Chapter 49 Wild Goats
On their way back, Jinran and Grandma Shen heard Grandma Shen talk about Zhang the Cripple's family.
"Zhang Lan is a good girl, but she has bad luck. Her mother died early, her father is clumsy, and her brother is unable to stand up for himself. But fortunately, she is a strong-willed woman who has taken charge of the family."
Jinran also felt a little sad, but a girl like that would live a good life no matter what situation she was in.
Grandma Shen continued, "I never thought it was wrong for a woman to be shrewish, but she had to be shrewish in a reasonable way and not just make trouble. Nini, life is already hard for women. You have to fight for your own survival. Either you have to win over your husband's heart, or you have to be rich and have your husband's family and your own family in your favor. Otherwise, life will be tough. But Nini, I've lived most of my life and I've only figured out one thing: you can't rely on anyone. Relying on others will eventually collapse. You have to be strong yourself."
Jinran knew that Grandma Shen was teaching her, wanting to tell her about the losses she had suffered, the grievances she had endured, and the detours she had taken.
Jinran tentatively asked, "Grandma, what do you think about Sister Yanhong's matter?"
"Nini, what do you think?"
Jinran thought for a moment and said, "I just think it's stupid."
Grandma Chen smiled, and after a long while said, "How foolish! The real trouble is yet to come. That educated youth Meng is no kind person."
They chatted idly along the way, and the distance didn't seem too far. Once home, Jinran put the piglets in the pigpen, which still had some feed left. Grandpa Chen decided to cover both the chicken coop and the pigpen.
Grandpa Shen is wise and mighty!
The chicks were put into the chicken coop, and Jinran fed the new family members with the feed she had prepared beforehand.
Dou Jinye is back. It's a big dog now. Because it drank seawater for a long time, its fur is like silk, and it looks very majestic when it runs.
Every time the villagers see it, they marvel at how well Jinran raises animals.
"Woof woof~" Master, what is this? Is it ours?
Jinran nodded, then said in a sinister tone, "These are all to be killed and eaten because they do no work all day, all they do is sleep and go out to play. There's no use keeping them."
"Woof woof~~ Woof woof~~" Master, I'll be guarding the house and door tomorrow, I'm going to be very useful.
Jinran smiled and patted Doujin, "You're a good boy!"
"Meow~~ Meow~~" I'll go up the mountain for a stroll too, and see if I can bring you anything good.
Jinran nodded in agreement.
This is truly a mother's good eldest daughter.
After that, whenever Jinran had free time, she would store pig feed in her spatial storage. She would then cook the pig feed with some coarse grains and feed it to the piglets. The chicks were much easier to raise; they could eat any coarse grains without cooking them, and they were very easy to raise.
Watching them eat with such relish, Jinran's mouth watered as well.
Jinran was afraid they would get sick, so she would occasionally add a little diluted seawater. In less than a month, they grew much larger.
Grandma Shen praised the pig after seeing it, saying, "You've raised this pig very well. It looks like it will grow to over 200 jin (100 kg). Your family will really have a prosperous New Year then."
"Only two hundred? That won't do. We need to raise one that weighs four hundred jin, then we can all have a prosperous New Year together."
Grandma Shen laughed at Jinran for being greedy, "Nini, two hundred pounds is already amazing, four hundred pounds? Then you'll be a model worker."
Jinran confidently clenched her paws.
Who told her to have cheat codes!
"Grandma, Dad sent a letter saying he can come home for two days tomorrow because he has a holiday. I'll cook something nice for you and Grandpa, so don't forget to come too, and Da Nan and the others too."
Grandma Shen waved her hand and said no need. Jinran hugged her arm and said coquettishly, "Grandma, if you don't come, I'll take the things to you to make them. Then my eldest aunt will definitely say something sarcastic, and my second aunt won't be happy either. It'll be troublesome. Please come."
In the end, Grandma Shen couldn't persuade Jinran any further and agreed.
After Grandma Shen passed away, Jinran planned to go up the mountain to gather wool, to see what she could buy to nourish her parents. She wondered if her brothers would be able to come back.
Upon reaching the deep mountains, Jinran was lucky enough to spot a herd of wild goats grazing. She took out her newly acquired treasure—a tranquilizer pistol—and mentally prepared herself for the challenge.
Jinran fired a shot at the nearest wild goat. Terrified, Jinran immediately entered her spatial dimension.
I was so scared! So scared!!!
"Meow~~"
The remaining wild goats were frightened and scattered and began to run.
She figured it was about time; if she waited any longer, the wild goat might wake up, which would be awkward.
Upon exiting the space, one sees a very fat wild goat lying quietly on the ground, with no other animals around.
Jinran took out the stun gun and gave the wild goat a good thrashing. Then she put it into her spatial storage.
