Return without success

Return without success

It was noon, so there was plenty of time. Ye Jing'an and Qiu Zimu were also hungry, so they sat on a dead tree trunk to rest and eat some dry food.

"Hey, this is where the bear was photographed..." Qiu Zimu said.

"It's nothing, I was just passing by. I guess I'm hiding somewhere to sleep now." Ye Jing'an said, "Why doesn't the crying cat corpse come out? Are there any records of its living habits in your family's notes?"

Qiu Zimu looked through the notes, which only recorded that the crying cat appeared at night and liked to eat human blood.

"It must have drunk enough blood from Aunt Li's son and gone somewhere to digest it." Ye Jing'an asked again, "How often does it eat?"

Qiu Zimu said speechlessly, "Brother, my ancestors were wizards, not biologists! Just kill it, why do you care when it eats?!"

"Tsk, this is called knowing yourself and your enemy, and you will never be defeated in a hundred battles!" Ye Jing'an said.

"You go and do your research and fill in the information," Qiu Zimu said.

"How can I research this? It's still unclear whether this thing exists or not. Now I'm just listening to your description." Ye Jing'an looked towards the distant hillside. A scene of a wild man running appeared in his mind. There were often eyewitness reports of this kind of thing. "Hiss, do you think they saw a wild man?"

"It's unlikely. I took notes about that thing and remember it existed. It's called a mandrill. It's indeed a humanoid monster that likes to play tricks on people. But it doesn't suck human blood. At most, it will, uh..." Qiu Zimu looked at Ye Jing'an with a look that said you know what I mean.

"What happened to him?" Ye Jing'an asked.

"Just drag him into the cave and do that." Qiu Zimu said.

"Oh, that's not it." Ye Jingan stood up and patted the dead leaves on his pants and said, "Have you finished eating? Let's go."

The fifth point was quite far from here. He had to circle halfway around the mountain before he could see a small ravine. If he had seen a small ravine with water in the past, Ye Jingan would have been extremely curious and would have rushed over to wash his face and look for crabs. But now, he didn't want to go over to see what was in the ravine at all. That woman's face was too disgusting.

"Ye Jing'an, what are you doing standing there? Come here, the water is cool!" Qiu Zimu shouted.

"Stop playing and let's go! The water in the video is bigger than this, it should be in the front." Ye Jing'an urged.

"What the hell, you don't even want to go play in the water?!" Qiu Zimu said.

"I'm an adult. How can I be like a child like you?" Ye Jing'an said.

"I believe you will change your personality when you grow up! You must have been scared by the female ghost in the ditch near my house! Hahahahahahahaha..." Qiu Zimu sneered.

"Get lost!" Ye Jing'an said after checking the location. "It's only three kilometers ahead. Keep an eye out."

"Okay, sometimes you can find good insects by the water. Please help me keep an eye on them." Qiu Zimu said.

Ye Jing'an let Qiu Zimu walk in front. He really didn't know much about insects and didn't know what kind he wanted. It would be a pity if the insect was not seen under his feet and was stepped on to death or scared away.

After they walked for a few minutes, Qiu Zimu suddenly stopped, slowly turned his head and said to Ye Jingan, "There's a rabbit drinking water up ahead."

Ye Jingan followed the direction of Qiu Zimu's finger and saw a large brown rabbit. He took Qiu Zimu's net and said, "You block it here, I'll go around the back and catch it."

Ye Jing'an tiptoed around to the back, where the hare was combing its fur. Ye Jing'an made an OK gesture to Qiu Zimu, and the two of them approached quietly.

The rabbit realized something was wrong and ran sideways. Ye Jing'an swung his net and thought he would definitely catch it, but he didn't expect the rabbit to be so slick and fake a move to run in the other direction. Qiu Zimu saw it coming and pounced, but his catch was also in vain.

"Aren't you full?" Qiu Zimu asked.

"You're right." Ye Jing'an threw the net to him. "Hurry up and find the camera and go back. This little bit of dry food won't fill you up. I want to try the mushrooms I picked today."

The further we go, the more wild animals we see. Hares are running around, and various water birds are watching the fish in the water. This place is really good for large carnivores, and the scene captured in the camera is somewhat similar to this.

The two looked around but didn't see any trace of the camera.

Seeing that the phone's location was right here, but for some reason they couldn't find it, the two continued to move forward. The stream in front was very different from the one in the video. It seemed that it was at the same location as before, but the camera had gone somewhere.

"Could it be that the police took the last one away?" Qiu Zimu asked suspiciously.

"That shouldn't happen. They'd take them all together, not just one." Ye Jing'an thought for a moment and said, "It's more likely that it was taken away by an animal."

They searched the surrounding forest for a hundred meters, but still couldn't find it, so they returned empty-handed. They'd already found four cameras, so missing this one wouldn't matter; it might not even capture what they were looking for.

It was already four in the afternoon when I got home. Aunt Li had already cooked and was washing vegetables. Seeing Ye Jingan and Qiu Zimu coming back, she smiled and said, "You're back. You must be exhausted after a long day. Come in and have some fruit and rest for a while. I'll cook right away."

"Okay, thank you, Auntie." Ye Jingan took out the milk mushrooms from the bag and said, "Auntie, can you stir-fry this?"

