Chapter 489: Modern Era (If-Things) (17)
"It's a good thing you don't have to take the exam; these questions are way too difficult."
As soon as Anno arrived at the school gate, Tuka rushed up to her, hugged her arm, and complained.
Seeing her grief-stricken expression, Anuo asked, "Is it difficult? Even more difficult than high school to high school?"
This semester, Anno entered high school, but unlike her brother Ota and sister Tao Tao Le, she did not continue her studies in the same school from elementary to high school. Instead, she took the entrance exam for a different high school.
Tuka is her junior high school classmate, and she is also non-human; she is a cute little fox.
She treated every exam like a major battle, wishing she could devour the entire book and transform it into knowledge in her mind.
Tuka leaned on her shoulder and sighed, "It makes no difference to me, unlike you, who always finds exams so easy."
Anno smiled. "But my grades are just average too."
Tuka glanced at her, then put his arm around her and whispered, "Little Nuonuo, tell me honestly, do you actually know how to do those questions?"
Anuo slung her bag over her shoulder. "If I were capable, would my grades have been only average? This time, I'm just like you, a bottom-of-the-class student who barely made it into Mingguang No. 1 Middle School."
Tuka looked at her suspiciously. Having been her classmate for three years, she considered herself to know her quite well. However, as a special group of non-humans, everyone had some secrets.
"Let's not talk about that. How was your competition this time? That damn placement exam made me miss the live broadcast, I didn't even have time to watch it."
Anno thought of her opponent, who had been beaten black and blue, and said, "Not bad, I guess I barely won."
Tuka laughed, "Barely won? Don't give me that. I bet you made them cry."
Anno smiled and said, "Pretty much."
"Tsk tsk tsk, you've already won the junior Sanda championship three times in a row."
"Yes, there won't be a fourth edition."
Tuka asked in confusion, "What, is the next competition not going to be held?"
Anno said, "I'm not participating."
Originally, it was her coach who asked her to participate in this competition; to be precise, he begged her to go.
In order to get her to participate in the competition, we searched for a lot of delicious food for her, and sent her food and models, hoping that our little princess would be able to participate in the competition.
If she goes, the outcome of the competition is basically a foregone conclusion.
Now that her name is on his name, his Sanda gym is packed with people signing up, and the coach just sits there grinning every day.
"Okay, this kind of human competition is no fun. Their physical strength can't withstand a few tickles from us."
Anno remained noncommittal.
Tuka added, "However, there are still some relatively strong humans."
Anno seemed to know who she was talking about, raising an eyebrow: "For example?"
Tuka mumbled, "It's that guy."
Anno: "How am I supposed to know if you don't tell me your name?"
Tuka clicked his tongue and lightly punched her, "Your older brother."
Anuo said "Oh," and added, "Big brother."
"Little Nuonuo, are you doing this on purpose? You must know who I'm talking about."
"I don't know. After all, besides my brother, there are quite a few other physically strong humans. Aren't those people from the Special Administration Bureau like that?"
The two walked side by side into the school. Today was their first official day of school. The school gate was crowded with parents dropping off their children, and the cars were packed, making it a lively scene.
The high school was far from home but close to the Special Administration Bureau, so Anno chose to live on campus.
Her parents had already sent her luggage to school in advance, and she came straight to school after the competition.
She and Tuka were not in the same dormitory, so they separated and went back to their respective dormitories when they arrived at the dormitory building.
Anno arrived a bit late; it's 5:30 in the afternoon now. Judging from the bed arrangement, everyone should be there. However, there's only one girl still in the bathroom in the dorm; the others have probably gone to eat or buy daily necessities.
She glanced around the dormitory. It was an eight-person room with a private bathroom and balcony. There was a long table in the middle, with one seat for each person. The overall space was neither large nor small, but it certainly couldn't compare to home.
She found her bed by a rabbit doll on the bed, the lower bunk on the far right.
Her parents had already made her bed and hung up a mosquito net with all sorts of toys on it, trying to make it feel like home.
She had just sat down when her phone rang. She picked it up and saw it was a video call from her mother.
As soon as she answered the call, she saw her mother on the other end wearing work clothes, with what looked like the floor-to-ceiling windows of her office behind her.
"Baby, have you arrived at school yet?"
Anno is already thirteen years old this year, but her parents still call her "baby" all the time.
"Yes, Mom, I'm at the dorm."
"It's good that you've arrived. Your dad and I brought you some food, which we've put in the cabinet. We've sent you the cabinet combination to your phone, so please take a look."
While working, Luo Jin said to her, "I've divided the food into two portions for you. One portion is for your roommates, and if that's not enough, Mom will bring you some more."
"Okay, Mom."
Luo Jin continued to instruct her, "I see that your dormitory has a washing machine, but shoes are not easy to wash. Don't wash them yourself. If they get dirty, I will bring you a clean one."
Anuo listened to her mother's many worried instructions. This was the first time in a long time that she had left home and lived alone at school. They had always taken care of her in every little detail.
