Lin Yanzhi x Duan Sheng ①

Lin Yanzhi x Duan Sheng ①

The base's iron gate slammed shut behind us with a heavy thud, mingled with the muffled roars of zombies in the distance.

Lin Yanzhi held Zhou Mo tightly in her arms. The wound on the back of the man's neck had turned bluish-black, and his breathing was as weak as a candle flickering in the wind.

"Please, give him another chance!" Lin Yanzhi roared at the crowd that had gathered around him. "He was only scratched, he hasn't mutated yet, please don't throw him out."

The people around him were expressionless, their stun guns gleaming coldly.

The base's rules have always been strict. Anyone bitten or scratched by a zombie, regardless of whether they show signs of mutation, must be dragged to the quarantine area. That place is nominally for quarantine, but in reality, it's no different from being thrown directly into a horde of zombies.

"Lin Yanzhi, don't waste your energy." Someone advised from the side, their tone tinged with sympathy but mostly numbness, "Your boyfriend is beyond saving."

“There’s still a way.” Lin Yanzhi’s eyes were red. “I heard… I heard there are inhibitors that can delay the spread of the virus. As long as he can hold on until the antidote is developed, he can survive.”

"Are you dreaming?" someone sneered. "That inhibitor is incredibly precious. The boss has only one in the entire base, and he risked his life to retrieve it when the research institute was shut down last month. It's something the boss uses to save his own life. Do you think he would just give it to anyone else?"

Boss...

Lin Yanzhi's heart sank. He and Zhou Mo had only been with the base for half a month, and they certainly weren't familiar with this person in charge. They had only met a few times, all at the base's assembly point.

He was a cold and hard man. Except when he issued combat orders, his voice was clear and powerful, and he rarely said anything superfluous.

Zhou Mo in his arms began to tremble again; he could feel his lover's life force slowly slipping away.

"Kid, you'd better let go of your boyfriend right now, or he'll bite you first once he fully mutates!"

Lin Yanzhi didn't speak, but looked down at Zhou Mo's painedly furrowed brows. This was his boyfriend of three years, his only attachment in the apocalypse. How could he just watch him get infected?

"Want to save your boyfriend?"

A voice suddenly came from behind the crowd. It wasn't loud, but it instantly silenced the noisy discussion.

Lin Yanzhi turned around abruptly.

Duan Sheng stood there, his clothes covered in dried black blood, looking like he had just returned from clearing out zombies.

His gaze first swept over Zhou Mo, who was barely breathing in Lin Yanzhi's arms, then slowly rose and fell back onto Lin Yanzhi's pale face.

Even in such a disheveled state, her slightly upturned eyes, straight nose, and tightly pursed full red lips still made her an eye-catching and beautiful face, like a white rose wilted by a rainstorm.

Everyone around held their breath, secretly thinking that Zhou Mo was completely finished now. The boss had come in person and would definitely order him to be dragged out on the spot. Lin Yanzhi had been desperately protecting him, refusing to let him be taken away, but now that he had run into the line of fire, he would probably be implicated and punished as well.

Even Lin Yanzhi herself thought so, and she tightened her grip on Zhou Mo's arm as if making a last-ditch effort.

But Duan Sheng simply walked step by step to him and stopped.

"You know the rules." His voice was cold, and his gaze swept lightly over the blood that belonged to Zhou Mo on Lin Yanzhi's face. "The inhibitor can hold out for seven days. After seven days, there will be no antidote, and she will still mutate."

Lin Yanzhi paused for a moment, her eyes instantly welling up with tears: "I know, as long as he can hold on for one more day... even just one more day would be good..."

Duan Sheng paused for a second at the vibrant color in the corner of his eye, then said nothing more. He took out a metal syringe from his waist bag and casually tossed it toward Lin Yanzhi.

The syringe traced an arc in the air, and Lin Yanzhi caught it steadily with her hand.

He looked down at the thing in his palm; inside the transparent syringe, a pale green liquid lay quietly.

It's an inhibitor, it really is an inhibitor.

He froze, his mind blank.

How could this be? How could Duan Sheng give him the inhibitor so easily?

"After Zhou Mo finishes his injection, prepare a private room for him," Duan Sheng instructed the two men beside him.

The two men were taken aback for a moment, then immediately replied, "Yes, boss."

Then he looked again at the handsome young man on the ground who was holding the inhibitor and staring blankly. His eyes remained calm, but his tone carried an invisible pressure.

"Lin Yanzhi, come to my room in ten minutes."
