed her sleepy eyes and stood up, ignoring the old woman's words.

"The old lady is only doing this for the sake of peace and tranquility in the household, so please bear with her."

Wen Shu rubbed her knees and subconsciously glanced at the window on her left. The person who had been guarding the place last night was long gone.

As she lifted her foot to leave, she glanced down out of the corner of her eye and saw a round, porcelain-white medicine jar sitting quietly on the ground.

The old nanny behind her was still urging her on, so Wen Shu pretended to move the prayer mat and then slipped a small medicine pot, about half the size of her palm, into her sleeve.

"Did you hear that, Fourth Sister?"

Wen Shu was completely unaware, but after a little thought, she knew what the old woman was trying to say, and immediately nodded obediently, "Yes, Wen Shu has remembered what the old woman said."

After leaving the ancestral hall, Wen Shu had a moment to notice the writing on the medicine pot. Unlike the writing on ordinary medicines sold in pharmacies, it was covered with a bunch of miscellaneous and unrelated words.

The words on it are simple and clear: pain relief and swelling reduction.

Hanxiang saw her from afar and rushed forward to help her. Before she could speak, tears welled up in her eyes. "Miss, let me carry you."

The short time she knelt in the morning had made her legs numb, and she limped up the steps before exhaling and saying, "It's nothing. I slept in the ancestral hall last night, so I didn't kneel for long."

Hanxiang was taken aback, then said with a wry smile, "The old nanny in the old lady's courtyard just sat idly by?"

Wen Shu chuckled, her expression brightening as if she had just thought of something. "How could that be? But there are a lot of mosquitoes around the ancestral hall at night. Even if Granny carries ten or eight mosquito repellent sachets, she can't stand guard outside all night. She's not around at night at all."

Hanxiang conjured up an image in her mind of the old nanny with her face covered in mosquito bites, looking furious, and couldn't help but chuckle, "You're really something, young lady."

Wen Shu made no mention of the fact that Pei Lingjun had stayed by her side all night the previous night.

The cold medicine jar in her hand was quite noticeable, and Hanxiang noticed it and casually asked about it.

"Yesterday, what Young Master Qi gave me seemed to be some kind of jade hibiscus..."

Wen Shu gave a mumbled "hmm" and handed the medicine jar to Han Xiang, saying, "Put away these things from before."

The smooth, white medicine jar was still sealed, brand new, without a speck of dust. Hanxiang muttered to herself, "When was this made? How come I didn't know?"
