Chapter 474 His Fiancée?
She knew Zhou Mubin's annual legal counsel fee all too well; last year, a competitor spent five million yuan but still couldn't secure a spot.
His team's risk control solutions alone have helped the company avoid many pitfalls; it's like a windfall. "You know how significant that is, right?"
Zhang Da patted her shoulder, his tone urgent, "A lawyer of this caliber is hard to hire even with money. The fact that he's willing to help us for free is mostly because of you. When you take him home later, make sure he's well taken care of and doesn't offend him."
As he spoke, he put Zhou Mubin's arm on Cui Xiao's shoulder without saying a word. "Vice President Cui, I have to go back now. My wife just called and said she has something to attend to. I'll leave Attorney Zhou in your care."
Before he finished speaking, Zhang Da got into the taxi that was already waiting.
Cui Xiao helped Zhou Mubin, who reeked of alcohol, to stand on the roadside, feeling like her head was about to explode.
She couldn't refuse. Putting aside the cooperation, the free legal counsel alone was enough to make her bite the bullet and take on this mess.
She struggled to get Zhou Mubin into the car. As she fastened his seatbelt, he suddenly leaned closer, his warm breath carrying the rich aroma of red wine against her neck. "Cui Xiao, you still smell so good..."
Cui Xiao recoiled as if electrocuted, got into the driver's seat, and started the car.
Throughout the journey, Zhou Mubin, in the passenger seat, remained silent, but he was not entirely still either.
He turned to the side, his gaze fixed on her face, from her hands on the steering wheel to her tightly pursed lips, his eyes intensely focused.
Cui Xiao felt uncomfortable under his gaze and wanted to reprimand him several times, but when she caught a glimpse of his reddened eyes, she swallowed the words back.
"Why?" the passenger in the passenger seat suddenly asked, his voice hoarse from drinking. "Why did you leave without a word back then?"
Cui Xiao gripped the steering wheel tightly, and the tires lurched slightly as they went over the speed bumps.
She didn't say anything, she just wanted to get the person there as quickly as possible and leave.
Zhou Mubin, however, was relentless. He leaned closer, grabbed her wrist with a light touch, but with an unyielding stubbornness that left her no room to break free.
Her voice tightened, "I'm not a doctor, and staying won't solve anything."
"You're really ruthless."
Zhou Mubin's voice trembled with tears, his vulnerability after drinking was laid bare, "I've been angry with you for five years, but the moment I saw you downstairs at Mingda Technology Building that day, I stopped being angry... Cui Xiao, I've never given up on you, not even for a single day."
His head rested on her shoulder, his breath reeking of alcohol mixed with suppressed sobs. "I panic when I can't see you, and I feel terrible when I see you standing with someone else. I just want you back in my life, even if... even if it's just to be your lover."
He paused, then looked up, his bloodshot eyes fixed on her. "Who is the man you married? What makes him better than me?"
Looking at his drunken and out-of-control state, Cui Xiao felt a surge of bitterness, grievance, and resentment.
She bit her lip, remaining silent, but pushed him away forcefully, her voice as cold as ice, "We're here, get out."
The car came to a smooth stop in front of the hotel. Cui Xiao got out first, walked around to the passenger side, and opened the door.
Zhou Mubin struggled to get up, but due to the effects of the alcohol, he swayed and fell back into his seat, his hand unconsciously grabbing Cui Xiao's clothes like a spoiled child.
Cui Xiao frowned, patiently bent down, and once again put his arm on her shoulder, struggling to drag him toward the villa entrance. "Don't pull me, I'll help you up."
Just as the two had steadied themselves and Cui Xiao was about to ask Zhou Mubin which floor he was on, a surprised female voice suddenly came from behind them, "Young Master Zhou?"
Cui Xiao's body stiffened abruptly, and Zhou Mubin also paused, turning his head to look with blurry, drunken eyes.
Under a streetlamp not far away stood a woman wearing black jeans and a maroon shirt. Her short hair was neat and tidy, her makeup was clean and refreshing, and she had a heroic air about her.
The woman quickly stepped forward and, seeing Zhou Mubin reeking of alcohol and practically clinging to Cui Xiao, a hint of surprise flashed in her eyes before replaced by concern. "How did you get so drunk?"
Zhou Mubin squinted for a while before recognizing the other person. "It's you?"
His tone carried a clear sense of estrangement.
The woman smiled. "Who else could it be but me?"
After speaking, the woman's gaze finally fell on Cui Xiao. She looked Cui Xiao up and down, and then gave a polite smile.
The woman extended her hand. "Hello, thank you for bringing him back. Please hand him over to me. I am his fiancée, Lin Yuwei."
Li Yuwei?
Miss Lin?
The three simple words exploded in Cui Xiao's ears like a thunderclap.
She looked at the woman before her; she was poised and elegant, and impeccably dressed. In Cui Xiao's memory, Zhou Mubin had never dated a woman of this style before.
It seems that Zhou Mubin must be very satisfied with Miss Lin to be able to ignore his usual preferences.
Judging from the looks of it, Lin Yuwei had just returned from outside, so they must be living together...
This realization sent her blood rushing to her head, only to recede completely in the next second, leaving her face as pale as paper, barely able to support Zhou Mubin.
Lin Yuwei is his fiancée, so it's only natural that they live together.
Her thoughts have overstepped their bounds.
Cui Xiao hurriedly let go of Zhou Mubin's hand and pushed him towards Lin Yuwei, her voice trembling almost imperceptibly, "No, it's nothing, it's nothing."
Lin Yuwei caught the staggering Zhou Mubin steadily and thanked him politely, "Thank you so much for your help tonight. I'll have him treat you to dinner another day."
"You are welcome."
Cui Xiao spoke almost as if fleeing, then turned and walked quickly toward her car without even looking back.
Suddenly, Lin Yuwei asked again, "Beautiful lady, what's your name? I'll tell him later."
Cui Xiao's breath hitched, her forehead tensing. "It was President Zhang who asked me to bring Attorney Zhou back."
Lin Yuwei nodded.
It seems she's just a junior secretary, sent to deliver this drunkard, Zhou Mubin.
It's so late, and it's really not easy for this beautiful woman to go through all that trouble.
Lin Yuwei politely replied, "Thank you for your hard work, beautiful lady."
Cui Xiao had no time to think; she just wanted to leave this suffocating place immediately, as if if she hesitated even a second longer, her suppressed emotions would completely spiral out of control.
Even after getting into the car, Cui Xiao's heart still ached as she watched Zhou Mubin and Lin Yuwei's departing figures.
She thought that after five years apart, she had long forgotten him, and even when she learned of his engagement, Cui Xiao felt relieved.
However, seeing him and Miss Lin looking so well-matched today still brought back the hidden pain deep in my heart.
Cui Xiao frowned, gripped the steering wheel, and drove away.
Early in the morning, Zhou Mubin's head was throbbing with pain.
He opened his eyes while pressing his temples, his brain not yet fully activated, when Lin Yuwei's shout almost scared him out of his wits.
"You stinky man, you're awake?"
