Chapter 490: Modern Era (If-Things) (18)
"Here, this is yours."
Anuo saw that her roommates were taking the snacks she had put on the table, but Lin Xu was sitting there without moving. She grabbed a handful of candy and put it in front of Lin Xu.
Lin Xu said "thank you" and then said nothing more.
Anuo didn't seem to care. After handing out the snacks, she lay back down and didn't participate in the other girls' conversations.
She had just lain down when Baroque called her, "Nono, come out for dinner, I'm downstairs at your dorm."
"Okay, brother, wait a minute."
Anno had no choice but to get up and put on her shoes. After putting on her shoes, she opened the wardrobe to take out a hat. When she opened it, she exclaimed in confusion, "Hmm?"
The wardrobe contained very few clothes, only three or four sets, and it was quite empty. The clothes were also much too big for her, unlike what she usually wore.
Just as she was wondering, a hand reached out and closed the cabinet door. "This is my wardrobe."
Anuo turned her head and met Lin Xu's somewhat cold eyes.
Lin Xu patted the wardrobe next to him, "This is yours, the wardrobe for the lower bunk is on the right."
"Excuse me."
"fine."
After finishing speaking, Lin Xu turned around and returned to his seat to continue reading.
Anno opened her closet, which was filled with her clothes and a row of various hats.
She randomly picked one, put it on, and left the dormitory.
As soon as she stepped out of the dormitory building, she saw Baroque standing by the flower bed. Today was the first day of school, and the area around the dormitory was bustling with people. Sixteen-year-old Baroque had a mixed-race face, fair skin, and was tall. His presence there caught the attention of many girls.
"Nono."
Baroque spotted Anno immediately and quickly walked up to her.
He patted her head and laughed, "Let's go, what do you want to eat?"
"I'm fine with either."
Baroque thought for a moment and said, "There are quite a few restaurants around the school, so we can go out for the next couple of days. Once classes officially start, we'll only be able to go out on weekends. But there's also a cafeteria inside the school, and I've heard the food is pretty good."
Anno said, "Then let's go to the cafeteria. We'll be eating there from now on, so let's try it first and see how it tastes."
Baroque nodded: "Okay, let's go to the cafeteria."
After saying that, he led Anuo toward the cafeteria.
Mingguang's cafeteria is indeed quite good. It's spacious and bright, with three floors and a wide variety of dishes. Even during peak dining hours, it's not too crowded.
It's not even seven o'clock yet, and there are already quite a few students coming to the cafeteria for lunch. Baroque and Anno, this mixed-race brother and sister duo, get almost 100% of their attention, and some bolder ones even come up to ask for their class and name.
Baroque politely declined.
"Brother, which class are you in?"
After choosing her favorite food and sitting down, Anno asked Baroque questions while eating.
Baroque said, "We just had a placement test. If there are no problems, I should be in Class 1."
Anno said, "Then we won't be in the same class anymore."
She didn't take a placement test, and the school will assign her to classes based on her entrance exam scores, so she can only be placed in the last class.
Baroque said, "Why don't you retake the exam? I asked the teacher, and there is still a chance to retake it."
Anno shook her head. "With my grades, even if I retake the exam, I won't be much worse off."
Baroque chuckled and ruffled her hair. "You can fool others, but do you think you can fool your brother?"
Anuo's mouth was bulging from eating. "I didn't lie. I just wanted to do whichever question I wanted."
Baroque handed her the meat patty from the plate, saying, "Alright, alright, you didn't lie to your brother."
The two were enjoying their meal when several boys came over with their trays and sat down next to them.
Anno didn't pay any attention, but Baroque gave them a sharp glance.
"Are you freshmen?"
The tall boy next to Anno spoke first.
Anno glanced at him when she heard the voice, but seeing that he was a stranger, she continued eating without paying any attention.
Huo Xuan clicked his tongue, leaned back in his chair, stared at An Nuo, and said with a sly grin, "Little sister, eat more to grow taller. If you're not full, I have more."
It was meant as a joke, but to my surprise, she looked up and asked, "Really for me?"
Huo Xuan paused for a moment, then laughed and pushed the plate in front of her. "Here you go, it's freshly made and untouched."
The other boys who came with him started to tease him.
Huo Xuan slammed his hand on the table. "Shut up, all of you. Don't scare the kids."
Baroque frowned and glanced at them, then pushed away the plate in front of Anno. "Nono, if you're not full, I'll get you some more."
Seeing that Baroque looked unhappy, Anno picked up her plate and said, "I'll go with you."
Baroque took her hand and was about to lead her away.
Who are you?
The two were blocked from their way. Huo Xuan tapped the plate behind them and said to the person who blocked their way, "What are you doing? Why are you blocking people?"
The two boys hesitated for a moment, then stepped aside.
Anno loosened her grip on the plate.
After getting another serving of food, Baroque led Anno to the second floor to eat, keeping a distance from the students they had just met.