They initially disagreed with the idea of her staying in a dormitory, suggesting instead that she buy a house near the school and move in, but Anuo refused.
Now that she and Baroque, the youngest in the family, are both in high school and no longer need their parents' constant care, they focus on their work at the Special Administration Bureau. Anno doesn't want to trouble them, and she can take care of herself now.
She used to rely heavily on her family, but as she has grown up over the years and learned a lot, she is now able to live independently.
However, Anuo still felt a little uncomfortable looking at the empty dormitory.
After hanging up the phone, Anuo sat cross-legged on the bed, staring blankly at the doll ornament above her head.
I've been busy with the competition these past few days, so now I can finally relax and take a break.
After a long while, the door to the dormitory toilet opened, and the girl inside came out and looked at Anuo sitting on the bed.
Lin Xu was stunned when he saw her.
She was washing clothes in the bathroom when she heard the noise outside. The mother's instructions were very detailed, making her think that her roommate must be a pampered little princess at home. But when she came out, she was surprised to find that the roommate was so young.
She looks only twelve or thirteen years old, but she's already in high school?
No wonder her mother was extremely worried and kept giving her instructions.
Anuo turned around when he heard the noise. The girl in front of him was holding a basin of clothes. Her short hair, which only reached her neck, was neatly trimmed.
She had delicate features, thin lips, and slender eyebrows, and looked somewhat aloof.
Anno was never very talkative with people he didn't know well, and the girl in front of him didn't seem to be good at communicating with people either. After looking at each other for a while, Anno spoke first.
Her gaze fell on the basin of clothes she was holding, and she pointed to the balcony, "There's a washing machine."
Lin Xu stared blankly at the beautiful and delicate girl in front of him, who seemed almost unreal, for a moment before snapping out of his daze when he heard her voice: "I'm used to washing by hand."
Then the two of them fell silent again.
Before long, the girls in the dormitory returned one after another. Several of them obviously knew each other and gathered together, chatting and laughing, sharing the food they had bought.
Anno lay on the bed playing games with her headphones on, oblivious to everything around her.
There are always one or two outgoing people in the dormitory who are good at leading and communicating with others. Even if you only met them on the first day, you can quickly become familiar with them.
The most lively girl quickly became acquainted with the other five girls in the dorm, leaving only Lin Xu, who was sitting on the edge of the long table reading with headphones on, and Anuo, who was playing games on her bed.
Both of them were wearing headphones, which seemed out of place in the lively dormitory. Everyone was new and wanted to get to know each other. They would be classmates for three years and hoped to get along well.
The other girls noticed them and didn't want to ignore them, but they didn't seem to want to talk to them.
The most lively Xia Meng hesitated for a moment, then took the food and went to talk to Lin Xu.
Lin Xu saw someone sit down in front of her, so she took off her headphones.
Xia Meng chatted with her enthusiastically for a few minutes. Apart from nodding, she only said two sentences: "Hello" and "Thank you."
Seeing Lin Xu's somewhat indifferent attitude, even the most enthusiastic person would lose interest in continuing the conversation.
Thinking about the future harmony in the dormitory, Xia Meng took the snacks and walked towards another roommate who was wearing headphones and ignoring them.
Anno was engrossed in playing a puzzle game when a bag of potato chips was handed to her. "Hello, my lovely new roommate."
Upon seeing the food, she immediately put down her game console, sat up, and looked at the person in front of her.
After seeing her face, the dormitory fell silent.
Xia Meng's mouth was slightly open, her heart pounded twice, as if something had struck her heart.
Anno looked at the girl in front of her, who was staring at her blankly with potato chips in her hand. After hesitating for a moment, she asked, "Are these for me?"
Xia Meng snapped out of her daze and stuffed the potato chips into her arms. "Yes, yes, they're for you."
She was inexplicably excited, "Excuse me, you're so beautiful!"
Anno politely replied, "Thank you."
Seeing that she wasn't as aloof as the other girl, the other girls gradually gathered around her.
They kept praising her for being pretty and cute. Anuo had heard similar things countless times since she was a child. She didn't have much to say, but she would respond earnestly. In Xia Meng's eyes, she was just a very cute and innocent little girl.
“You look so young, how old are you?” Xia Meng asked.
Anno said, "Thirteen."
Xia Meng and the others: "?! Thirteen?"
"I thought I was old enough to be the youngest at fifteen, but I didn't expect there to be someone younger than me. I'm so touched."
"My God, you got into Mingguang No.1 High School at such a young age, are you a genius?"
Anuo shook her head and told them about her poor middle school entrance exam scores.
After listening, they all comforted her, saying, "You're still so young! It's amazing that you even got in!"
"Yeah, that means you're smarter than us, and you might even surpass us in the future."
Anuo got out of bed, opened the closet, and distributed the snacks her parents had prepared for her roommates.
"My parents gave it to you."
Hearing her honest confession, Lin Xu couldn't help but look up at her.
