"I'll do it. You're not strong enough, don't tire yourself out." Fu Yucheng picked up the hammer and shoved an empty plate into Yun Tangyin's hand. "You fill it, I'll smash it."
He cracked open a plump walnut and put it in her mouth, saying, "Try it, the kernel is really plump."
Yun Tangyin chuckled as she chewed on a walnut, "It's better than the last one I bought. By the way, the security cameras are being installed tomorrow. Should we tell Old Zhang beforehand and ask him to keep an eye on things?"
Fu Yucheng smashed another one: "No need to say anything special, Uncle Zhang is always very thoughtful. As for you, don't get up too early tomorrow morning, just leave the egg collection to me."
He shoveled walnuts onto the plate, saying, "Eat more, and I'll send some to Aunt Li tomorrow too."
Just then, there was a knock on the door outside the courtyard.
Fu Yucheng wiped his hands and went to open the door. He saw Director Wang holding a cloth bag: "I just got this cotton from the logistics department. It's for making cotton-padded jackets for military families. Your husband is good at handicrafts, so help him divide it up."
Yun Tangyin quickly stuffed a handful of walnuts into Director Wang's hand: "They were just cracked open, please try them. This cotton is so white, the cotton-padded coats made from it will definitely be warm."
Director Wang weighed the walnuts in his hand: "My wife has been complaining of back pain lately, so these are a good way to help her recover. By the way, the guy installing the security cameras said he needs to borrow a ladder, do you have one?"
Fu Yucheng pointed to the woodshed: "There's a bamboo ladder here, I'll go get it now."
He carried the ladder out, "Send it directly to the gatehouse tomorrow morning?"
"No need, the worker will be here at seven o'clock, we can move it then." Director Wang took the ladder. "You guys should get some rest, we'll be busy tomorrow morning."
After seeing Director Wang off, Yun Tangyin spread cotton quilts on the bed: "Put this thick quilt on, it's cold at night."
She shoved a hot water bottle into Fu Yucheng's arms, saying, "Sleep with this, it'll keep you warm."
Fu Yucheng pushed the hot water bottle towards her: "You're pregnant, you should keep warm."
He suddenly remembered something, "We're installing security cameras tomorrow, should we ask the installer to install one here too?"
Yun Tangyin shook her head: "No need, there's one at the front gate, why would we need to install that in the house?"
She shoved a walnut into his hand. "Eat it quickly, then go to sleep."
The next morning, Fu Yucheng had just finished washing up when he heard footsteps outside the courtyard.
Peeking through the crack in the door, he saw Zhou Desheng: "Brother Fu, the guy installing the security cameras is here. Want to go take a look?"
"Coming right now." Fu Yucheng turned and called to Yun Tangyin, "Are you coming?"
Yun Tangyin was adding water to the pot: "I'm not going. I'll cook some porridge and wait for you to come back to eat."
She slipped a steamed bun into his pocket, "To have some on the way."
Fu Yucheng followed Zhou Desheng to the gate and saw two craftsmen installing iron boxes on the wall.
Old Zhang, holding up a wrench to help, asked, "Can this thing really keep an eye on people?"
The technician adjusted the camera: "Yes, it works. You can see it at night, but it's black and white."
He pointed towards the warehouse, "Once it's installed over there, we'll go test the main unit. You can watch it from the guardhouse."
Aunt Li, holding her child, came closer and said, "This is so advanced. From now on, anyone who tries to steal something will be watched."
Fu Yucheng looked at it and asked, "Master, how many days' worth of footage can this surveillance camera store?"
"Save for three days," the technician said, wrapping tape around the line. "It will automatically overwrite after three days. If there's any problem, just record it in advance."
Back home, Yun Tangyin was setting a bowl of porridge on the table: "Eat quickly, the porridge is freshly cooked."
She poked an egg into his bowl, saying, "It's fresh from when I got it."
Fu Yucheng, sipping his porridge, said, "The surveillance cameras were installed pretty quickly; the technician said they'd be ready by noon. By the way, Director Wang asked us to pick up the cotton this afternoon; are you going?"
Yun Tangyin added a spoonful of pickled vegetables to his bowl: "Go, and while you're at it, take the cloth cover to the patrol team. By the way, are you going to the regimental headquarters this afternoon?"
“Go, the regimental commander said there’s a new mission.” Fu Yucheng put down his bowl. “I’ll go return the ladder first, then go to the regimental headquarters.”
In the afternoon, Yun Tangyin carried the cloth cover to the patrol post and saw Xiao Li hammering nails into the wall.
Seeing her come over, he smiled and said, "Sister-in-law, this cloth cover is really nice, much better than the dishcloths in the cafeteria."
Yun Tangyin shoved an egg into his hand: "Just got it, here, have some. Is the surveillance camera working?"
“It’s working now,” Xiao Li pointed to the guard room. “Uncle Zhang is watching it and says he can see people clearly at the gate.”
Yun Tangyin asked, "By the way, the logistics department is distributing cotton. Has your sister-in-law gone to collect it yet?"
"Not yet, she's at home taking care of the kids." Xiao Li looked into the distance. "I'll go after I get off work, and I'll bring you some too?"
"No need, I can go by myself." Yun Tangyin glanced into the guard post. "The stove needs coal, I'll go to the boiler room to get it for you."
"Don't trouble yourself, sister-in-law, I can go by myself." Xiao Li stopped her, "You're pregnant, don't go back and forth."
Yun Tangyin smiled and nodded: "Okay, I'll go get the cotton."
Inside the family committee, Director Wang was distributing cotton to the military spouses.
Seeing Yun Tangyin come in, he smiled and called out, "Come here quickly, I saved the best for you, it's very clean."
Yun Tangyin took the cotton and stuffed it into the cloth bag: "Thank you, Director Wang. By the way, I heard they're going to pave the compound with cement?"
“Yes, construction will begin next week,” Director Wang said, slipping a pair of insoles into her hand. “They were just made; here you can use them.”
She pointed out the window, "Look, the children are playing on the playground again, it's so lively."
Yun Tangyin looked out the window and saw several children playing shuttlecock. She smiled and said, "It's better this way, it's lively and fun."
He slipped a cloth bag into Director Wang's hand. "These are freshly made insoles for you."
"Your craftsmanship is truly exquisite." Director Wang smiled as he touched the insole. "After the baby is born, I'll make a tiger-head shoe for him."
As soon as Yun Tangyin arrived home in the evening, she saw Fu Yucheng carrying a paper bag back.
