Chapter 19: Change of Years

After returning from the provincial capital, Jian Yunxi and Jian Yunxiao had a good sleep. They didn't feel tired while playing, but they were exhausted when they came back.

After her father came back, he was busy frying New Year's goods, meatballs, radish balls, crispy pork, golden fruit sticks... Jian Yunxi felt that her father was a natural chef who could cook everything.

Her mother can cook, but she is just a bit better at it. As long as her father has time, he will always prepare some delicious food for them that he learned from TV.

Jian Yun was lighting a fire in front of the stove. He didn't know what the rule was, but he couldn't talk while frying things. Jian Yun was very well behaved now, but when he was a child, he always made a fuss.

Sometimes he would shout, "Dad, the oil is about to come out." Sometimes he would shout, "Hurry, hurry, Dad, the meatballs are about to get burnt." Every time he said a word, his butt would be kicked. Later, he was finally able to control his mouth.

In fact, Jian Yunxi didn’t understand why they couldn’t talk while frying. Everyone said so anyway, and she thought if she insisted on asking the reason, she would probably be kicked out.

Whenever they fried New Year's goods, Jian Yunxi and her sister were like two little hamsters. They each held a bowl in their hands, eating a bowl of meatballs and a bowl of crispy meat. Soon, their stomachs were so full that they couldn't even eat dinner.

After frying these, her father went on to fry pork elbows and pig trotters. According to her father, these meat dishes taste better after frying and then stewing.

On New Year's Eve, Jian Yunxi's parents got up in the morning and started to put up Spring Festival couplets. Of course, these couplets were written by Jian Yunxi and his two siblings. Their family no longer needed to buy Spring Festival couplets since elementary school.

Although they are not as good as any celebrities, the whole family is very satisfied.

Jian Yunxi's grandparents and uncle's family also came to celebrate the Spring Festival together. In their family, the men cooked. Dad and uncle were busy in the kitchen, while mom and aunt were eating melon seeds at the door.

The New Year’s Eve dinner here is eaten at 12 noon. After setting off firecrackers, the family sits together, first sending New Year’s greetings to the grandparents, then the younger generations say a few auspicious words, and the dinner table is filled with laughter.

In fact, the custom that Jian Yunxi least understands is that no matter how cold the weather is, there will always be a few cold dishes on the New Year’s Eve dinner, which will make you feel completely chilled after eating them.

There were also several large bowls, one for "Year after Year of Abundance", one for "Family Reunion", one for "Earth-Clay Pot Chicken", and one for "Braised Pork Knuckle". Everyone was eating with their mouths full of oil, and they were very happy.

After finishing the reunion dinner, it was still early. Jian Yunxi took his brothers and sisters to walk around the street. Most people had gone back to celebrate the New Year, and only a few ring-tossing stalls were left.

"Let's each have a try." Jian Yunxi called on his younger brothers and sisters to come and play. In the end, Jian Yunxi caught nothing, Jian Yunxiao caught a whistle, Jian Yunfang caught a bamboo dragonfly, and even his cousin caught a tumbler.

"Ah, my luck is so bad." Jian Yunxi has had bad luck since he was a child.

When she was a child, the class could draw lots after donating money. Other students drew either washbasins or kettles, but she was the only one who got a soap box. It was given to her by the teacher because she felt sorry for her. When she got home and saw that her sister drew a towel and her brother drew a pair of gloves, she burst into tears.

It was getting dark, and Jian Yunxi hurried back home with his younger brother and sister. After eating the New Year's Eve dinner, his grandparents went back to the county town.

Uncle and aunt also took their cousin back to their own home. Jian Yunxi and his brothers and sisters washed up and sat on the sofa waiting to watch the Spring Festival Gala.

Comrade Jian Feng is mixing the dumpling stuffing, while Ms. Li Meiling is kneading the dough. Every year on New Year's Eve, their family makes dumplings while watching the Spring Festival Gala.

