Crying Cat Corpse
In the early morning, Ye Jingan was awakened by a sharp cat meow. The meow was particularly harsh, as if it was declaring its sovereignty to its opponent. He climbed out of bed and went to the window to see if there were any cats fighting downstairs.
"Knock knock knock..." The knock on the door was very light. Before Ye Jingan could walk over to open the door, the door handle had been turned.
Qiu Zimu tiptoed in and saw someone standing by the bed. He was startled and whispered, "Ye Jing'an?"
"What are you doing sneaking into my room late at night?" Ye Jing'an asked.
"You haven't slept yet. Come on, follow me." Qiu Zimu said in a low voice.
Ye Jingan looked at him like a thief and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Shh! Speak a little more quietly. The crying cat corpse has come out. I can see it from the window of my room." Qiu Zimu said.
"Coming out?" Ye Jing'an followed Qiu Zimu quietly into the room, squatted by the window, and half of his head was exposed, looking downstairs.
The funeral customs here require that the lights be on during the seven nights the body is kept. With the help of the light, Ye Jingan saw the small bushes in the southeast corner moving.
Qiu Zimu told him that the crying cat corpse was right there. It seemed to have just caught a bird or some other small animal, and was probably hiding there to eat it.
"Did you see it clearly?" Ye Jing'an asked.
"It ran very fast. I only saw a humanoid monster. It must be the corpse of a crying cat." Qiu Zimu said.
Ye Jingan and Qiu Zimu stared at the bush without blinking. After a while, there was no movement in the bush.
"Run away? No! We need to know where its lair is." Qiu Zimu got up to get the poison jar, thinking of releasing a poisonous insect to chase it so as to find the hiding place of the crying cat corpse.
Ye Jingan hummed doubtfully and whispered, "Is it a person?"
"Who is it?" Qiu Zimu leaned over to the window. A head popped out from the bushes. It was a young man with half of his face covered in blood and gray-black hair. He was looking around vigilantly, and suddenly looked up in the direction of Ye Jingan and Qiu Zimu.
The two of them quickly ducked their heads and crouched against the wall. The man seemed quite perceptive, perhaps having heard their earlier whispered conversation and noticed them.
The two dared not move or speak at this moment. Ye Jingan turned on the camera on his phone and slowly extended the lens to where he could capture the bushes. In the phone screen, the bushes were no longer moving, and the head of the person just now was gone.
"Where did he go?" Qiu Zimu asked.
Ye Jingan put his phone away and looked around. Downstairs was quiet and there was nothing unusual. Ye Jingan whispered, "You said that person just now was a crying cat corpse? Why does he look like a madman or a pervert to me?"
Qiu Zimu was also a little uncertain at this moment.
Ye Jingan was startled, and suddenly asked, "Are all the windows on the first floor closed tightly? Aunt Li sleeps on the first floor."
"I don't know, but it's cool in the mountains, so we'll draw the screens and open the windows at night..." Qiu Zimu and Ye Jing'an hurried downstairs.
Aunt Li is afraid of heat, so her family did not buy an air conditioner to save money. She also keeps the windows wide open at night for ventilation and coolness.
The two rushed into the room, and the scene before them gave them a chill and a wave of fear. The man's head that had appeared in the bushes earlier was now standing by the window, staring at Aunt Li and licking the blood from the corner of his mouth.
"Fuck you!" Ye Jing'an picked up a wooden box and threw it at him.
The man moved quickly and disappeared in an instant. Ye Jingan slammed the window shut and locked it, saying to Qiu Zimu, "Close the windows in the other rooms quickly!"
Aunt Li was awakened by the loud noise. She didn't know what Ye Jing'an and Qiu Zimu were arguing about so late at night. She put on her shoes and walked out of the room, puzzled, "Xiao Ye, what happened?"
Fortunately, they stayed at Aunt Li's house for a few days and helped with the cleaning. They were familiar with the locations of the light switches and windows in each room. After quickly closing all the windows, they were already sweating on their backs.
"What are you doing?" Auntie walked out of the room and saw that the house was brightly lit, as bright as day.
"Auntie, the crying cat corpse just arrived." Qiu Zimu said.
"Ah?" She remembered correctly that the two children had just made a fuss in her room and seemed to be smashing something. Aunt Li almost fell to the ground. Thinking that the other two aunts probably didn't close the windows either, she hurriedly called them to remind them.
Ye Jing'an had previously suspected that it was a madman or a pervert, but now he was certain that it was the crying cat corpse, or some other monster, definitely not a normal person.
Before, he was upstairs and could only vaguely see the head of a man with blood on his face from a distance, but just now he saw it very clearly. The man's eyes were not human eyes, but yellow-green, and the pupils looked oval and stood in the middle of the whites of the eyes.
This monster was very fast, and no one knew where it had gone. Ye Jingan was worried that they hadn't closed the windows in time and that it would come in through another window, so he dragged Qiu Zimu to check each room one by one. They checked every room on the first floor where a person could hide, and after confirming that the windows were closed tightly, they breathed a sigh of relief.
If this monster really gets into the house, I really don't know how to deal with it. Fighting it won't be very effective, and it might even damage Aunt Li's furniture. It's better to let it stay outside. No matter how I think about it, it's just disgusting.
