"In the end, humans cannot reverse nature."
Karasuma Renya said that his appearance had changed significantly.
His voice gradually deepened, carrying the roughness of years.
Silver strands appeared in her black hair, and wrinkles appeared on her smooth face.
He didn't care about anything.
Because those were things he had already experienced.
"Whether it's like Chris now, who remains forever young and vibrant, yet is forced to endure eternal torture..."
"Or like me over the past 10 years, I'm reliving humanity's evolution from ignorance to wisdom..."
"That's not what I want..."
Shiho Miyano, who was watching him quietly from the side, hesitated to speak.
Karasuma Renya, who was about 50 years old at the time, keenly grasped this point.
“Yes, Shirley,” he nodded, “I know about the generation of drugs you developed.”
"In your view, it was a complete failure, but I also know that there is a very small chance that it will achieve better results than the second-generation drug."
Shiho Miyano's eyes flickered involuntarily.
Karasuma Renya smiled kindly, like an old man, or rather, like a grandfather.
"You don't know, do you? I've seen your experimental records. In fact, Gin reported them to me after he had seen them."
"So I was the one who made him use this drug."
"If you hate him for this..."
The old man smiled and winked, then said nothing more.
His expression seemed to say, "You young people should handle your own affairs."
“My thought at the time was,” Karasuma Renya paused, a hint of embarrassment in his voice, “that since it wasn’t a successful drug, I might as well let everyone be my guinea pigs!”
"From a scientist's perspective, it's a rather ridiculous idea, right? Because this kind of experiment is meaningless."
"No one who succeeds with a one in hundreds of thousands of chance will dare to flaunt their success under your nose."
"Anyone who would let Gin use this drug to kill someone wouldn't be that stupid."
"However, even if we can collect the data, or even create a more successful drug... in other words, the body rejuvenates while the brain maintains its original functions, which is not necessarily a good thing."
"Would an organization accept a little kid as its leader? Or a little kid like you who could be easily kicked over by a girl?"
"And what about myself? Can I accept a self that issues commands from a meter above my line of sight?"
"An extremely vulnerable human being who can trip over a slightly higher step, or have a medium-sized dog easily bite his neck?"
"These weren't my wildest dreams back then!"
As he spoke, Karasuma Renya slowly shook his head.
He's finding it difficult to even shake his head now.
If you look closely, you can see that his eyebrows and the corners of his eyes are drooping, and the skin on his neck is layered with patches of skin of varying shades and aging spots.
He spoke very slowly, as if playing the previous footage at half speed.
But it remains clear and smooth.
"I know what I want."
"Is it immense wealth, or the power to turn the world upside down with a flick of the wrist? You could say that."
"But what I want even more is to be able to control all of this and not let these 'me' slip through my fingers."
"I want a body in its prime."
"I also want a mind that has been honed through a lifetime of trials."
"I also want time to stand still, to preserve these things forever, and not let them change."
"But how can 'change' be stopped?"
"Isn't that as absurd as trying to stop the flow of water...?"
His voice trailed off, as if he were about to give up.
But he still had a slight smile on his face.
“My lord…” Gin was stunned for a long time before bending down to examine him.
But Karasuma Renya, who was sitting against the wall, slightly raised his hand.
That was probably a move he made with all his might.
“Let’s go, Gin,” he said, “take Sherry with you…”
"Run as far as you can."
"You still have several decades of good life ahead of you."
"As for the end, we will all meet at the same destination..."
His dull eyes flickered, seemingly turning to the vermouth.
Absinthe shrugged and moved closer to him.
"Grandpa, I'll stay..." She didn't finish her sentence, as if she couldn't bring herself to say "stay with you."
But Karasuma Renya chuckled softly, a laugh that sounded like the hoarse cawing of a crow.
"Okay...sing me a song, Chris..."
"Let's sing As Time Goes By, the theme song from Casablanca, a song from your era..."
Vermouth rolled her eyes at his words but didn't correct him; it was a song from around the same time she was born.
As the female celebrity sang a lullaby in a relaxed manner, Gin dragged Shiho Miyano towards the door.
You must remember this.
"A kiss is just a kiss"
"A sigh is just a sigh."
“The fundamental things apply”
As time goes by...
...
"Watch out, two people are moving towards the main gate!"
Amuro Tooru nodded as he listened to the message from the sniper over the walkie-talkie, his eyes fixed on the spot, his whole body tense.
