Chapter 12

Chapter 12

When she woke up, she looked better and more stable.

"Awake?" I asked her.

When she saw it was me, she held my hand tightly.

Li Bin came over from behind and saw that she had woken up. He asked her, "Where's Yuzi?"

When Zhang Yu was mentioned, she was still very scared, and then she pulled Li Bin and me down the mountain.

She ran for a long time, and we couldn't understand what she was doing. Finally, she was exhausted, so she stopped and squatted on the ground and started crying.

"Yunyun, what's wrong?" I asked him puzzledly.

"Please say something. I'm so anxious." Li Bin said.

"Don't be in a hurry." I glanced at Li Bin.

"Zhang Yu is dead." Zheng Yunyun said crying.

When I heard her words, I was shocked: "What?!"

Li Bin seemed to have misheard and shouted excitedly: "What did you just say?"

"Zhang Yu is dead." Zheng Yunyun repeated.

We learned from Zheng Yunyun that after they parted ways with us, they returned along the same route they had come. Nothing happened during the day, but at night, while she and Zhang Yu were resting in the tent, a strange noise suddenly rang out outside.

Zhang Yu went out to investigate, and soon after, screams were heard. Zheng Yunyun hurried out to see what had happened. Strangely, there was no one outside the tent. She searched for a long time but couldn't find any trace of Zhang Yu. It was dark, and she was alone, so she was terrified and went back into the tent to turn on the flashlight.

As a result, winged insects began to fall outside the tent, covering the entire tent. They landed on the tent and slowly flapped their wings. Zheng Yunyun, who was already frightened because she couldn't find Zhang Yu, was even more frightened when she saw the dense swarm of small insects outside the tent.

After a night of nervous tension, she was already somewhat confused when she saw me and Li Bin. I woke her up, and once her highly tense nerves relaxed, she fell asleep to protect herself.

When she woke up again, she knew it was not a good place to stay for long. She also had a hunch that Zhang Yu was dead and that those little insects were responsible. That's why she pulled us to run as fast as she could, fearing those creatures would come out again.

"So you didn't see Zhang Yu's body?" I asked.

Zheng Yunyun shook her head.

"Maybe Zhang Yu is not dead." I said.

"That's right. Since we haven't seen his body, we can't draw any conclusions," said Li Bin.

"Well, you take Yunyun to the hospital first, and I'll go look for Yuzi."

"You are still injured, how can you go to find Zhang Yu? I see Yunyun's fever has subsided now. You two should go to the hospital and get a thorough check-up. I will go to find Zhang Yu." I said.

"That's impossible, you're a girl." Li Bin said.

"This is already the best solution. If we delay any longer, Zhang Yu will be in greater danger. Stop talking nonsense. Yunyun, you and Li Bin go back first, and we'll contact each other by phone." I said.

"But my satellite phone is still in the tent," said Zheng Yunyun.

Hearing her say that, I took out the satellite phone from my bag and gave it to her, saying, "You two go to the hospital now. I'll go back and get the satellite phone, and then go find Zhang Yu."

Li Bin wanted to argue with me again, but his injuries required urgent hospital treatment. In the end, he couldn't win the fight, so he walked down the mountain with Zheng Yunyun. If nothing unexpected happened, they would be back in Eshan County by tonight.

I quickened my pace back to the tent. I'd just run quite a distance. I had my own plans for staying. After I found Zhang Yu, if he wasn't seriously injured, I'd let him go down the mountain on his own while I went straight to Zhang Song and Mao Jianming, saving time. But judging by the situation, Zhang Yu was most likely in danger.

Arriving at their campsite, I saw Zhang Yunyun and Zhang Yu's bags still inside the tent I'd cut open. I fished out my satellite phone and hid the bags behind a tree.

I have to go find Zhang Yu while it's still day, otherwise it will be even harder to find him once it gets dark.

I called out to Zhang Yu, but there was no response. I searched the area around the campsite several times but couldn't find him. I was getting worried. If he had been dragged away by a wolf or some other beast we encountered, there should have been traces on the ground, but I couldn't find any.

Could it be possible that Zhang Yu could just disappear out of thin air?

If they were really eaten by the insects that Zheng Yunyun mentioned, it would be impossible that not even clothes or shoes would be left, not to mention that there was no bloodstain near the camp.

But my search did not stop, hoping that he would appear in front of me in the next second.

But I've searched all day and found nothing. I'm wondering if I should sleep here tonight. It's definitely dangerous here, and I might end up like Zhang Yu. But if I don't camp here, maybe Zhang Yu will come back, or I might find some clues at night.

Finally I made a decision to stay here tonight.

I gathered a lot of relatively dry firewood and piled it beside the tent. Then I built a circle with stones, placed the tinder at the bottom, piled the firewood on top, and started the fire with a flint. I learned this from Zhang Song. Watching the fire burn, I felt an inexplicable sense of security.

This place is different from the heart of Eshan. Looking up at the sky, you can still see a few stars. I checked my satellite phone and found that there was a signal.

At nine o'clock in the evening, I was sitting by the fire when my satellite phone rang.

I answered the phone. It was Zheng Yunyun. She told me they had arrived safely at the hospital and asked if I had found Zhang Yu. I regretfully told her I hadn't found any trace of Zhang Yu. She was silent for a moment, then suggested we call the police.

This is a solution. If I continue looking for him alone, I might not be able to find him for ten days or half a month. Then Zhang Yunyun hung up the phone and called the police.

I added two more logs to the campfire. It was a little scary being alone in this deep forest. The thought gave me goosebumps. I added more wood and went back to the tent.

I was just thinking about Zhang Yu when I heard the crackling of the fire outside. I pried open the tent a little and saw countless moths flying above the fire. They were huge, as big as butterflies. They swirled around the campfire, forming a line and flying towards the flames one after another. The sound just now was the flames burning the moths.

Seeing this, I felt a chill all over my body. There were so many moths, covering the entire sky like a plague of locusts. I quickly closed the tent and lay down inside, not daring to make a sound. I thought to myself, "They're going to leave now!"

But that sound continued until the second half of the night, and it almost drove me crazy.
