Chapter 4 Expectations

"Mother, let me take a look at your leg." Qin Sanniang was not speaking without reason. She was a forensic doctor and a graduate of the Armed Police Medical College. She had some ability to treat common surgical injuries.

"Oh dear, it's nothing, it's been fine for a while now." Liu quickly put down her hand that was rubbing her leg. There are no parents in the world who want to worry about their children.

Qin San Niang missed her parents a little. She wondered how heartbroken they would be when they learned of her death. Fortunately, she had an older brother and her sister-in-law had just given birth to her second child, so she had something to hold onto. She hoped they could get through this time soon.

When did her eldest daughter go to see a doctor? Liu was surprised and suspicious. After all, she was her own flesh and blood. How could her true nature be hidden from her mother? But her daughter was still the same daughter, yet there seemed to be something different about her. However, her mother could always find a suitable reason for her own daughter.

"Third Sister, I know your mother-in-law is skilled in medicine. Could it be that she taught you?"

Liu was acquainted with her deceased mother-in-law, Xu; otherwise, they wouldn't have arranged this marriage across several villages. In the previous dynasty, female physicians were very common, especially daughters from poor families. As long as they had some talent, they could be sent to pharmacies as apprentices.

Liu learned the art of saving lives, while Xu learned medicine properly from a doctor. She used to be somewhat envious and jealous of this, but unfortunately, she didn't have the talent.

It turns out that she and Wang Dalang were childhood sweethearts who had arranged their marriage! But that's not the point. The point is that her mother gave her a very easy way out.

As the saying goes, "Even when you're sleepy, someone will bring you a pillow," and Qin San Niang readily agreed, "That's right, Mother. My mother-in-law taught me a lot. It's just a pity she passed away so young." She sighed, truly feeling indignant for her deceased mother-in-law. Not three years after her passing, Old Man Wang remarried. Men's words are deceitful! They're all heartless men!

On second thought, skipping relationships with men altogether, having kids and money in hand feels pretty good!

Liu was surprised, never expecting Xu to treat her eldest daughter so sincerely, and she was even more moved.

Sensing that they had strayed from the topic, Qin San Niang quickly steered the conversation back on track. "Mother, what I want to tell you is that I actually died once last night. But in a flash of white light, I saw my mother-in-law. She told me to take care of the children and live well. She also took me to a fairyland. This fairyland has everything—food, drink, and supplies—enough for our family to survive the famine."

Hearing this, Liu's expression gradually became solemn. People nowadays all believe in gods, and if she were Xu, she would certainly try to protect her last remaining bloodline. "Was that black candy also taken from the fairyland?"

Qin San Niang nodded in agreement.

Liu was overjoyed; with food, their precious children could live well. But then she thought again and felt uneasy. "Third Sister, won't this shorten your lifespan?"

If that were the case, Madam Liu would absolutely not agree. What would be the point of her life without her eldest daughter? If it meant shortening her lifespan, she might as well let her pay the price; after all, she was already a cripple anyway.

Hearing her say that, Qin San Niang was somewhat moved, but she had to cover up the lie she had told.

“Mother, don’t be afraid, it’s alright! The immortal from that place appeared in my dream and said that the Wang family’s ancestor once saved him. However, this matter is too shocking, and I dare not tell the children about it. If there is anything inappropriate, Mother, you will definitely help me cover it up.”

Madam Liu nodded. Of course, this couldn't be said. The children were all too young; she was afraid they might accidentally let something slip. Something unusual was definitely amiss. She only had one daughter, Third Sister, and she didn't want to be burned as a monster!

Having reassured Liu, Qin Sanniang felt much more at ease. However, she didn't forget to check on Liu's leg; the fracture hadn't fully healed, and a splint would be best. Unfortunately, such a solution wasn't available at the moment; she would have to try to find a vehicle in the city in a few days.

The eldest child was still a little annoyed when he woke up, realizing he had slept for so long without realizing it. He quickly went to his mother and grandmother and said, "Mother, Grandmother, I accidentally overslept. Let's hurry on our way!"

"Big brother, you've worked hard carrying your sister on your back. It's okay to sleep a little longer. Hurry up and eat this." As she spoke, she took out a steaming hot meat bun from her bundle and handed it to him. Seeing that Big brother's hands were covered in black soot, she used the burlap cloth she had just used to wipe his hands to clean them.

When Da Wa saw the big, white, plump meat bun his mother handed him, his eyes widened and his mouth formed an "O" shape. He could only eat such big meat buns when his father was still alive, during the New Year's market, and even then, they weren't this soft and fluffy.

Not to mention the eldest daughter, even Liu was extremely surprised when she saw this. If she hadn't already known that her eldest daughter had such abilities, she probably would have fainted.

But the eldest daughter is still the same eldest daughter; there's no doubt about the small mole on the back of her right hand!

The eldest child swallowed hard. "Mother, leave this for my younger sister and brother. I'm not hungry." As he spoke, he deliberately sticks out his little belly.

My dear child, even if your belly is sticking out, it's still flat...

To be honest, as a mother, I should be very happy that my child is so sensible!

“Big brother, this is yours. Your younger brother’s and sister’s are in the basket. Your mother and grandmother have already eaten.” As she spoke, Qin San Niang pulled open a corner of the basket to show him.

Seeing that there were still two big meat buns in the basket, Da Wa couldn't resist any longer. He took a bite and the aroma of meat filled the air. He really wanted to swallow his tongue. He finished the bun in a few bites and even licked his oily fingers.

"Mom, these buns are so delicious!"

"Eldest child, remember this: these buns were given to us by the immortals, but you can't tell anyone else. Otherwise, not only will they be snatched away, but the immortals will also get angry and there won't be any food left!" Liu said sternly to her grandson. She wanted to cover this up for her eldest daughter, so that even if something went wrong, she could pin the blame on herself.

Da Wa had always loved his grandmother. He had no memory of his biological grandmother, and he didn't even want to mention his stepmother. He had to listen to what his grandmother said, so he nodded solemnly.

Qin San Niang was very satisfied that the child did not continue to ask about the immortals, otherwise it would have really given her a headache.

When Xiao Er and A Nan woke up and saw the meat buns, they had the same expression. They ate them like little animals that had been starving for a long time, which made Qin San Niang very worried that they would choke. She could only follow Liu Shi's example and pat the children's backs and feed them water.

The eldest child vigorously fanned the surrounding area with his coat to make sure their clothes no longer smelled of meat. What a thoughtful child!

When the orphan and widow set off again, they felt refreshed and everyone showed long-lost smiles, with more anticipation for the future.

No matter how difficult things get, as long as you have hope, the future won't be bad!
