After lunch, Pei Yuezhi cut a slice of the watermelon she had brought, and everyone ate a few pieces to cool off.
Pei's father and Pei Yunzhi started packing. The buses to town only run in the morning, so they packed their things in advance and planned to transport some over the next morning.
However, the father and son didn't have many belongings, very few clothes, and mostly books, so it was relatively easy to organize.
Pei Yuezhi and Fan Mu also helped pack, and by evening everything was packed.
As it was almost time to prepare dinner, Pei Yuezhi went to the kitchen to start cooking, leaving the three of them to tidy up the last things.
However, they didn't have as much space to move their things as Pei Yuezhi, and it would take them two days to make the round trip. After all, there were many other villagers on the oxcart going to town, and their luggage would take up too much space.
Pei Yuezhi wanted to rent a donkey cart, just like when moving the shop, but Pei's father felt that it didn't need to spend so much money and that it could be done in two days.
But she didn't want to go through all that trouble, so she secretly went to ask the oxcart.
Packing was hot and tiring, so Pei Yuezhi made some cold noodles and a cold dish, but didn't cook anything else.
The group managed to finish their meal and tidy up everything. It had been a tiring day, and after eating watermelon, they decided to get some rest.
Using the original owner's memories, Pei Yuezhi found the family that drove the oxcart in the village.
This family, surnamed Liu, usually consists of kind and easy-going people who do this kind of work in the village that requires everyone's approval.
The eldest brother and sister-in-law of the Liu family are both very warm and easy-going people. Pei Yuezhi plans to go and ask if they can come back after they go to town tomorrow, as she wants to rent their oxcart.
When they arrived at the Liu family's house, Liu's sister-in-law was sitting in the courtyard. She was a little surprised to see Pei Yuezhi come in.
"Are you Uncle Pei's daughter? You look familiar yet unfamiliar."
Pei Yuezhi smiled and said to Sister Liu, "Sister Liu, I am Yuezhi from the Pei family. I haven't been back much since I got married. So many years have passed, it's normal that you don't recognize me."
Sister-in-law Liu suddenly realized: "I was wondering why you looked familiar. You and Yun Zhi look so alike. Did you come back to see Uncle Pei?"
“It’s not just about coming back to see him. My dad’s health isn’t good, and we wanted to make it easier for him to get medical treatment. So my brother and I rented a house in town. We came here to pick him up and take him to town.”
"Oh, what's going on? Young lady, what brings you to my house?" Sister-in-law Liu asked.
Pei Yuezhi nodded and said, "I do have something to trouble you with. I'm moving tomorrow, and I still have a lot of stuff. I was wondering if I could rent your oxcart to help me move."
"It's just a small matter. Why are you thinking it's a big deal? It's not troublesome at all. If we can make some money, we'd be happy to make more trips."
“I only come back and forth every day because there aren’t many people who need to go to town. It’s nothing, it’s no big deal. You wait here for a while, your Brother Liu has gone out and will be back soon.”
When Sister-in-law Liu heard this, she laughed even more happily than before.
Pei Yuezhi was relieved to see that he agreed so easily.
Sure enough, not long after, Brother Liu returned, carrying a hoe, probably to check on the fields.
"Wife, I'm back. Hey, who's this?" Brother Liu asked, putting down his hoe.
Sister-in-law Liu quickly introduced Pei Yuezhi and explained the purpose of her visit.
"I see. So how do you plan to rent it?" Brother Liu asked.
Pei Yuezhi explained, "You just need to take your customers to town as usual, and then come back to pick us up. After that, you can wait in town as usual and return at your usual time."
"That means I have to make an extra trip." Brother Liu understood. "No problem then, how do we calculate the price?"
"What price do you think is reasonable? I'm not really sure about the price myself."
Brother Liu thought for a moment and said, "My oxcart can seat eight people. If I make an extra round trip, you can give me fifteen coins. Is that alright?"
Upon hearing this, Pei Yuezhi immediately agreed: "Okay, no problem, see you tomorrow."
After saying goodbye to the Liu couple, Pei Yuezhi was overjoyed. She hadn't expected the pig cart to be so cheap. She had rented a donkey cart to move her shop, and even though they helped with the move, fifty coins wasn't cheap.
Our villagers are truly honest.
With everything packed and a car found, Pei Yuezhi happily went home.
When they arrived home, they found Pei's father sitting in the yard.
"Father, it's already dark. What are you doing in the yard? There are a lot of mosquitoes at night. Come inside quickly." Pei Yuezhi quickly helped him up and into the house.
Pei's father was helped to his feet: "We just finished eating, and you disappeared. I thought you and Yunzhi were cleaning up in the kitchen. But he came out and said he didn't see you. I didn't know where you went either, so I waited for you in the yard."
“I rented an oxcart from Brother Liu’s house, but I’m still worried that moving it back and forth would be too much of a hassle. It would be better to just move it all at once.” Pei Yuezhi helped her father back to his room.
Pei's father, who had just sat down, heard Pei Yuezhi's words and began to feel sorry for the money again: "You child, your brother is strong, let him carry it, why spend so much money?"
"Don't worry about it, it's already rented. Don't worry, it's not expensive. Brother Liu is an honest man, and his fees are very reasonable," Pei Yuezhi said reassuringly.
"You should get some rest. You don't need to get up too early tomorrow. Brother Liu has to go to town and will pick us up when he gets back."
Only then did Pei's father feel relieved, and waved his hand to signal Pei Yuezhi to go back first.
When Pei Yuezhi entered the courtyard, she saw Pei Yunzhi putting away the stool that her father had been sitting on. When she saw her sister coming over, she immediately asked her, "Sister, where did you go? Father and I have been looking for you for ages."
“I went to Brother Liu to rent an oxcart. I just told Dad. Why aren’t you resting? What are you doing here?” Pei Yuezhi explained to him.
"I'm going to rest now. I just saw Mu'er wash her face and lie down when I came out and saw that my elder sister had returned," Pei Yunzhi said.
Pei Yuezhi nodded and said she would go back to her room first.
When I got back to the room, I saw that Fan Mu was already half asleep.
"Why do people in ancient times get sleepy as soon as it gets dark?" Pei Yuezhi thought to herself.
I've been here for a while now, and although my sleep schedule is quite regular and healthy, I just can't bring myself to go to bed this early.
After a quick wash and a quick wipe of her body, Pei Yuezhi lay down on the bed and dozed off.
As soon as she lay down, Pei Yuezhi smelled a faint fragrance, like the scent of a sachet. Her nose is always very sensitive, and she smelled it immediately.
Looking up at the bed frame, I noticed a sachet hanging at the head and foot of the bed.
