While waiting, Li Baolong's thoughts drifted back to the days he spent with Wang Yumei. Those experiences in Xinjiang played out in his mind like a movie. He wondered if Wang Yumei felt the same way. This feeling that had gradually grown during his youth was like his personal space, full of unknowns and mysteries, waiting for him to explore and discover it further.
Around noon, sunlight filtered through dappled leaves onto the cake shop on the back street of the school. Li Baolong and Wang Yumei entered the shop one after the other. The shop was filled with a sweet aroma, and they found a quiet corner to sit facing each other. In front of them were exquisite cakes and freshly squeezed orange juice, and the corners of their mouths unconsciously turned up, their mood exceptionally pleasant.
"It's been so boring at home these past few days. It's so much more fun being with you," Wang Yumei said first, taking a small spoonful of cake and putting it in her mouth.
Li Baolong responded with a smile, "These past few days, besides resting, I've been tinkering with my little things." He took a sip of orange juice and continued, "In a few days, I plan to visit the university campus and also look for my cousin. I'm thinking of seeing if I can find a job on the weekend to earn some pocket money. You know, I'm all alone now, and I have to rely on myself to make a living."
Wang Yumei nodded gently, her eyes full of understanding and heartache: "Baolong, you've really had a tough time, but I believe you can definitely do it."
As they ate cake, they chatted freely, and the conversation gradually turned to their plans for university. Wang Yumei's eyes sparkled with anticipation: "I want to participate in more club activities in university to broaden my horizons and make more friends. What about you?"
After thinking for a moment, Li Baolong replied, "Besides wanting to study professional knowledge hard, I also want to accumulate more social experience, because I still have to walk my own path in the future."
Before they knew it, time had slipped away, and the two sat in the cake shop until the afternoon. Despite their reluctance, they had to face the impending separation.
“Let’s meet at Tianfu Square in Chengdu on National Day,” Li Baolong said earnestly, looking into Wang Yumei’s eyes. Wang Yumei blushed slightly and replied softly, “Okay, it’s a deal.”
They stood up and slowly walked out of the cake shop. The sun was still shining brightly outside. The two waved goodbye at the intersection, each carrying with them the anticipation of meeting again and the longing for university life. And their story, in these farewells and reunions, quietly wove a youthful love song that belonged only to them.