Baroque instructed Anno, "Nono, if you encounter people like them again, just leave and don't accept anything from them, understand?"
Anno nodded. "Understood."
Looking at his sister who was diligently eating, Baroque was still worried. "Don't accept any food. We can give you anything you want."
Anuo rested her chin on her hand and looked at him, then reached out and pinched his cheek. "I know, brother."
After finishing their meal, Baroque was still worried that the boys might be waiting for them, so he carefully scouted the area before escorting Anno back to her dormitory.
Seeing his cautious demeanor, Anuo asked in confusion, "Brother, what are you afraid of? If they upset me, I'll just teach them a lesson."
Baroque said, "I don't want anyone to upset you, nor do I want you to take action."
He was well aware of his sister's abilities, but even so, as her older brother, he still felt he had to protect her.
Anno returned to her dormitory, which was just as lively as it had been before she left.
They were talking about some of their favorite celebrities and the variety shows they participated in, and they were laughing happily about something.
Fifteen or sixteen is the most youthful and beautiful age, full of energy and enthusiasm for new things.
They explored the world, filled with curiosity and longing for everything.
Amidst the laughter and joy, Lin Xu remained an oddball, wearing headphones and softly reciting words.
Anno didn't know what they were talking about. She never paid attention to celebrities or variety shows. She usually only watched things related to flying vehicles online.
Airplanes, rockets, the search for extraterrestrial life, etc.
Having just finished eating, she didn't want to lie down in bed, so she sat down opposite Lin Xu and took out a piece of white paper to draw her vehicle model.
Lin Xu glanced at her, then continued to focus on the words.
The dormitory lights are turned off at 10 p.m., and everyone starts lining up to shower. Anuo doesn't squeeze in with them; she waits until they're all done before she goes to shower.
However, there were too many people, and everyone showered quite late. By the time it was her turn, the dormitory lights had already been turned off.
Anno is not afraid of the dark; on the contrary, she likes places with dim lighting.
The people in the dormitory were a little worried about her, and they turned on their phone flashlights to try and hand her their phones for light.
A figure reached the bathroom door faster than them and knocked. "Anno, do you need a flashlight?"
Upon hearing the voice, Anno said, "No need."
After hearing this, Lin Xu left the power station at the door without moving.
Everyone in the dormitory had their phone flashlights on. When they heard Lin Xu call Anuo's name, they exchanged glances.
Xia Meng whispered to the girl in the bed opposite her, "She hasn't said anything and doesn't pay attention to us. She actually knows Anuo's name."
Xia Meng nudged her lightly with her elbow. "She should still be paying attention to our chat. We can talk to her more often. Lin Xu seems to be a rather introverted person."
The girl added, "Annuo doesn't talk much either, but she's so cute and innocent."
When Anuo was mentioned, their conversation inexplicably started again, and they chatted quietly.
Lin Xu leaned against the bathroom door, listening to them talk about Anuo with her head down. Several small insects were attracted by the beam of her flashlight and flew into the light. She turned off the flashlight and closed the sliding door separating the balcony from the inner room to prevent the insects from flying in.
As she turned off the flashlight and closed the door, the girls chatting inside immediately fell silent.
After a while, a girl whispered, "Does she think we're too noisy?"
Xia Meng said, "The lights are already out. We have to gather tomorrow, so let's go to sleep early."
As soon as she spoke, the others got into bed, but they were all too excited to sleep and were playing on their phones.
We have to hand in our phones tomorrow. We were notified when we enrolled that we can only pick them up on weekends.
When Anuo came out of the shower, she saw Lin Xu standing at the bathroom door with a mobile power station.
"Are you waiting for the toilet? I'm done washing up."
Anno stepped aside to make way for her.
Lin Xu glanced at her and hummed in agreement.
When Anuo reached the bedside, she noticed a light shining on her.
She looked back and saw that Lin Xu had already turned off the flashlight and gone into the bathroom.
Anno didn't sleep well on her first night at school.
Her parents made her bed very soft and comfortable, but she probably wasn't used to it. At home, she either slept with her mother or her sister, and there was always someone around her.
The school's wake-up bell rang at six o'clock the next morning. It took a lot of willpower for Anuo to get out of bed, and he washed up with his eyes closed for almost the entire time.
She walked towards the classroom in a daze the whole way.
She hasn't been assigned to a class yet. There's still half a month of military training left, and she'll be reassigned to a class after that. Right now, the classes are assigned randomly.
Anuo, Xia Meng, Lin Xu, and another roommate are all in the same class for the time being. They don't have to attend class today; they just listen to the teacher talk about some arrangements in the classroom.
Anuo was so sleepy that she found a seat in the back row by the window and lay down to sleep. She had no idea what the teacher said.
When she woke up, the teacher was no longer in the classroom, and the students were all chatting amongst themselves.
After looking around in confusion, someone next to her handed her a set of military training uniforms.
"I got you the smallest size, I don't know if it will fit you."
Anuo turned her head and saw Lin Xu sitting next to her.
