Chapter 2 The Mysterious Mr. X
"Sister Xu, what's wrong? Why are you reacting like a thief?" Lu Xiaomeng returned to the control tower empty-handed, still feeling a bit aggrieved.
My coffee!
"Oh, I just remembered something important I haven't done yet. I'll treat you to coffee next time." Xu Songning turned and left.
She recalled the man's retreating figure, and cold sweat beaded on her forehead.
I just saw his back...
That night, the lights were off, only half a curtain was left open, and the faint moonlight fell on the person.
His well-proportioned muscles and strong arms supported her steadily. Her fingernails left marks on his back, but he didn't care.
When she was moved, the corners of her eyes were tinged with moonlight.
Suddenly turning his head, I saw his clearly defined jawline and thin, sensual lips, but the upper half of his face was hidden in darkness, except for his eyes, which shone brightly.
The man didn't make much noise, only occasionally whispering a low, husky breath in her ear, which was incredibly sexy.
She didn't remember much about that night; she had been drinking and was already a little tipsy.
...
"Xu Songning, what are you thinking?!" She tapped her forehead in frustration. What could a mere glimpse of someone's back possibly tell her?
The other party didn't even stay overnight; he left sometime in the middle of the night and never thought of contacting her again or asking for her contact information. She even wondered if the other party was really the same captain from earlier.
Half a month later, Xu Songning realized that he must have been obsessed, otherwise why would he have fantasies about a man who had a one-night stand and left in the middle of the night, and compare him to a real person?
They are clearly two different people.
A cool breeze blew in through the open airport passageway, sweeping past and calming Xu Songning's restless heart.
"It must be ovulation time."
Night shifts are always boring. There aren't many flights at night, and the wind gradually subsides, but she still remains cautious.
Above the blue sky, safety rests in the hands of the captain; below the blue sky, the lives of the crew and passengers rest in the hands of the air traffic controllers.
I never dared to slack off in the slightest, always proceeding with utmost caution and trepidation.
When the replacement arrived, Xu Songning finished his night shift and was finally able to go home and rest.
The leader asked in the group chat who could cover shifts during the Chinese New Year holiday. It was a voluntary application process, and if no one could volunteer, they would have to draw lots.
The "Blue Sky Guides" group was filled with sighs and lamentations.
"Why is Mediterranean like this? Can't he just come and cover my shift for one day?"
"Xiao Jin, I support you. Go and talk to the leader."
In the small group, the leader is affectionately called "Mediterranean". Mediterranean people are pretty good. They will help them with any small matters and will not deliberately make things difficult for them. They often pay for coffee and takeout for them, and give each person ten packets of pangdahai (a type of herbal medicine) to soak in water to drink during the Spring Festival and holidays, which is commonly known as health preservation.
"If I tell them, I won't get any coffee next time, so I'm not going."
"I worked the night shift during the Chinese New Year."
Xu Songning suddenly popped up in the group chat, startling everyone into silence.
In the group, Xu Songning is considered a senior member of the Shanghai police force. There are several other members of the Shanghai police force who are older than her, but because they all have families and children and don't have time to interact with the younger members, they haven't been added to this small group.
“Sister Xu, you were on duty last year, so let’s do it this year! Oh well, let’s just draw lots. Whoever draws the lot gets to go. It’s all the same.”
"Xiao Jin is right, we should take turns."
"I've reported it to the Mediterranean. You guys figure out the rest yourselves." After sending this message, Xu Songning ignored the messages in the group and prepared to go home.
The apartment she rents is close to the airport, and she can occasionally see flight attendants and captains in uniform.
Xu Songning felt uneasy when he saw the captain's uniform, and just hoped that he would not run into that person again.
The apartment building has two units per floor. It seems like the people across the hall have moved out and no one has lived there for a long time, but today I was surprised to see a pair of men's leather shoes placed at the door.
Perhaps a new tenant has moved in.
Xu Songning didn't mind. She changed into fluffy slippers and hung her coat on the hanger. The coat suited her very well, and her colleagues had complimented her several times that day.
The entire house is decorated in black and white tones, giving it a cold and unapproachable feel, which suits the house's owner, Xu Songning, very well.
The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a wide view, but the sky outside was overcast, and strong winds howled from time to time. When she saw planes soaring through the clouds, she thought of a certain Air China plane.
To stop herself from overthinking, she decided to make breakfast.
I fried an egg in an electric cooker, added water and seasonings, sprinkled on a layer of tender green scallions, and served it as a fragrant soup base.
The noodles were bubbling and rolling in the pot. She stared blankly out the window. After staying up all night, it would be a lie to say she wasn't tired; her eyelids felt like they weighed a ton.
Just as she was about to fall asleep leaning against the wall, the phone rang.
"Hello."
Her voice was a little hoarse as she turned off the heat and picked out the soft noodles.
"Miss Xu, where did you go having fun yesterday?"
A teasing female voice came from the other end of the phone, along with the clinking of wine glasses.
"Boss Zhou, you're still not done? I've been working all night." Xu Songning placed the noodles on the table, casually picked at them with his chopsticks, and let the steam rise.
"I'm going to call it a day and take a break, but I have some good news for you~"
The other person's voice was practically flying off into the distance, and Xu Songning instinctively felt that this wasn't a good thing.
"What news?"
“I heard from the part-time girl on duty the other day that a tall, handsome man came over and asked—” Zhou Qiao raised her voice, trying to sound profound, “Does anyone know Miss L? It seems like he came over to deliberately inquire about her. The girl didn’t know anything and didn’t say much, just told me. I didn’t remember either, but I remembered the party when I was calculating the income from that day. You have an English name called Lili to me, oh~ it’s you, Miss L~”
"Cough cough cough!" A mouthful of noodles almost killed Xu Songning.
She coughed until her face turned bright red; just what I feared most had happened.
Two weeks ago, at a masquerade party held at Zhou Qiao's bar, she exchanged information with that handsome-looking man.
At cocktail parties, people implicitly refrain from revealing their true information, instead fabricating all sorts of outlandish and bizarre stories.
The man said his name was X.
Xu Songning smiled and shook hands with him, "Hello, Mr. X, I am Ms. L, you can also call me Lili."
"What does he want from me?" Xu Songning asked.
"What else could it be? Of course, it's because you've fallen for Miss L! You looked absolutely stunning that day, darling! You were completely different from your usual self. Even with a mask on, you were still the most dazzling presence."
Zhou Qiao was practically kissing the phone screen twice, as if she were the one who was completely infatuated.
"Did things go smoothly between you two that day?" Zhou Qiao asked with a gossipy smile. Xu Songning was a close friend of hers, so these things were naturally something she could share.
“There’s been some progress,” Xu Songning added, “but I have no intention of continuing this.” Besides, he left in the middle of the night, something she would never mention! How embarrassing! What had she done to displease him? He was clearly having a good time too.
"Wow~ What a heartless woman, but I think he's fallen for her." Zhou Qiao held a piece of paper between her fingers, smiling as she smoothed it out on the bar. "Mr. X left you his contact information, baby, do you want it?"
