Chapter 13

Chapter 13

After the bonfire at the back went out, the sound disappeared. I didn't dare to go out to see, nor did I dare to sleep. I decided to wait until dawn to see what was going on.

In this agony, I squinted my eyes and waited for dawn to come.

I looked outside the tent and saw a light appear. The darkness gradually faded and it was finally daybreak. I carefully opened the tent and looked outside. I saw that the flying moths had left, so I walked out of the tent.

I saw the fire was filled with the bodies of moths, most of which were burned to pieces, and few were intact. I turned the moth over with my foot and found that its back looked like a strange human face.

Isn't this a ghost moth?

The ghost moth, also known as the ghost-faced hawk moth, gets its name from the pattern on its back that resembles a ghost face. As I was thinking about this, I heard the sound of a helicopter in the distance. The helicopter landed in front of me, and Zheng Yunyun got out, followed by two men.

"Yunyun!" I was surprised why she came back. "Aren't you in the hospital?"

"Last night, after I talked to you, I called the police. Now the search and rescue team is rushing up from the foot of the mountain. The person next to me is the leader of the search and rescue team. Let's come and look for Zhang Yu first." Zheng Yunyun said.

"How's your own health?"

"I'm fine now."

While I was talking to her, the satellite phone in the tent rang.

I ran back and picked up the phone: "Hello?"

There was a staccato voice on the other end of the line. It was the professor. The signal was poor, though, and the voice was fuzzy, so they couldn't hear me clearly. They didn't know Zhang Yu was missing, and they kept telling us to quickly follow their markings.

After Zhang Yu's disappearance and the swarm of moths we encountered last night, I started to worry about Zhang Song and Mao Jianming. Now that Zheng Yunyun and the search and rescue team have arrived, I want to go find them quickly. One more here won't make any difference, and one less won't make any difference either.

But when I told Zheng Yunyun about this, she was very opposed. The main reason was that Zhang Yu had disappeared, and she was worried about the danger of me going into the mountains alone. I felt a little uneasy, but she couldn't persuade me, so she finally agreed.

I picked up my luggage and followed the signs to find them.

Before we were about to be attacked by wolves, I deliberately took a detour to avoid them. If I had encountered them alone, I would have been in great danger. However, during this detour, I discovered the markings left by Zhang Song and his men, which allowed me to take a shortcut.

I kept walking along their marks. The trees became taller and taller, and even in the daytime, no light could penetrate the entire forest.

I heard a voice nearby and turned around and called out, "Who is it?"

A dark shadow quickly left from behind the tree.

It looks like a monkey.

I pulled out my satellite phone and found no signal.

I mustered my courage and continued following the markings when I suddenly stepped on something soft. Looking down, I jumped away in shock. It was the body of a wolf, only its fur now shrouded in fur, not even the bones. I noticed the wound on its abdomen was identical to the one Zhang Song had slashed open. Could this be the wolf? But why was it there? And with no bones at all? Even if it had been eaten by another beast, it wouldn't have been so completely devoured.

Just as I thought of this, there was a rustling sound above my head.

The dark shadow that had just darted through the branches was indeed a monkey. Its fur was completely black, save for a band of white hair around its face. It roared and darted through the forest.

When I looked at the wolf corpse again, I made a bigger discovery.

In front of the wolf carcass were six or seven wolf skins. I call them wolf skins because only the fur was left, shriveled and spread on the ground.

This was definitely not done by any wild beast, or Zhang Song and the others.

This strange scene made my heart feel heavy. I didn't dare to stay any longer and quickened my pace to catch up with Zhang Song and the others.

We walked until night, but I didn't dare to set up camp. I simply sat on the ground and ate some compressed biscuits and continued walking with a flashlight. Although it is unsafe to move at night, I felt that staying in one place for a long time in the heart of Mount Eshan was even more unsafe.

The woods were very quiet at night, and the sound of my footsteps echoed clearly in my ears. I didn't encounter any wild animals along the way.

"Rustle, rustle." A creepy sound suddenly came from behind me. I shone the flashlight and saw a swarm of moths flying towards me.

I was so scared that I ran away.

But the moths behind him were chasing closely.

Those were the ghost moths I encountered last night. I didn’t expect that they would catch up with me even though I was so far away from there.

I fled at top speed, weaving through the woods. But those swarms weren't slowing down either, gradually closing the distance. Thinking of the consequences of being caught up by them, I sped up even more. Unexpectedly, I tripped over a branch in the road and fell flat on my face. Without even a moment to cry out in pain, I quickly got up and continued running. But as I ran, I realized I had twisted my ankle, and the pain was excruciating with every exertion.

I tried to escape by twisting and turning, but the group of ghost moths caught up with me in an instant.

Just then, I saw an orange tent ahead. It must have been the professor's tent, since the ones we had were all blue. Without giving it any thought, I tossed my flashlight aside and scrambled into the tent.

The group of ghost moths flew over after the flashlight.

I sat in the tent and quickly zipped it up.

But as I touched, I felt something inside the tent. With no light, I had no idea what it was, relying on my senses. As I felt around, something felt wrong: it felt like clothing, and the person beneath it was cold.

A bad thought came to my mind.

It turned out to be a corpse.

My heart was pounding, and I quickly withdrew my hand, opened the tent and ran out.

But the next second my heart almost stopped, and just as I was about to run out of the tent, a hand suddenly grabbed my foot.

I screamed and kicked the hand hard.

But no matter how hard I kicked, I couldn't break free. In desperation, I found a large rock on the ground. I raised it and threw it towards the tent. There was a loud thud. The man didn't cry out in pain, but I felt him fall backwards.

I took the opportunity to struggle free, and with a click, the hand was pulled down by me.

I didn't care about that at all. I finally broke free and ran away. So I limped away from this place with that hand hanging on my ankle.

I don't know if that thing caught up with me, but the hand on my ankle gave me goosebumps all over my body. I squatted down and pulled the hand off my ankle with force and threw it far away.

I heard footsteps behind me, and I knew it was the corpse. Terrified, I hurried on. But my sprained ankle hurt so much that I had to rest after every two steps. Even though the creature was walking slowly, it could still catch up to me.

When people are pushed to their limits, they will burst out with great potential. As I ran, I felt less pain, and although it was pitch black around me, I could roughly see the environment. Unfortunately, however, my foot slipped and I slid down the mountain.
