"I didn’t say that," Bennett shook his head. His denial seemed more like an indirect admission. "Boyce is my new friend. I like him."
"Friend? Ha!" Dong Zhenhong sneered. "Bennett, you don’t make friends that easily! How long have you known him?"
"No, no." Bennett shook his head repeatedly. "Making friends is about fate."
Dong Zhenhong frowned, instinctively feeling that Bennett’s next words would not be pleasant.
Bennett looked at Dong Zhenhong, smiling, and said, "How long have we known each other? We should be thankful we’re not enemies."
This remark was a veiled jab at Dong Zhenhong’s cowardice for not daring to do business with him all this time.
However, it was precisely because of Dong Zhenhong’s cowardice that he and Bennett had not become enemies, merely maintaining a state of mutual non-interference.
But this state of non-interference seemed about to crumble.
Dong Zhenhong furrowed his brows deeply, watching Bennett warily. "Bennett, I’m here this time just to find Boyce."
Although confronting Boyce directly might not yield much benefit, it would at least cause Boyce some discomfort.
As for Bennett, he looked Chinese but was soaked in foreign thoughts. They couldn’t see eye to eye, and Dong Zhenhong didn’t want to offend Bennett at this time.
If Bennett and Boyce joined forces, Dong Zhenhong knew he would be finished.
Bennett laughed, clasping his hands behind his back. "Boyce is my guest today, and he’s my friend. Sorry, Old Mr. Dong, you might have to go back the way you came."
Dong Zhenhong didn’t expect Bennett to actually team up with Boyce, and his eyelids twitched violently. "You..."
Before he could finish his sentence, a few black sedans suddenly appeared at the intersection ahead.
Bennett’s face changed drastically, glaring at Dong Zhenhong with a vicious look. "Dong Zhenhong, you have no sense of rules!"
Dong Zhenhong’s expression also turned panicked for a few seconds. He looked at the black sedans approaching them, and his heartbeat accelerated.
He quickly responded to Bennett, "I didn’t bring them!"
Then, he turned around and slapped his subordinate in the face, yelling angrily, "What’s going on? Didn’t you notice we were being followed?"
The subordinate, covering his face, said in a more panicked voice, "Mr. Hong! We weren’t followed!" 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
They hadn’t encountered a single car on the way here! How could cars have followed them so soon after they arrived?
The timing was too coincidental to ignore.
Seeing the black sedans getting closer, Bennett quickly pulled out the gun from his subordinate’s waist, pressed the trigger, and shot at Dong Zhenhong’s right foot.
The gun, silenced, only made a light "pew" sound.
Dong Zhenhong quickly dodged behind his subordinate, avoiding the bullet.
The bullet hit the subordinate’s right foot, causing him to howl in pain, "Ah..."
Bennett stared fiercely at Dong Zhenhong, who was hiding behind. "Dong Zhenhong, just you wait!"
With that, Bennett led his people to retreat to the underground parking lot, not wasting any more time on Dong Zhenhong.
"Bennett! I really didn’t bring them!" Dong Zhenhong shouted.
But Bennett was convinced that Dong Zhenhong had deliberately brought them and wouldn’t listen to his explanation.
Seeing Bennett’s people all retreating into the abandoned building area, Dong Zhenhong angrily pushed away the subordinate he had pulled over to shield himself from the bullet.
Dong Zhenhong cursed angrily and was about to get in the car and leave when he suddenly stopped.
Wait a minute!
He wasn’t involved in Bennett and Boyce’s transaction tonight. Why should he run?
Dong Zhenhong looked up at the abandoned building area, a calculating smile slowly appearing on his lips, his eyes flashing with a quick, unreadable expression.
His subordinate, clutching his wounded leg, urged, "Mr. Hong, let’s go! If we wait any longer, those cars will surround us! We won’t be able to escape!"
"Escape for what? Did I commit a crime?" Dong Zhenhong slapped him again, "Get in the car and take care of your leg."
"Yes, Mr. Hong." The subordinate swallowed his cries of pain, climbed into the car, and started looking for the first aid kit to treat his leg wound, fearing excessive blood loss.
Dong Zhenhong squinted at the black sedans and then waved his hand. "The rest, follow me!"
"Yes, Mr. Hong!"
The remaining men immediately followed Dong Zhenhong into the abandoned building area.
Meanwhile, elsewhere.
