Chapter 32 Chu Saiying
In the afternoon, the sound of cicadas could be heard continuously outside the teaching building.
Students are always playing and fooling around in the corridors during breaks.
Lu Yanhe did not get up, but was organizing the notes he had hastily jotted down during class.
Li Pengfei suddenly walked up to Lu Yanhe and asked, "Lu Yanhe, did you cheat?"
Lu Yanhe looked up at him speechlessly, unsure of what to say: "..."
Li Pengfei looked puzzled: "Otherwise, how could you have made such great progress all of a sudden? I heard that you only got five words wrong in a quiz today, which is not normal."
Lu Yanhe grunted before saying, "Because I just recited it to myself last night."
Li Pengfei wore an expression of disbelief.
"Perfect?"
“Yes,” Lu Yanhe said. “I just finished memorizing the English vocabulary from the first semester of the first year of high school.”
Li Pengfei stared at Lu Yanhe with a strange expression.
After a few seconds, he said, "Okay, then you're lucky."
Lu Yanhe hummed in agreement.
“I made another bet with Chen Qin,” Li Pengfei suddenly said.
"What bet did you make?"
“I’m betting on who will beat whom next time,” Li Pengfei said. “I wasn’t planning on betting, but what he said really got on my nerves. Why is it that you’ve been skipping class for so long and you can improve so much with just a little effort, while I can’t? I want to see if I can surpass you.”
Lu Yanhe: "Whatever."
Li Pengfei glared at Lu Yanhe: "You don't believe I can surpass you?"
Lu Yanhe glanced at Li Pengfei helplessly and said, "Why do you think you can surpass me?"
Li Pengfei looked at Lu Yanhe.
Lu Yanhe looked at Li Pengfei.
The two stared at each other, wide-eyed.
One second.
Two seconds.
Li Pengfei suddenly snapped out of his petrified state. He nimbly took a step back in the narrow aisle between the desks and pointed at Lu Yanhe in an exaggerated manner.
"Damn it! You're so arrogant! You've successfully angered me!"
Lu Yanhe didn't know what to say.
In September, the classroom air was filled with the youthful energy unique to schools. The sunlight seemed fuller and brighter than elsewhere. The classroom was messy and didn't look tidy at all, but everyone's face radiated youthful energy.
Lu Yanhe said helplessly, "I wasn't being arrogant, Li Pengfei. I didn't want to compete with you, I just—"
“He’s just looking for another way to make a living, Li Pengfei.” A sharp, sarcastic voice suddenly appeared.
Lu Yanhe and Li Pengfei both looked at the person who had suddenly appeared with surprise.
Lu Yanhe found the information corresponding to the person in front of him in his memory.
Chu Saiying.
If Lu Yanhe had to describe his first impression of Chu Saiying in one sentence, he would say, "Isn't this just an Asian version of Draco Malfoy?" That's right, just like Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter movies.
Both the original owner's impression of Chu Saiying and Lu Yanhe's first impression of Chu Saiying fit the image of Malfoy.
A high school student had his hair combed into a slicked-back style, and his dark, shiny hair made Lu Yanhe wonder how much hairspray he had used.
Of course, the most crucial thing is that Chu Saiying's arrogant face has the same haughty expression as Malfoy.
Both being second-generation rich kids from wealthy families, Li Pengfei seemed like a landlord's son who suddenly became rich overnight compared to him. Chu Saiying exuded a refined air from head to toe, reflecting her excellent education and privileged upbringing, which made Lu Yanhe subconsciously feel that she was... pretentious.
After all, this wasn't some elite school; it was just an ordinary high school. At most, Li Pengfei would show off his newly bought designer clothes in class, but he never distinguished himself from his classmates and still played around with them.
Chu Saiying, however, believed that he and his classmates were not from the same world. He was arrogant and never participated in class activities. He only added a few classmates as friends. His reason was simple: "Anyway, I'll delete these people after graduating from high school, so why waste time adding them as friends now?"
Li Pengfei was one of the few people in the class whom Chu Saiying took seriously—in Chu Saiying's eyes, Li Pengfei's family belonged to the same social class as hers.
Li Pengfei looked at him in surprise and said, "You're back?"
Chu Saiying nodded: "That's right, I'm back."
He asked, "I'm surprised, why didn't you go to the interview?"
Li Pengfei gave a forced laugh and said, "What's the point of me going to an interview with my English level? I can't understand anything they're saying."
Chu Saiying: "As long as the sponsorship is sufficient, even if you only need to say 'Hello,' their school gates will open to you."
Li Pengfei: "So, which school did you knock on?"
Chu Saiying smiled slightly: "It's a pity that we only received invitations from a few Ivy League schools."
"Damn, Chu Saiying, did you get an invitation from an Ivy League university in the US?" someone immediately asked in an exaggerated voice, like a comedian trying to crack a joke.
Chu Saiying glanced at the person next to her and said, "Chen Pei, don't speak so loudly. It's not such a big deal."
Chen Pei: "Getting an invitation from an Ivy League university in the United States isn't impressive? You're being too modest!"
The United States still exists in this world, and the Ivy League universities still exist.
While everyone else is still working hard to prepare for the college entrance examination, some have already embarked on the path of studying abroad. This is not uncommon at this school; there are always a few students from wealthy families with connections and resources who, while everyone else is relentlessly battling the fierce college entrance examination and can only work like donkeys in circles, have already chosen a different path, no longer needing to compete with millions of others for that precarious little bridge.
Chu Saiying's sudden appearance attracted the attention of most of the students in the class.
He was immediately surrounded by other classmates who curiously inquired about the details of his trip to the Ivy League in the United States.
In this era, the world across the ocean is no longer gilded with myths like it was twenty years ago, but it is still another world, another way of life. For this group of students who live a repetitive life like a donkey pulling a millstone every day, it represents something new, beautiful, and dreamlike.
Taking advantage of the commotion, Lu Yanhe withdrew from the noise and left the classroom.
He put his hands in his pockets and walked toward the restroom.
Li Pengfei's voice suddenly caught up: "Are you really planning to seriously take the college entrance exam and go to university?"
Lu Yanhe nodded.
"Why didn't you talk to Chu Saiying more?" he asked.
Li Pengfei pursed his lips, looking impatient with Chu Saiying.
“We just don’t see eye to eye.” Li Pengfei, imitating Lu Yanhe, put his hands in his pockets and walked over to him. “Aren’t you taking the art exam?”
Lu Yanhe said, "Participating in the art exam is the same as taking the college entrance exam; you still need a score in the academic subjects."
“It wasn’t like I passed the exam casually. My dad even wanted me to pursue the arts entrance exam route,” Li Pengfei said.