"What should we do now?" Qiu Zimu said, "I just released the Gu worm and went out to look for it, but I couldn't find it."
Ye Jingan was silent for a moment and said, "How good is his climbing ability? Our windows on the second floor are not closed."
"Well, it's not mentioned in the notes, but cats are quite good at climbing," said Qiu Zimu.
To be on the safe side, they decided to close all the windows. Aunt Li ran upstairs and pleaded, "Can you please help bring the two aunts who live next door home? They left their windows open just now and are scared to live alone."
"Okay, let's go now." Ye Jing'an said.
The two aunts were so scared that they dragged them all the way to Aunt Li's house. They sat on the sofa in the living room and chatted with Aunt Li, saying that they heard a cat's meow and saw something scurry past.
Aunt Li cleared out a room on the second floor for them to sleep in. But now that they were already awakened from their sleepiness, there was no way they could fall asleep. Fortunately, it was almost four o'clock, and they could wait a few hours for the sun to rise. The aunts gathered in the room to chat.
Ye Jingan frowned slightly as he leaned against the headboard. If he were to fight someone with fists and sticks, he could easily take on three or four people. But how would he fight a mutant monster he had never seen before?
"What are you staring at?" Qiu Zimu threw a bottle of drink at him. "You guys should have a lot of ways to fight monsters. You should be able to deal with it, right? Shall we go now?"
The things passed down by the Ye family's ancestors should be enough to defeat any ghosts, not just this mutant monster. The key problem is that he hasn't learned anything. He only knows one kind of spell related to ghosts and monsters, which he can draw to fight them. There are no ghosts these days, so it's unclear whether it will be effective. Besides, this monster is not a ghost.
"I'm asking you a question! Do you want to leave or not?" Qiu Zimu said.
Ye Jing'an came back to his senses and looked at the time. It was almost five o'clock.
The lights in the room were all on, but it was still dark outside. Even when the lights were turned off, it was already dawn. Ye Jingan lay on the bed and breathed a sigh of relief, saying, "It should be hiding now. It will probably come again tomorrow night. Let's prepare well."
"Yeah, then I'll go back and sleep for a while." Qiu Zimu said.
It was already noon the next day when Ye Jingan woke up. He heard the quarrel downstairs in a daze. Ye Jingan thought, it seems that my aunt was playing cards yesterday. Could it be that she lost money and refused to admit it, and now she is quarreling?
He got up, washed, and went downstairs to ask, "Auntie, what happened?"
"Xiao Ye is awake. Yesterday, the monster killed all the chickens in your Aunt Zhang's house!" said Aunt Li.
Aunt Zhang squatted beside him, crying and cursing. Ye Jing'an remembered that the crying cat corpse had been hiding in the bushes yesterday, seemingly eating something. He ran over and parted the bushes to see that the leaves were stained with blood. A piece of gray fur was hanging from a branch, torn to pieces. However, the head had not been eaten and was thrown aside. Although it was covered in blood, the iconic ears made it clear that it was a rabbit.
"Auntie, is the chicken carcass still there? I want to see it." Ye Jing'an asked.
"Yes, those hens were very well behaved and could lay eggs. Now they died tragically in the yard. Aunt Zhang couldn't bear to see the scene and never cleaned it up." Aunt Li took him to her backyard. The two houses were quite far apart, so it was no wonder that he didn't hear the sound of the chickens flapping their wings when they died tragically.
There is an awning along the white wall, and a semicircle is surrounded by a bamboo fence on the ground. The wet chicken droppings on the ground have dried up a little in this hot weather, and the heat wave brings the smell of chicken feed and chicken droppings to the face.
Ye Jing'an pinched his nose and moved forward to take a look. The ground was covered with chicken feathers, just like the ground in the bushes. The chickens were torn to pieces, with bloody skin scattered all over the chicken coop, and the chicken necks and heads were thrown outside the fence.
"Ye Jing'an, why are you here? Why didn't you call me?" Qiu Zimu said.
"Didn't you say that the Crying Cat Corpse likes to eat human blood?" Ye Jing'an pointed at the chicken ring and said, "It's so disgusting, and it's quite picky about not eating the brain."
"Well, it likes to drink human blood and doesn't eat human flesh. It didn't say it doesn't like to eat other meats." Qiu Zimu said.
"..." Ye Jingan said, "Then we don't know when it's full and when it's hungry. We have to see what it wants to eat when it's hungry."
Ye Jingan saw things clearly and decided, why bother looking for it? He could just wait there at night and beat it to death if he caught it. Killing monsters wouldn't get him fined or jailed, right? He should go catch up on his sleep now, otherwise he'd be in trouble if he got too sleepy.
After dinner, Ye Jingan began to draw talismans. If there were any talismans that could fight ghosts against this monster, he could just throw them at it! There was no point in chopping it with a sword, as there had to be something to deal with it. Ye Jingan said to Qiu Zimu, "Let's go and find a place to hide and see what kind of monster it is. It's been all these days since we've seen its face."
The aunts were sitting in the living room downstairs. Knowing they were going out at night, they waited until they came downstairs. Aunt Li stuffed a backpack with things in their hands and said, "Be careful. If you can't fight, run away. It's more important to save your own life."