Maybe it was the remaining half of the money that Bennett couldn’t let go of, or maybe he truly considered Boyce his friend. When Bennett was about to retreat to the underground parking lot, he suddenly changed direction, heading towards the open garden.
His subordinate hurriedly said, "Boss, the people outside are almost here. We should leave first!"
"Get the cars ready," Bennett instructed, continuing to walk quickly.
Entering the open garden, he saw Boyce sitting on the bench as before, with the money he had left untouched.
A surge of indescribable emotion rose in Bennett’s heart. He walked quickly over, "Boyce, that coward Dong Zhenhong brought people here. We need to leave!"
"Dong Zhenhong brought people here?" Boyce frowned. "Why should we leave? How many people did he bring?"
"No, he brought..." Bennett mouthed the words "police."
Boyce looked surprised, as if he hadn’t expected Dong Zhenhong to bring the police.
He stood up and quietly instructed his people, "Bring the goods. We’re leaving."
"Yes, Boyce!"
Bennett also signaled his people to bring the other half of the boxes.
Both groups moved towards the underground parking lot.
Just as they were getting into the cars to leave the abandoned building area, a gunshot rang out at the parking lot exit.
Dong Zhenhong and his men had blocked the exit.
Standing at the front, Dong Zhenhong stared at Boyce’s vehicle and shouted, "Boyce! Let’s talk!"
Bennett rolled down the window and yelled at Dong Zhenhong, "Dong Zhenhong, are you doing this on purpose? The people outside are already here, and you’re blocking the way? Do you believe I won’t ram you with my car?"
"Dong Zhenhong, I’m not looking for trouble with you. You can go." Dong Zhenhong spread his hands. "I just want to talk to Boyce!"
Bennett gritted his teeth, cursing as he grabbed the gun from his subordinate, ready to shoot Dong Zhenhong again when Boyce’s calm voice came from the car next to him.
"Bennett, you go first." Boyce remained calm, sitting in the back seat, and said to Bennett, "He’s here for me."
Once again, Bennett felt a surge of emotion.
In all his years in this business, it was the first time he had met someone so straightforward and loyal! Even though he had known Boyce for less than a week.
Bennett bit his lip. "Dong Zhenhong must be jealous that Boyce and I made a big deal, so he’s causing trouble."
Bennett believed that Boyce being targeted by Dong Zhenhong was partly his fault.
Moreover, if Boyce were caught tonight, Bennett knew he would also be caught sooner or later.
Now, he and Boyce were practically in the same boat, and neither could afford to get caught.
Thinking this, Bennett turned to Dong Zhenhong, eyes full of killing intent. "Drive through!"
After all, Dong Zhenhong had lived long enough. Sending him to the afterlife early could be considered a final gift from Bennett.
Dong Zhenhong, initially blocking the exit with his men, heard the sudden acceleration of the engine and turned pale, quickly stepping aside.
His subordinates also hurriedly dodged Bennett’s car.
Bennett led his men to clear the parking lot exit, knowing Dong Zhenhong’s target was Boyce, and deliberately positioned his car behind Boyce’s.
He leaned out to signal Boyce’s men, "You go first! I’ll handle this! Dong Zhenhong won’t dare touch me!"
In the driver’s seat, Boyce’s subordinate didn’t dare follow anyone else’s orders and waited for his boss’s instructions.
Boyce lifted his eyelids slightly, smirking, and said slowly, "No rush, let’s wait a bit longer."
The subordinate in the passenger seat was already panicked, looking back at Boyce urgently, "Boyce, if we wait any longer, we might not be able to leave."
Boyce said nothing, his eyes growing colder as he stared at him.
The subordinate felt a chill down his spine and quickly lowered his head, "Sorry, Boyce! I spoke out of turn!"
In just those few seconds, Dong Zhenhong realized that Bennett was trying to protect Boyce and let him escape. He quickly pulled the trigger, aiming at Boyce’s car tires.
The tires, however, were specially modified, impervious to bullets. Instead, the bullet rebounded towards Dong Zhenhong.
Dong Zhenhong panicked and quickly dodged.
Gritting his teeth, he aimed his gun again, this time at the small gap in Boyce’s window, and fired with determination.
Just then, there was a screech of brakes outside, followed by the sound of approaching footsteps.
Clearly, they were surrounded, and it wouldn’t be easy to drive out.
