Chapter 22 (Part 1) Meeting an Old Friend Again
"I never expected we'd meet under these circumstances. I thought we'd meet in a different way. Is this fate playing tricks on us, or..." Wei Lan sat at the table, squinting at the person opposite him, "...someone has ulterior motives?"
The person opposite chuckled softly, the corners of their beautiful lips curving upwards slightly: "What a pity... I don't quite understand what you mean."
Upon hearing this, Wei Lan couldn't help but smile. He waved to his subordinate behind him, "You can go now. I have something to discuss with Miss Peggy." The subordinate hesitated for a moment, then nodded and withdrew.
Ms. Peggy across from him nodded approvingly: "Mr. Wei truly lives up to his reputation as Boss Xu's most trusted confidant. Under your meticulous management, your company is thriving."
Twenty years ago, the title "Boss Xu" was a name that resonated throughout both the underworld and legitimate society of New York, said to be enough to terrify even the most nagging child. Indeed, this "Boss Xu" was none other than Xu Qingjue, the current head of Longming. Of course, due to health reasons, Xu Qingjue is no longer in charge, and his eldest son, Xu Qi, has taken over.
Logically, after Qiangwei left, Wei Lan should have been Xu Qi's most trusted subordinate, a consensus shared by everyone in Longming. Unexpectedly, this Miss Peggy made a startling statement, claiming that Wei Lan was Xu Qi's true confidant. The truth of this is unknown, but if Xu Qi were to learn of it, it would undoubtedly create a rift between him and Wei Lan. Throughout history, in any powerful organization, the idea of a servant serving two masters is a taboo subject, an area that must never be crossed.
Upon hearing this startling statement, Wei Lan showed no surprise whatsoever. Instead, he gently pushed up his glasses and smiled humbly: "I am deeply honored by Miss Peggy's kind words. Long Ming's current status in New York is entirely due to the abilities and talents of Mr. Xu and the young master. I dare not take any credit for myself."
“What a loyal family dog,” Peggy praised again, but her eyes were cold. “I’m actually looking forward to the wonderful scene of this loyal dog going berserk.”
Wearing a bright red silk cheongsam that perfectly accentuated her graceful figure, a vibrant rose blooming on her chest, paired with her exquisitely beautiful face, the woman before him was breathtakingly beautiful and captivating. However, Wei Lan recognized her true identity the moment he saw her—having worked with the same person for fifteen years, if he couldn't immediately recognize her from her disguises, then he, Wei Lan, might as well give up. Hearing the sharp sarcasm from her, he remained unperturbed, continuing to laugh: "Hehe, I, Wei, have always been fond of helping others achieve their goals; perhaps soon your wish will be fulfilled."
"I hope you won't disappoint me." Upon hearing this, Peggy turned her head and returned a bright smile.
"Speaking of which, several months have passed since we last parted. I wonder if you've missed me..." Wei Lan slowly stood up, and in a flash, she was already standing in front of "Peggy." She pinched his chin with two fingers and lifted it slightly, meeting his beautiful cat-like eyes. "Beautiful...Mr. Rose?"
"I'm sorry, there is no one named 'Rose' here." The beautiful woman called Rose skillfully avoided the man's flirtatious fingers, a meaningful smile on her face. "But it doesn't matter, a name is just a label after all. I'm rather curious, last time you returned empty-handed, I wonder if your master was disappointed by that?"
Before he could finish speaking, he suddenly saw Wei Lan's eyes, which still held a warm smile, close without warning. When they opened again, the gentle and harmless expression on that refined and handsome face had completely disappeared, turning into a cold and cruel one that sent chills down one's spine.
“Oh…you’re here.” Peggy’s eyes flashed coldly, but the corners of his mouth turned up. “It wasn’t for nothing that I waited so long.” After finishing his business there, he rushed to New York. After confirming that everything was going according to plan, he waited quietly here for the other party to come to him. As expected, Wei Lan found the place soon. And so, for the first time, they sat at the same table in this capacity.
Wei Lan snorted lightly, flipped his hand, and a black pistol appeared in his palm. Then he looked at the other person with a provocative look in his eyes: "Enough nonsense, want to play a game?"
"You're still so belligerent. If I were Boss Xu, I definitely wouldn't need you." The beauty sighed, but still took the gun, slowly stood up, stared straight at the other person, and her whole aura changed instantly, like a sword about to be drawn.