"Fruits, there are so many! I also go to the mountains to pick them often. There are a lot of them in this mountain. My son likes to eat the fried meat with frost mushrooms that I make the most..." Aunt Li said as the smile on her face faded.

Qiu Zimu squatted down and said, "Then I have to try my aunt's cooking skills. Let us help you wash it together."

These two kilograms of mushrooms still had sand in them after washing them four times. Ye Jingan almost didn't want to eat them after washing them so much. They were too difficult to wash.

Aunt Li saw them washing the gills to remove the water, so she said to them, "That's not the way to wash it. If you wash away the butter, the fried meat won't taste good. Let me do it, you go and rest."

Ye Jingan usually ate right away at dinnertime and never washed vegetables. Qiu Zimu would occasionally make fried rice or cook, but washing milk mushrooms was his first time.

The two thought they could help Auntie with other things, such as chopping vegetables and washing dishes. When they walked into the kitchen, they saw that everything was ready except for cooking. Auntie Li smiled and said, "It's okay. Auntie can do it well by herself. You guys should take a rest."

"Okay, thank you for your help, Auntie." The two returned to the room and took this opportunity to export the video to see if they had captured the crying cat corpse.

The four infrared cameras had been in operation for half a month, and they had captured a lot of wild animals, including some species under national first-class protection, but they hadn't captured the crying cat corpse that Qiu Zimu had described. Ye Jing'an questioned, "After all these days, if it existed, you should have captured it at least once, right? Are your notes reliable?"

"It's definitely reliable, but Jianguo doesn't allow spirits to become spirits anymore." Qiu Zimu laughed dryly.

Ye Jingan: “…”

"Come down and eat." Aunt Li brought out the pot and stewed mushrooms and meat on low heat. There were two kinds of vegetables in the basket next to it for the hot pot.

"This smells so good." Ye Jing'an and Qiu Zimu stared at the meat in the pot. The big steamed buns with pickled mustard greens they had at noon were not filling at all.

"Try it." Aunt Li handed them the chopsticks.

"Delicious!" said Qiu Zimu.

"So this is the milk mushroom. I've eaten it before and it's really delicious," said Ye Jing'an.

The mushrooms and meat in the pot were soon gone, so the aunt added some soup to cook some side dishes. Ye Jingan also filled a bowl of rice and waited for the dishes to cook. At this time, Ye Jingan asked, "Auntie, when was the last time you saw the corpse of a crying cat?"

"Four days ago." said Aunt Li.

Ye Jing'an nodded affirmatively. If the Weeping Cat Corpse really existed, then his guess was correct. It must have eaten its fill and gone somewhere to digest its food. He just didn't know how often it ate. If it only ate once every few months, when would he find the right time? Was there any way to lure it out?

A cat's cry disrupted Ye Jingan's thoughts. His aunt shouted in fear, "It's coming! It's coming!"

"Auntie, don't panic. It might just be an ordinary kitten looking for food." Qiu Zimu patted Ye Jing'an and said, "Shall we go and take a look?"

"Yes." Ye Jing'an still brought the Ye'an Sword with him, just in case something was lurking in the dark, "Auntie, close the door tightly and don't come out."

The two walked around the area and found nothing, just like before. But maybe it was the psychological effect of hearing the cat's meow, they always felt like they were being watched.

Ye Jingan and Qiu Zimu looked at each other and walked back tacitly. They hadn't finished the hot pot yet, so they decided to eat first.

Aunt Li paced anxiously in the living room. Seeing them return, she asked, "Is the monster here again?"

"It's just a kitten, don't be afraid, Auntie, just continue eating." Ye Jing'an said.

This sudden incident was a bit off-putting; the stew in the pot didn't seem as tasty as it had been at the beginning. Ye Jing'an was a little annoyed by this elusive thing. He pulled a stool and sat at the door, looking at the woods across the way. Waiting like this wasn't a solution; going out to look for it wouldn't be able to find it either.

What bothered him most was that he had never seen the monster in person and didn't know if it really existed. It wasn't that he didn't believe what Aunt Li said, but when people are extremely frightened, they do imagine a lot of outrageous things. In the dark of night, it was very possible to imagine the branches swaying in the wind in the distance as a humanoid monster.

Ye Jingan sighed and said, "Just wait, it'll get hungry eventually." When it got dark, Ye Jingan and Qiu Zimu took their gear and went out for a stroll. They were so hungry for meat and blood that they would hang out outside every night, just because they didn't believe it wouldn't come out.

There was a bit of a breeze tonight, so it was quite pleasant to take a walk outside. The two of them first walked around the outside of the house twice, but found nothing. They thought about walking deeper into the woods. Anyway, they wouldn't be able to sleep if they went back now. The further they walked, the louder the chirping of insects became. As they walked under the trees, they would occasionally startle the night birds that had settled in the trees.

Qiu Zimu yawned and said, "I'm a little sleepy. Why don't we go back? I don't think we'll meet again today."

Ye Jingan nodded: "Well, I'll go out and buy a few cameras tomorrow and install them at the door of Aunt Li's house. I can watch from the room."

They took a bath and went to bed comfortably.
