Chapter 5: The Scumbag
Gu Siqing walked towards her own fields. This eldest cousin was diligent and capable, but he was too honest. She didn't know how her shrewd uncle and aunt raised such a son.
When we arrived at our own field, my mother and my two older sisters were picking corn in the cornfield, and my father was carrying out sacks of corn. All four of us were sweating.
Gu Siqing hurried over and helped her father put the sack on the ground. Seeing his daughter coming, Gu Jianguo smiled and said, "Is school over?"
"Well, I told you to go home and eat." Gu Siqing went to help break the corn again, but before she started, her elder sister said, "Don't do it. You don't have gloves on, and the corn leaves will scratch you."
"Okay, let's continue after dinner." Wang Yueju came out of the cornfield, and the family loaded the corn onto a cart and took it home.
Gu Jianguo was pulling in front, while Gu Siqing and her sisters were pushing in the back. When they passed by their second uncle's field, their second aunt Zhang Chuntao, chewing a sweet potato, saw them and said, "Sister-in-law, look how capable your daughters are. They can catch up with a son."
This is clearly mocking the fact that they don't have a son.
But Wang Yueju had heard this kind of talk so many times that she didn't get too angry. If she had, she would have died of anger long ago.
"My children don't have any other advantages except diligence. They're all eager to work in the fields." Wang Yueju looked at her and said, "Where's your second brother? Is he playing mahjong again?"
Zhang Chuntao had been looking forward to seeing Wang Yueju's joke, but her face darkened instantly when she heard this, and she felt a pang of pain in her heart. Gu Jiancheng loved playing mahjong, and once he sat down at the table, he would forget everything else. No matter how big the matter was, it was not as important as playing mahjong.
Gu Siqing gave her mother a thumbs-up. Her ability to argue with others was truly top-notch. However, Second Aunt was narrow-minded, and she might end up arguing with Second Uncle when she got home.
But what does that have to do with them? It was Second Aunt who started the bad mouthing.
Back home, Gu Jianguo and his friends unloaded the corn while Gu Siqing went to the kitchen to put the noodles in the pot. By the time the noodles came out, they had already washed them briefly. The family ate around the stone table in the yard.
We were halfway through our meal when my eldest sister's fiancé, Deng Zhiming, arrived. He wore a dark blue jacket over a white shirt, his hair neatly combed. He looked very refined and respectable.
This is probably what a gentlemanly scumbag is supposed to mean.
Gu Siqing saw him tighten his grip on the chopsticks. It was this scumbag who ruined her elder sister's life in her previous life. He should not expect to have his wish come true in this life.
"Zhiming is here. Have you eaten?" Wang Yueju asked Deng Zhiming with a smile.
"I've already eaten at the company cafeteria," Deng Zhiming said after parking his bicycle. "It's harvest time now, so I'm looking for some work I can help with."
Gu Yimin stood up and brought him a stool. Deng Zhiming took it and sat down with a smile, looking at her with a sticky look. Gu Yimin frowned. She didn't like the look in Deng Zhiming's eyes. It made her feel that Deng Zhiming was not a serious person.
"Just work hard, we can finish the work in the fields in a few days." Gu Jianguo put the bowl down. Seeing that it was empty, Gu Siqing picked it up and filled him another bowl.
"Tomorrow is Sunday, I'll come over to help." Deng Zhiming said this, his eyes never leaving Gu Yimin. Seeing this, Gu Siqing wanted to poke his eyes out.
Deng Zhiming still had to go to work, and after a short chat, he was about to leave. Wang Yueju was just about to ask Gu Yimin to see him off when Gu Siqing suddenly clutched her stomach and said, "Sister, my stomach is killing me."
Seeing this, Gu Yimin didn't bother to see Deng Zhiming off, and helped her back to the house. Wang Yueju, Gu Erhui, and Gu Sanjing also followed in.
"Why do you suddenly have a stomachache?" Gu Yimin helped her lie on the bed, rubbing her stomach gently. Gu Erhui poured a bowl of boiling water over, "Drink some hot water."
Gu Siqing sat up, took the bowl and drank half a bowl of hot water, then said: "Much better, it doesn't hurt much anymore."
Gu Erhui looked at her suspiciously, "This hot water really works."
Gu Siqing grinned. Wang Yueju came over and touched her forehead. It didn't feel hot, so she asked, "Can you still go to school?"
Gu Siqing didn't want to go to school, but she was too sick to go to school. Her parents and sisters must be worried, so she had to go to school anyway.
Wang Yueju and the others left when they saw she was alright. Gu Siqing lay in bed, thinking about how to expose Deng Zhiming's true face. This was more important than making money.
I must not let my elder sister jump into the fire pit of the Deng family in this life.
Deng Zhiming's uncle worked at the county public security bureau and, being a man of great cunning, found Deng Zhiming, a high school graduate, a job at the grain depot. Initially a temporary position, he was later offered a permanent position. As a result, Deng Zhiming's family considered him a significant figure.
In this era, people who eat commercial grain are considered superior in the eyes of farmers.
My eldest sister was engaged to Deng Zhiming. It was said that Deng Zhiming fell in love with my eldest sister at first sight and sent someone to our house to act as a matchmaker. My parents carefully inquired about Deng Zhiming and his family. Aside from the health of Deng Zhiming's mother, Zhao Fenglan, there were no major problems, so the marriage was settled.
Many people said this was a good match. Deng Zhiming had a job and was able to earn a living, so his eldest sister would surely enjoy a good life with him. Even his family thought so.
But who knew that Deng Zhiming was a playboy? He had an affair with a young widow in town before he got married. After a period of silence after marriage, he started to flirt with the young widow again. My eldest sister was really in tears at that time.
They filed for divorce, but as soon as the matter was brought up, Deng Zhiming grabbed a knife and threatened to commit suicide, prompting the entire Deng family to engage in a violent altercation. My eldest sister and Deng Zhiming remained entangled for over a decade before finally filing for divorce.
Gu Siqing sat up, squinting her eyes as she thought about how to expose Deng Zhiming's true face. Few people knew about his affair with the young widow; after all, he worked for a state-owned enterprise and was very careful about this. However, if someone was determined, they would definitely be able to find evidence.
With the evidence of his affair with the young widow, he had to withdraw from the marriage.
After sitting on the bed for a while, Gu Siqing got up and went to school with Gu Sanjing. On the way, they ran into Gu Xuebin again. He was wiping his nose and jutting his chin at them. She really wanted to put a sack on him and beat him up again.
During the last class of the afternoon, the teacher announced that the autumn harvest holiday would begin the next day. The class erupted in cheers. Gu Siqing was also delighted; she finally didn't have to sit in the classroom and put on a show every day.
After the teacher left, Han Erpang rushed in front of her and said, "Xiao Si, let's go together!"
Gu Siqing stuffed the book into her bag, and the two of them walked out of the classroom together. Han Erpang was her childhood sweetheart. His father was a comrade in arms, and they retired together. Their villages were close, so the two families had a good relationship.
She and Han Erpang were the same age. They had played together before going to school and had been in the same class ever since. In their previous life, they had also been in the same class in junior high school. Later, she was admitted to a key high school, while Han Erpang failed, and the two separated.
After that we gradually became distant, and I still feel quite regretful when I think about it now.
