After turning several corners and climbing over several walls, Wu Er finally shook off the doctor and apprentice at the clinic.
Leaning against the wall, he took a few deep breaths to catch his breath and regain some strength.
In this kind of weather, you're afraid to move. If you do, you'll be covered in sweat, looking like you've just been pulled out of the water.
"They must have shaken them off."
After regaining his strength, Wu Er straightened up, glanced back to make sure no one was chasing him, and then breathed a sigh of relief.
The doctor at this clinic is stingy; he causes trouble every few days just because he's short a few doses of medicine.
However, Wu Er is quite clever and always manages to escape. If he were caught, he would probably get a beating.
Then, Wu Er reached into his pocket and rummaged around, taking out some copper coins, which he then counted carefully.
He counted it once, then counted it again, and after this second count, his brows furrowed.
The reason is simple: the money from selling the medicine is too little.
"I didn't earn enough today."
Wu Er sighed softly, then looked up and saw that the branches of another tree in the neighboring courtyard were sticking out, with two or three yellow leaves hanging on them.
While those two or three yellow leaves may look nice, they also add to one's gloom.
Wu Er gritted his teeth and pointed at the tree, saying, "Why are you turning yellow again? Couldn't you have turned yellow a few days later? I haven't even earned enough money yet! Can't I earn enough to buy some clothes for my junior brothers and sisters?"
I complained a few times, but it was no use.
It's going to get cold eventually, so let's think about how to make money and how to get through the winter.
Wu Er tilted his head and began to think.
Thinking that it was already autumn, the herbs would only become scarcer day by day, and with the constant harassment from others, he was afraid he wouldn't be able to earn much.
It's not good to do odd jobs for some people, not to mention that there are few odd jobs available at this time.
Even if someone is lucky enough to hire Wu Er, given his thin and weak appearance, they might secretly cut corners on him.
It's the same principle as child labor in a previous life.
Doing the most work for the least pay, and sometimes even having to pay the employer in return.
Thinking of this, Wu Er couldn't help but worry, saying, "What will we do if it gets colder? Are we going to have to go into the mountains to hunt and make clothes out of wild animal pelts?"
Needless to say, with Wu Er's still-developing body, it would take him a long time to catch a pheasant, let alone hunt wild animals.
"Clothes, fur..."
Wu Er repeated it again, then a flash of inspiration struck him, and he remembered something.
While I was selling herbs earlier, a kind-looking man next to me mentioned a small courtyard in the west of the city with furs at the back door...
The western part of the city is rather deserted, lacking both markets and inns, making it less lively compared to other places.
Even the wild grass here is more withered and yellow than in other places.
"A small courtyard in the western corner of the city."
Wu Er muttered the place the man had mentioned, his eyes scanning the surroundings. Soon, he spotted a small courtyard.
Wu Er naturally walked over as well.
Although the man's description was vague, it wasn't too difficult to find.
There aren't many wealthy and noble people in this small town, and there aren't many independent courtyards either. Plus, it's located in the relatively poor western part of the town, so it's even easier to find one.
In the western corner of the city, there is a small courtyard.
The courtyard couldn't really be called a small courtyard; it was quite large for this small town, and the walls were a bit higher than those of the average wealthy family's courtyard.
Not only were the gates of the courtyard tightly closed, but the summer heat hadn't subsided, so the windows were also tightly shut. Weren't they afraid of getting sick from the stuffiness?
That's really strange.
Strange as it may be, Wu Er wasn't here to explore the courtyard; he was here to collect furs.
Slowly, we walked around the main gate of the courtyard and arrived at the back gate.
Wu Er looked towards the back door and saw a rather large piece of gray fur on the ground.
This delighted Wu Er, who quickly stepped forward, bent down, picked up the fur, and rubbed it in his hands.
"Um?"
Upon closer inspection, Wu Er noticed something was amiss; why did the fur have a fishy smell?
Then, he spread out the gray fur in his hand, and saw that it was stained with specks of blood, but it was still warm to the touch...
These are quite a lot of processed furs!
It's freshly peeled raw hide!
Someone is skinning animals in that yard!
Wu Er couldn't help but think of the bloody scene of skinning animals, and felt a chill run down his spine. He took several deep breaths before he could calm down.
Although he was a little scared, Wu Er did not leave, hoping to stay a little longer and see if he could get some more fur.
This piece of clothing in my hand is not enough to make winter clothes for my five junior brothers and sisters.
Without winter clothes, things will be difficult when winter comes...
Thinking of this, Wu Er rubbed his hands together, hugged the fur he had just picked up, and then moved closer to the back door of the courtyard.
Driven by curiosity, Wu Er wanted to know what was happening in the courtyard, so he gently pressed his ear against the back door.
He narrowed his eyes and listened intently.
"Huh? Why is there no sound?"
Wu Er was puzzled for a moment, and listened for a while longer, but still couldn't hear any sound from inside.
That's strange, why is there no sound at all when peeling the skin?
Is it because my ears are bad and I didn't hear it?
Thinking about it, Wu Er moved his head, trying to press his ear even closer, and this movement naturally required more effort than before.
With a creak, the back door of the courtyard was opened a little...
The door wasn't locked?!
Wu Er was startled and took a few steps back.
Although I don't know who lives in this place, they might be the ones skinning animals alive, so they probably aren't very kind.
