Chapter 6 Let’s Dig a Cellar
Gu Siqing and Han Zhengyang, also known as Han Erpang, went home together, carrying their schoolbags. Gu Sanjing didn't know where she had gone with her classmates.
"There's a ground bubble there." Han Zhengyang ran to the bushes by the roadside, squatted down and waved to Gu Siqing: "Xiao Si, come quickly, there's a ground bubble."
Dipaozi is a purple-black fruit that grows on wild grass. It is the size of a soybean and tastes slightly sweet. Children in rural areas don't have many snacks to eat, so dipaozi is considered a small snack.
Gu Siqing hadn't eaten it in years and had forgotten what it tasted like. She walked over and squatted down. Han Zhengyang handed her the picked ground puffs: "Here."
"I'll pick them myself." Gu Siqing reached out and picked some small purple-black fruits. Han Zhengyang had already started eating them beside her, and his hands and mouth were all black, as if he had been poisoned.
Gu Siqing looked at him and laughed, stuffing the noodles into her mouth while laughing. As a result, her hands and mouth were covered with black and purple traces of juice.
"Erpang, Xiaosi."
A hoarse voice was heard. Gu Siqing looked up while chewing the rice noodle and saw a young man like a cloud in the clear sky standing not far away holding a bicycle.
He had fair skin, sharp eyebrows and phoenix eyes, and the blue cloth jacket he wore was washed to a slightly white color, making him look even cleaner.
It’s Erpang’s elder brother, Han Zhengping.
"Brother Zhengping."
"Big brother."
Gu Siqing and Han Zhengyang walked over while eating snacks. Han Zhengping asked one of them to sit in the back seat of the bike and the other to sit in the front beam, and then they rode the bike home.
Gu Siqing was sitting in the front, and when she looked down, she saw Han Zhengping's hands holding the handlebars. They were white, with distinct joints, and looked very handsome.
Looking at her own little hand, which was black from being stained with the ground soaking water, Gu Siqing maliciously stretched out her dirtiest index finger and wiped it on the back of his hand. In an instant, a black mark appeared on the white skin.
Well, there is a kind of destructive beauty, not bad!
"Xiao Si, stop making trouble." Han Zhengping looked at the black mark on the back of his hand, feeling helpless.
Gu Siqing chuckled when she heard his voice. A boy of twelve or thirteen is in the period of voice change, and his voice sounds a bit like the quacking of a duck.
After laughing a few times, she thought of this almost perfect boy who died young, and couldn't help but sigh in her heart. She hoped that she could change his fate in this life.
When they arrived at Gu's house, Gu Jianguo and Wang Yueju were peeling corn cobs around a mountain of corn. Seeing Han Zhengping, Gu Jianguo looked up and said, "Zhengping is here."
Han Zhengping smiled and nodded, then parked his bicycle in front of Gu's house, walked into the yard and said, "Uncle, I'm going to wash my hands."
Gu Jianguo waved him off, and Han Zhengping walked into the kitchen, scooped some water into the basin, and squatted down to wash his hands. Gu Siqing curled her lips when she saw this. He was really picky.
She walked over and squatted beside Han Zhengping, whispering, "Brother Zhengping, have you had your autumn harvest holiday?" Han Zhengping was in junior high school in town.
"We don't have a harvest holiday." Han Zhengping washed his hands and glanced at her black little paws. Gu Siqing quickly put her hands in the water to scrub them. "Can you take me to town in a couple of days?"
"No." Han Zhengping refused directly, "I'm going to school. It's not safe for you to stay in town alone."
Gu Siqing pursed her lips. She wanted to go to town to follow Deng Zhiming, but she couldn't go alone. Her parents would definitely not agree. Besides, if she walked there, it would take at least an hour.
How can we get hold of Deng Zhiming if we don’t go to town?
At this time, Han Zhengping said, "Why are you going to town? If you want to buy something, I'll bring it to you."
"I'm not buying anything, I just want to go to town and have fun." Gu Siqing sighed in her heart. She only had three cents in savings, what could she buy?
Han Zhengping knew that this girl had been quirky since she was a child, so he didn't take it seriously. He told Gu Jianguo and left with Han Zhengyang.
Gu Siqing walked over to her elder sister and sat down, peeling corn with her, but in her mind she was thinking about how to get hold of something against Deng Zhiming.
As she was thinking, her eyes caught sight of a 28-inch bicycle parked in the corner of the yard. If that didn't work, she'd just ride over there herself. Although she was too short to sit on the seat, she could still ride by slouching her legs under the beam.
Although the posture was a bit embarrassing, it could be tolerated.
It's the busy farming season these days, and my parents and sister are all busy working in the fields. If she disappears for an hour or two a day, she probably won't be discovered.
"Dad, isn't it time to clean up our cellar?" Gu Siqing said to Gu Jianguo, looking up. The corn had been picked, and tomorrow's job would be to husk it. Deng Zhiming was coming to help tomorrow; husks were a great bargain for him.
Let’s dig a cellar!
"Well, it's time to renovate it." Gu Jianguo was thinking about when to dig the cellar again. The sweet potatoes grew well this year, so the cellar is a little small now.
"Let's do it tomorrow," Gu Siqing suggested. "We have the autumn harvest holiday. I'll help you dig tomorrow."
Gu Jianguo felt that his little girl was becoming more and more considerate, so he smiled and said, "Okay, let's dig the cellar tomorrow."
Wang Yueju glanced at her little girl and thought she seemed very active these days! She never worried about such things before.
Gu Siqing felt her mother's gaze and turned to give her a big smile. Wang Yueju saw this and said with a smile: "I think you want to go down to the cellar to play."
Gu Siqing chuckled, looking as if someone was guessing her thoughts.
Gu Sanjing came back just as dinner was about to begin. She was used to being a bit wild, so no one in the family said anything. But as everyone sat down to eat, Gu Jianguo looked at her and said, "Have you finished writing your self-examination?"
"Oh, it's done." Gu Sanjing trotted into the house, took out a small notebook, and stood straight across from Gu Jianguo. She was confident that it would pass the inspection, and maybe even get praised by her father for her good writing.
"Read it." Gu Jianguo said.
When soldiers in the army write self-criticisms, they read them out in front of everyone, and their family has continued this fine tradition.
Gu Sanjing coughed, held the notebook high, and read: "Dear Mom and Dad, sisters, hello. I'm sorry I made a serious mistake. I'm sorry to the country, to the Party, to the people, and to the parents who gave birth to me and raised me. Yesterday, I was greedy and stole grandma's apple. Actually, it wasn't that I was greedy, but I couldn't control my mouth. It drooled at the sight of the apple.
I know that the crime I committed is unforgivable and I should be torn into pieces by five horses, torn into pieces, and cut into pieces by a thousand knives."
"Puff" Gu Siqing couldn't hold back her laughter any longer. Feeling Gu Sanjing's stare, she waved her hands and said, "I'm sorry, I really can't help it. Cut into pieces by five horses, hahahahaha"
The others at the table were also having a hard time enduring. Gu Jianguo coughed and said, "Okay, that's it. Remember not to steal anything from now on, no matter who it is."
Gu Sanjing hummed dejectedly. She felt that her inspection was well written and should be praised.
