Chapter 33 Ms. Xu Returns to China
"No way, I promised to treat you to dinner after my March vacation, you can choose the place," Xu Songning said with a smile.
"Okay." Xiang Yun smiled and looked down to continue replying to messages.
Lu Xiaomeng leaned close to Xu Songning's ear and whispered, "Something's up~ What's this about inviting you to dinner?"
"It's about Sanhua." Xu Songning's voice was neither too loud nor too soft, and Xiang Yun, who was sitting opposite them, heard it and handed the phone to them.
The screen prominently displayed a lively calico cat. When she was first found, she was covered in fallen leaves, but after being cleaned up, she was a stunning beauty in the feline world. Xiang Yun had sent Xu Songning many photos, but none were as captivating as this video.
Sanhua walked around the hospital, her injured foot touching the ground. She was no longer limping and walked much more normally. She looked lively and energetic, sometimes shaking her cat and sometimes playing with a fur ball.
"They're so cute! I want to have one!" Lu Xiaomeng was completely charmed, but because her mother was allergic to cat fur, she could only look on longingly.
"Isn't Auntie allergic to cat hair?" Xiang Yun put down his phone.
Xu Songning was somewhat surprised; she had only mentioned it casually, but she hadn't expected Xiang Yun to remember it.
“Yes, if you’re planning to find a home, I can help post it on my WeChat Moments. I saw someone say they wanted to adopt a cat before.” Lu Xiaomeng scrolled through her WeChat Moments. She had added so many people that the messages were endless, and she couldn’t even remember who it was that wanted to adopt a cat.
"The captain is no good."
"No captain."
The two spoke in unison, their eyes meeting in the air, then both looked away as if burned.
Lu Xiaomeng glanced at Xu Songning sitting next to her, who was trying to cover up her actions by flipping through her phone. She looked at Xiang Yun across from her, lowered her head to "reply" to a message, smiled to herself, and chuckled to herself.
"Alright, I know what you're looking for. The captain definitely doesn't have time to take care of the cat. I think most of us single guys in this line of work probably don't have the time either. How about we find someone outside the industry or a colleague with a family?"
"good."
"Can."
They replied almost simultaneously.
Lu Xiaomeng clicked her tongue in amazement, "What great chemistry! I shouldn't be sitting here, I seem to be very bright. Sister Xu, look at me, don't I look like a big light bulb?"
Just as their number was called, Xu Songning was about to get up when someone else left their seat first.
"I'll go get it," Xiang Yun said.
Xu Songning poked Lu Xiaomeng's head with his finger, "You big light bulb, turn on the light."
"Let's go, let's go." Lu Xiaomeng laughed and leaned on her shoulder. She glanced back and saw Xiang Yun's back. She whispered, "Sister Xu, will Captain Song cause you trouble? Judging from his appearance today, he doesn't seem like he'll let this go."
"So what can he do? File a complaint against me? How naive." Xu Songning didn't care.
The meal was eaten quickly, as Xu Songning had to rush to work. She touched up her light nude lipstick and smiled at the two of them, "Thank you both for eating this unhealthy meal with me today. I'll treat you to something better next time."
"Hmm?" Xiang Yun looked at her.
“Brother Yun can eat twice.” Xu Songning made a gesture, with a relaxed and outgoing expression.
"No rush, take your time." Xiang Yun said, as if he were talking about eating, but also as if he were talking about their relationship.
In short, Xu Songning understood, blinked, and left.
Xu Songning left, and Lu Xiaomeng immediately said goodbye, "Captain Xiang, I'm going home now!"
“You…” Xiang Yun hesitated for a few seconds, his brows furrowing as if he was conflicted. He was afraid of causing trouble, but Lu Xiaomeng was Xu Songning’s friend. “Which way are you going? I can give you a ride if it’s on my way.”
“It’s not on my way. You can stay across from Sister Xu. We’re really not going in the same direction. Captain Xiang, you should go back and rest early.” Lu Xiaomeng waved goodbye.
Xiang Yun's slightly conflicted expression relaxed, and her brows unfurrowed. "Okay, goodbye."
After walking a few steps, Xiaomeng remembered something, turned around, saw Xiang Yun was still in the same spot, walked over and whispered, "Captain Xiang, did you know that Sister Xu's birthday is coming up soon?"
The wind blew and the cold passed, the calendar turned two pages in the midst of busy work, the roaring A350 landed at the airport, and Xu Songning waited for Ms. Xu at the exit.
It's been almost a year since the mother and daughter last saw each other.
Amidst the bustling crowd, Ms. Xu wore a small silk scarf, a country-style hat, and a well-tailored, brightly colored dress that made her look several years younger.
The mother and daughter spotted each other immediately through the crowd.
"My goodness!" Ms. Xu smiled and walked over with small steps, hugging Xu Songning tightly.
"Mom, welcome back to Shanghai." Xu Songning patted her mother on the back. She was wearing a shirt and trousers with an overcoat over them. Although the clothes were uniformly distributed, the shirt and trousers looked tailor-made on her.
Ms. Xu hugged her daughter, her gaze gently sweeping over her face. She turned her around a few times, examining her carefully from head to toe, and sighed, "Another year has passed. My daughter has grown up so much. Is work hard?"
"Work is fine. Aren't you going on vacation soon? You can relax for a few days." Xu Songning took her mother's luggage and led her to the garage to get the car.
After not seeing each other for so long, even between blood relatives, there was a slight awkwardness. Fortunately, Ms. Xu was cheerful. Along the way, Ms. Xu asked questions and Xu Songning answered. They talked about everything from professional topics to life, and the thin ice between them gradually melted away. When they arrived at the garage, Ms. Xu helped carry the suitcase.
"Goodness, be gentle with your suitcase, it's full of local specialties, I'm afraid it will get crushed."
"Okay." Xu Songning picked up the suitcase; thankfully it wasn't too heavy, and she placed it steadily in the trunk. She had to go to work, so she gave the car keys to Ms. Xu.
"Mom, you drive my car home first, I still have two shifts to go."
"Then how did you get back? Did your mother come to pick you up?" Ms. Xu asked.
"No need, my... colleague is going that way anyway, he'll give me a ride back." Xu Songning touched her nose and blinked rapidly.
Ms. Xu was quite surprised. Thinking of the colleague she had mentioned having a crush on, she smiled and said, "Is it that colleague? Since we're going to trouble him, let him come over for a meal. Mom will cook for you herself and make sure he doesn't embarrass you."
“Okay.” Xu Songning pondered. Xiang Yun lived right across the street, and her mother lived with her. The two would run into each other sooner or later. If she didn’t introduce them, it would be impolite of her not to.
Ms. Xu hugged her happily, "Does he have any dietary restrictions? Mom is going to buy groceries."
"He doesn't drink alcohol, Mom. You can just buy some refreshing drinks, or a few oranges. We have a juicer at home; freshly squeezed juice tastes even better. As for vegetables, he doesn't eat cilantro or houttuynia cordata, and his spiciness is about the same as mine." Xu Songning listed them one by one, raising an eyebrow involuntarily. She was surprised that she remembered Xiang Yun's preferences so clearly.
Ms. Xu, with a knowing look on her face, patted her hand with a smile, "Sweetie, you've taken a liking to him. What about him? Do you think he likes you?"
