Chapter 56 Damn it
"ah--"
"You shameless woman!"
The man screamed and covered one eye. The others kicked Ye Wan away and grabbed him.
"mother!"
"You are robbers! You are bandits!"
San Ya's cries, Da Ya's questions, and Er Ya's unconsciousness, all accompanied by onlookers pointing and whispering.
Ye Wan watched all of this with icy eyes.
She had never been this miserable even during the apocalypse; this damned feudal society.
"Don't cry, give Er Ya more water, I'll find a way to come back." Ye Wan said calmly to Daya, whose face was pale.
No sooner had he finished speaking than another burly man grabbed Daya and Sanya as well, shouting, "You two little ones aren't going anywhere either! Take us back, chop us up, and feed us to the dogs!"
Er Ya, who was lying unconscious on the ground, was kicked and pulled up, waking up in pain.
"Mother! Mother!"
Ye Wan hardened her heart; as long as she returned alive, whoever was responsible for this would die.
"Little wench, once Master Zhang gets tired of you, you're dead! If you still think about coming back, I'll kill you!" The burly man, covering one eye, spoke hatefully in Ye Wan's ear.
What's going on?
As Ye Wan was being led away with her mouth covered, her hands tied, a carriage stopped at the market entrance, and a middle-aged man in a long robe got off.
Ye Wan recognized him; it was Yantai's father, Steward Liu.
Manager Liu is here today to buy food for the old lady.
He mentioned that the young master had eaten noodles here, and since the young master had just left yesterday, the old lady missed him terribly, so she asked him to come and buy a serving to take home and try it.
But right now...
Manager Liu frowned. "What has this Lady Ye done wrong?"
He also learned from Yantai that the young woman's surname was Ye, and that the pears he gave to the old lady last time were bought from this Lady Ye.
The man holding Ye Wan said, "This woman's food killed people. Our superiors wanted to take them in for questioning, but she deliberately injured people in an attempt to escape."
Seeing that Manager Liu was dressed well, the group couldn't help but offer a cautious explanation.
Ye Wan's mouth was covered, preventing her from speaking. She struggled violently and was kicked in the calf, causing cold sweat to pour down her forehead from the pain.
"Our things are all clean, they're deliberately kidnapping people! Please, save us!" Da Ya's hair was disheveled, and she spoke in a trembling voice.
"Shut up, you brat!"
Daya was slapped across the face, and her voice rose even louder: "They're not government officials at all! They don't even have government uniforms!"
Manager Liu, who was originally planning to leave, frowned upon hearing this, "Do you have Lord Wu's warrant for arresting someone?"
The burly man holding Ye Wan was startled. "It all happened so suddenly. The officers only told us to arrest someone. We brothers were afraid they'd get away, so we came here without even changing our clothes! Who are you? Do you know our officers?"
Although Steward Liu had some doubts—how could someone die from eating something so good? And his young master had eaten it too—he was worried that something might go wrong with the upcoming provincial examination.
But as a servant, he didn't have the right to interfere, and he didn't want to meddle in other people's business. It was just a pity that the old lady couldn't eat noodles anymore.
Manager Liu made way, and Da Ya's eyes were filled with despair.
People around pointed and whispered, and several women spat at Ye Wan.
"I told you long ago that this woman was no good. She's got that vixen look on her face. And she sells things made from sweet potatoes for such a high price. Why doesn't she just rob people!"
"I knew her business was the best in the whole market. Turns out she added something she shouldn't have, and it even caused a death..."
Ye Wan's stall was doing brisk business, and he closed up early every day, which made many people envious.
Now that this has happened, many people are watching the spectacle and making sarcastic remarks, most of whom have never eaten it before.
That's human nature.
Ye Wan looked at Er Ya, who was being dragged away in pain and woke up, and Daya, whose face was swollen from being beaten, and San Ya, who was too scared to cry. She felt an indescribable sense of sorrow.
Just as she was about to find a less crowded place and was prepared to expose herself in order to make her move...
"Officer Li, these are bandits from the mountains, impersonating yamen runners."
Lin Anyuan's hair was casually tied up, and he spotted them at a glance. His hands under his sleeves clenched instantly.
Officer Li and his dozen or so men surrounded the six men. "Hey, you bandits, you have some nerve! To impersonate yamen runners in broad daylight, you're far too arrogant!"
Faced with so many constables, the men holding Ye Wan panicked instantly and said to Lin Anyuan, "Lin Anyuan, we are Zhang—"
Before he could finish speaking, Lin Anyuan dislocated his jaw with a sharp crack.
Just as the head constable, Li, was about to arrest someone, he was startled. "Brother Lin, what are you doing?"
This Brother Lin was someone Lord Wu had just appreciated, and I never expected that he would lead them to achieve such great merit as soon as he arrived.
Wasn't this move a bit too fast?
Lin Anyuan looked worried, "These people are extremely vicious, and so many people are watching. What if he implicates the adults..."
Upon hearing this, Officer Li was taken aback. "Yes, yes, you've thought of everything."
As he spoke, he ordered his men to gag these people.
The six men were so frightened by the sight of real constables that they were arrested in no time.
"Hey Li, what are you going to stuff in your mouth?" The constable looked left and right, but there was nothing to stuff in his mouth.
"Anything is fine, if all else fails, take off your socks and stuff them in!" Officer Li said, holding the man hostage.
The bailiff who was asking the question was a little embarrassed; he wasn't wearing socks.
Ye Wan and the three girls were released. The three girls wanted to call for their father, but Ye Wan covered their mouths and held them, so they could only cry softly.
Ye Wan's hair was disheveled and she looked extremely disheveled. Holding Sanya, she looked at Lin Anyuan, her whole body trembling.
Lin Anyuan turned his head, a cold glint in his eyes, "There are so many people watching, it's not elegant, I'll do it."
As soon as the words fell, he dislocated the jaws of several people one by one.
Officer Li felt a pang of jealousy just looking at him. This man was clearly a scholar, yet he was more efficient than them.
"Officer Li, please take your men back first. My wife and daughters..." Lin Anyuan said hesitantly, glancing at Ye Wan and the others with concern.
Officer Li glanced at Ye Wan and his three children, then patted him on the shoulder. "Hey, Brother Lin, you should settle things at home first."
Fortunately, Lin Anyuan arrived quickly today; it was also a stroke of luck. Otherwise, his wife and daughter would have been captured and tortured without his knowledge.
Thank you.
Officer Li escorted the six men away.
Lin Anyuan then hurriedly went to Ye Wan's side, "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine, let's check on Er Ya first." Ye Wan hurriedly squatted down, ignoring the pain in her legs.
Er Ya's face was covered in blisters; it had been rubbed raw and was now a bloody mess. She couldn't even cry out.
A hint of malice flashed in Lin Anyuan's eyes, and he hurriedly picked up Er Ya, "To the clinic."
Ye Wan picked up Sanya and followed behind with Daya, who was limping on one leg.
"Father, it hurts!"
Er Ya, who was in Lin Anyuan's arms, was in great pain. The tears that flowed down her face hurt even more, and she clung tightly to his clothes.
"Dad, slow down, Mom can't keep up."
Her mother finally accepted her as her daughter, so if she's obedient and well-behaved, her mother will like her.
Lin Anyuan glanced back at Ye Wan, who was limping and carrying Sanya, and suppressed the fierceness in his eyes.
Zhang Gui deserves to die.
