Pei Xi hadn't seen Jiang Cheng smoke for a very, very long time, so long that he had almost forgotten that he could smoke.
Jiang Cheng never smoked in front of her; to be precise, he never smoked anywhere she could see him.
She never smelled any cigarette smoke on him.
She never explicitly said she disliked the smell of smoke, but he seemed to know it inexplicably.
Looking at the two cigarette butts, Pei Xi opened her eyes in surprise. She stood there for two seconds, then looked away as if she hadn't seen anything, and went to the bathroom to wash up.
After washing up, Jiang Cheng had just finished cooking and came out carrying two bowls.
Wisps of steam rose from the bowl, warming Jiang Cheng's face. Pei Xi keenly noticed that he seemed somewhat tired.
He looks like he hasn't had enough rest.
Seeing Pei Xi standing there, Jiang Cheng smiled and said, "You're up? Come and eat."
Pei Xi sat down at the dining table and saw the noodles in the bowl. The milky white noodles, glistening with a few drops of oil, looked chewy and smooth. Next to them were bright yellow poached eggs and emerald green vegetables, which looked very tempting and made one's mouth water.
Jiang Cheng sat down opposite her and said softly, "Eat it while it's hot."
Pei Xi nodded, "Okay."
The bowl of noodles was just the right amount, and she finished it hot. Pei Xi packed her things, and Jiang Cheng drove her back to school.
Pei Xi needed to go back to her dorm to get her books. The car stopped outside the dorm building, and as soon as Pei Xi unbuckled her seatbelt, Jiang Cheng leaned in and whispered, "Baby, give me a kiss."
Pei Xi smiled and leaned over to kiss him on the lips.
Jiang Cheng, however, did not move.
“Not enough,” he said.
Pei Xi hesitated for a moment, "Some classmates will see it."
She would be more relaxed if Jiang Cheng brought her back at night, but she was a little shy during the day.
Jiang Cheng looked at her intently and said stubbornly, "Just once."
Pei Xi couldn't refuse him, so she held the back of his neck and turned her head to kiss him.
"Is that alright?" she asked with a wink and a smile.
Jiang Cheng gave a very low "hmm," as if it wasn't enough, but he held back in the end.
He ran his fingers through Pei Xi's hair as he whispered, "I'll pick you up for dinner after class this afternoon."
Pei Xi was taken aback, and asked with some surprise, "Don't you have to work overtime?"
Jiang Cheng didn't deny it, only saying, "Will you come to the company to have dinner with me, and then leave work with me?"
“Okay.” Pei Xi nodded.
Jiang Cheng hummed in agreement.
"Then I'm leaving."
Pei Xi turned to open the car door, but Jiang Cheng leaned over and pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly.
"What's wrong?" Pei Xi was taken aback, then smiled. "Today's farewell ceremony was quite long."
Jiang Cheng didn't reply, so he hugged her even tighter and whispered in her ear, "Remember to think of me."
Pei Xi couldn't help but laugh. She gently patted his back, with a reassuring tone, "Okay, okay."
After hugging for a while, Jiang Cheng finally let go of her, and she opened the car door and got out.
Even after she entered the building, Pei Xi saw in the reflection on the glass door that Jiang Cheng was still staring at her in the car, not starting the engine for a long time.
Pei Xi frowned. She could clearly sense that Jiang Cheng was unusually clingy today; calling him a clingy person wouldn't be an exaggeration.
I don't know why, but everything was fine yesterday.
After class in the afternoon, Jiang Cheng came to pick her up from school as promised.
Pei Xi got into the car and, looking at his slightly tired face, said with some concern, "Actually, if you're busy, I can take a taxi myself."
"I still have time to pick you up," Jiang Cheng said softly, looking up and touching her hair.
Pei Xi smiled but did not speak.
They drove to the company building, parked the car in the garage, and took the elevator upstairs.
It was after get off work hours, and there was no one in the offices on the first floor. Jiang Cheng led Pei Xi into the office. It was getting dark, so he turned on the lights.
The lights were on, and Pei Xi saw several beautifully packaged takeout boxes on the table.
She went over and tested the temperature; it was warm, just right to eat.
Jiang Cheng opened the boxes one by one. Every dish was one of Pei Xi's favorites, and there was also a pumpkin sweet soup.
Then he took out an empty bowl and served soup to Pei Xi.
The pumpkin soup was sweet, warm, and tempting. Jiang Cheng's movements were very refined, gentle and slow, without spilling a single drop of soup.
The only problem was that the spoons provided by the restaurant were a bit small, so you had to scoop out a bowl of soup several times.
Pei Xi didn't sit down, but stood quietly to the side, watching Jiang Chengsheng's soup.
As he scooped up the last spoonful, she suddenly called out to him, "Ah Cheng."
Jiang Cheng looked up at her. "Hmm?"
Pei Xi pursed his lips and tentatively asked, "Did you... dream about something last night?"
Jiang Cheng felt a chill run down his spine, and his hand trembled uncontrollably, causing the soup in the spoon to splash out and leave a few glistening drops on the table.
He looked at Pei Xi in disbelief.
Pei Xi met his gaze directly, her expression also somewhat incredulous, yet carrying a sense of calm that came after her suspicions had been confirmed. "It seems it's true..."
Jiang Cheng's transformation happened overnight.
Considering the cigarette butt in the flowerpot, it's only possible that he dreamed about something.
Pei Xi thought that she must not be the only one in the world who dreams.
If she can do it, then there must be others who can do it too.
This makes perfect sense.
"How did you know..." Jiang Cheng took a long time to find his voice.
“What if I told you that I also had that dream?” Pei Xi asked, looking into his eyes.