Jian Yunxi is the only one among the children in their family who knows how to roll dumpling skins. He holds the dumpling skin in one hand and the rolling pin in the other, and with his two hands coordinating with each other, a round dumpling skin of the right size is rolled out in a short while.

Moreover, she rolled out the dumpling wrappers so quickly that her mother and sister had enough time to make the dumplings.

"Big sister, second sister, look, your handsome guy is coming!" Jian Yunxi looked up and saw that it was Ah Niu singing "Peach Blossoms Blooming". Jian Yunxi remembered that this song was very popular all over the country.

She unconsciously started humming along, and her sister joined in, and soon it became a small chorus.

Because all five members of the family participated in making dumplings, they made them quickly and well. They finished making a pot of celery and meat filling and a pot of leek and egg filling.

This year's Spring Festival Gala was quite interesting. Jian Yunxi laughed happily while eating melon seeds and watching Cai Ming's skit.

Jian Yunxi's family would stay up on New Year's Eve every year. When it was almost 12 o'clock, her father would go to cook dumplings. When the clock struck midnight for the Spring Festival Gala, Jian Feng would go to set off firecrackers, then serve the dumplings and call a few children to eat.

Jian Yunxi and her brother and sister finished their "Gengsui Jiaozi" while dozing off. Then they brushed their teeth and lay down in the bed. They fell asleep soon after. They still had a tough battle to fight on the first day of the new year.

Early in the morning on New Year's Day, Jian Yunxi was woken up by her mother, who urged them to change into new clothes and go out to greet relatives and friends.

Every time he visited a house, everyone gave each other the best New Year's wishes. Jian Yunxi loved the atmosphere of the New Year at this time.

On the second day of the Chinese New Year, Jian Yunxi and his younger brother and sister got up early again. They were going to see the temple fair.

As soon as they arrived at the temple fair, Jian Yunxi and the others were stunned by the scene before them.

The temple fair was packed with people, gongs and drums were beating, and there were lanterns and decorations everywhere, which was filled with the joy of the Spring Festival. The streets were lined with all kinds of stalls, selling snacks, toys, handicrafts, acrobatics and lion dances, and it was very lively.

A large stage was set up in the center of the temple fair, with lion dances and acrobatics being performed on it. Jian Yunxi and his brothers and sisters squeezed to the front row and watched intently.

The lion dancers are agile and the lion heads are lifelike, sometimes jumping and sometimes rolling, drawing cheers from the audience.

The acrobatic performance was even more thrilling. The actors tumbled high in the air. Jian Yunxi was stunned and applauded continuously.

After watching the performance, Jian Yunxi and his younger brother and sister were attracted by the aroma and ran to the snack stand.

Jian Yunxi’s favorite thing to eat is the crispy stinky tofu at the temple fair. It is not sold in the town at other times and can only be eaten at the temple fair.

Jian Yunxi took a bite carefully. The outside was crispy, the inside was soft, and the rich aroma melted in her mouth. She couldn't help but exclaimed: "Wow, this is the taste, so delicious!"

Her brother and sister covered their noses and stood far away.

"What? You don't know what's good. Stinky tofu is so delicious. Humph!"

Jian Yunxi ignored them and kept eating bite by bite, finishing the whole small box in a short while.

Jian Yunxiao handed her another cup of milk tea and said, "Sister, try this, it's so delicious."

Jian Yunxi knew that this was a simplified version of milk tea made with milk tea powder. It tasted really good.

She and Jian Yunxiao continued to stroll around some stalls with their milk tea in their hands. Jian Yunfang had already run to the other side to play with balloons.

"Jian Yunxi."

Jian Yunxi heard someone calling her, but she was wearing a furry hat on her head and a thick scarf around her neck, so she didn't turn her head for a while. When she finally found the source of the voice, she discovered it was Lu Yang. Why was he here at the temple fair?
