Chapter 70 Let Me Explain

Chapter 70 Let Me Explain

Time seemed to stand still.

No one spoke first.

They weren't doing anything wrong; their eyes were just meeting, their distance exceeded social distancing, and their lips and noses were just centimeters apart.

"Wow!" Ms. Xu suddenly clapped her hands, breaking the silence.

Xiang Yun and Xu Songning quickly distanced themselves. Xu Songning stood up guiltily, "Mom, let me explain..."

"I forgot to buy groceries, I'll go buy them first!" Ms. Xu said seriously, and turned to leave.

Xiang Yun was nervously fidgeting with her fingers, but when she heard Ms. Xu say she was going to buy groceries, she had a sudden thought and didn't give her a chance to leave.

"Auntie, the vegetable shop is closed."

Someone cast a spell, and time stood still once again.

"Then what should I do to keep myself occupied?" Ms. Xu asked, startled.

With her left hand dragging a suitcase, she held a beautifully woven straw hat in her right.

With one foot inside the door and the other still in the hallway, she wished she had never opened that door and should have stayed at her old friend's house a few more days.

Meow~

Sanhua walked gracefully to Ms. Xu's side, looking at this unfamiliar human with curiosity.

"Mom, come in quickly, what are you doing?" Xu Songning stepped forward and took Xu's suitcase. Her heart was pounding and she hadn't calmed down yet. She explained in a low voice, "I bumped my nose, and Brother Yun was just taking a look. It's not what you think!"

"How did you bump your nose?" Ms. Xu didn't keep her voice down, and Xiang Yun on the sofa heard her too.

He was about to explain when Xu Songning, fearing he might say something outrageous, like she bumped into his chest and made his nose red, quickly said, "I bumped into a wall!"

Ms. Xu looked at her with an expression that seemed to say, "Do you think your mother is stupid?"

Xu Songning avoided the gaze and picked up Sanhua, the one who brought the atmosphere, saying, "Mom, look, your little granddaughter."

"Meow~" Sanhua meowed in agreement.

The soft, sweet voice immediately won over Ms. Xu, who took Sanhua from her arms. "Oh my, this little one is so cute! When are you going to give me a real granddaughter?"

"Mom!" Xu Songning glanced at Xiang Yun, then gave her mother a gentle glare, the meaning of which was obvious. "I'm not even married yet, so don't worry about me."

"Oh dear, what else is there for Mom to worry about? I'm only worried about you, aren't I?" Ms. Xu said cheerfully as she changed her shoes and turned to Xiang Yun, "Little Xiang, you just got back from outside?"

The tone was so warm and familiar, like that of a mother, that Xu Songning was momentarily dazed.

Not to mention Xiang Yun, who had just been standing in the cold wind, thinking that he really didn't feel a sense of belonging in Shanghai, when he ran into Xu Songning, and then, in an awkward moment, he bumped into Ms. Xu on her way home.

The awkward situation was eased by Ms. Xu's caring words.

“Yes, Auntie. You just got back too?” Xiang Yun stepped forward, helped take the luggage, and naturally pushed it onto the balcony.

Ms. Xu exchanged an approving glance with Xu Songning, who then covered his forehead, feeling a headache coming on.

"Yes, I was visiting an old friend these past few days, and when I found out I had a granddaughter, I rushed back to take care of her," Ms. Xu said with a smile.

Xu Songning went to the kitchen to pour her some water, and also poured a glass for Xiang Yun, since he had been in there for so long and she hadn't had a chance to pour him any water yet.

The sofa in the living room is an L-shaped soft sofa. Ms. Xu sat on the short sofa at the corner, while Xiang Yun sat on the long sofa, rubbing his fingers. It seemed as if the positions of the host and guest had been reversed.

"Ningning said that you two picked up this cat together?" Ms. Xu stroked the back of the calico cat, which nestled obediently in her arms, letting her rub it like a good baby, as if the mess in the rest of the living room hadn't been caused by it.

"Sort of. Neither of us has time to take care of it. Songning found it a home, but she won't be available until next month. We'll have to trouble you to take care of it for a while. I'll provide plenty of cat treats and snacks," Xiang Yun said.

Ms. Xu smiled at him and said, "Then my little granddaughter is considered yours?"

That's a very ambiguous statement.

Xiang Yun hesitated to speak for a moment, but Xu Songning came over and helped him out.

"Mom, what nonsense are you talking about again? Have some water." Xu Songning sat between the two of them, placed a glass of water in front of them, and turned on the TV to add some noise.

“I am Sanhua’s mother, and Yun Ge is Sanhua’s brother.” Xu Songning casually stroked a cat’s fur as well.

Ms. Xu bent over, laughing so hard she couldn't stop. "You guys... you're all talking about your own generation? Isn't that a generational gap?"

“We young people are like this, you’re a middle-aged or elderly person, you wouldn’t understand,” Xu Songning replied domineeringly, randomly pressing a channel. It was showing a prime-time drama, the kind of show his mother would love.

Xiang Yun was torn between leaving and sitting, feeling restless and uneasy. He rubbed his hands together, interlaced his fingers on his knees, dressed in casual clothes, sitting upright with his back ramrod straight.

What excuse should I use to leave?

Xu Songning was on the left side of the long sofa, and the right side was against the wall, with a cat bed blocking the way out.

If he wants to go out, he has to go through Xu Songning and Ms. Xu.

...Never mind, I'll sit for a while longer.

He took a sip of water to moisten his throat and then perked up to watch TV.

The three of them tacitly fell silent. Ms. Xu wanted to speak, but Xu Songning placed his hand on her leg and pressed it firmly, signaling her not to say anything more!

So, all six eyes were fixed on the television.

The TV series is titled "Lost".

Good, at least it looks like a suspense drama, and there won't be any scenes of the main characters kissing inexplicably.

If the lights were off and Xu Songning were watching a romantic movie alone with Xiang Yun, she might have the leisure to flirt with him.

However, at this moment, there were three people sitting in front of the TV, and no one hoped more than Xu Songning that the TV station was broadcasting a serious drama!

On the television, a woman, her face streaked with tears, walked awkwardly through the rainy night, holding an umbrella, her right hand clasped in front of her chest.

A murder on a rainy night? Xu Songning is looking forward to it.

The camera zooms in, revealing a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes in her arms.

Xu Songning's lips twitched.

The woman fell to the ground, desperately protecting the child in her arms, who cried loudly.

The umbrella broke, and she threw it aside.

Xu Songning thought, given the current atmosphere, the murderer should be coming out by now.

The sound of hurried footsteps came from behind the woman, and a pair of feet walked quickly towards her, following the camera.

"The rhythm is right!" Xu Songning clenched his fist and breathed a sigh of relief.

"Who are you trying to impress by degrading yourself? Do you think any man would even glance at you?" A mature female voice pierced the rainy night.

Oh wow.

The middle-aged woman rushed up to the young woman, grabbed her, and demanded, "Who's the father of the child? Tell me!"

"Who is the child's father? Tell me!"

Ms. Xu picked up Sanhua and solemnly recited lines from a TV drama.
