Chapter 3: Split up and watch the fun
"If you want a divorce, we can do it now!" Miao Guifeng said, pointing to the front door. "No need to wait until tomorrow, let's go now!"
After Miao Guifeng opened the door with her finger, she went to drag her husband Yang Bingrong and asked him to divorce her.
"Divorce, Bingrong, just divorce her. She is a country woman. If she divorces you, she can only go back to the countryside!" said Old Mrs. Yang.
"Mom, can you please stop making trouble?" Yang Bingrong had no intention of divorcing his wife. He had never imagined that his own mother would actually sell her own son.
Yang Bingrong had always known that his mother loved his younger brother and was partial to him. Now, after his mother betrayed her grandson and demanded a divorce, he couldn't possibly do so. Given his family's current situation, no woman would be willing to marry him if he divorced.
"If you divorce her, I'll introduce you to someone new," said Old Mrs. Yang.
"Your youngest son hasn't even gotten married yet, and you're going to introduce another one to your eldest son?" Miao Guifeng pouted. "After we divorced, you'd say your eldest son already has a big, fat grandson, so why would he get married?"
Miao Guifeng knew Old Lady Yang too well. She was very likely to do something like this. Old Lady Yang was not a good person. She was cunning and only knew how to trick her eldest son's family.
"Let's split up, let's split up!" Yang Bingrong said hurriedly. He pulled Miao Guifeng and told her not to go out.
Miao Guifeng's voice was loud, and they lived in a large courtyard, with many nearby families living very close to them. Some people had already known about Old Lady Yang selling her grandson, and with the police already at their door, it was hard for those people not to know.
At this moment, there were people pretending to wash clothes in the yard, but in fact they just wanted to hear about what was happening at the Yang family.
With the Yang family's affairs at hand, the Jiang family's affairs seemed much less important.
Yang Bingrong and his wife separated from Old Lady Yang and the others. Due to the limited rooms in the house, they could only take one. As for the kitchen and other things, they took turns using them. Yang Bingrong and his wife still had to provide some pension, but not much, just two yuan a month and annual gifts for the holidays. That was about it.
Miao Guifeng knew that Yang Bingrong was a filial man, and if she really asked him to stop giving her pension, he would never do that. Miao Guifeng hated Yang Bingrong's foolish filial piety, but she also knew that if a man was not filial to his own parents, how could she expect him to be good to his wife?
Jiang Moli knew Miao Guifeng was the heroine of the period novel, and Jiang Yuqin served as a comparison. After her rebirth, Miao Guifeng stopped being so kind to her in-laws and treated her biological children well. She also reformed her husband, teaching him to care for their children. Jiang Yuqin, however, refused to listen to her family elders and insisted on becoming a stepmother. She devoted much to her adopted son, but he thought she was faking it, and her biological children felt she didn't care about them.
It doesn't matter who is the heroine or the control group. Jiang Moli just doesn't want these people's affairs to affect her family. She just wants her family to live a peaceful and stable life and let Jiang Yuqin and the others to deal with it themselves.
"There's been a commotion next door for quite a while." Jiang Moli was standing at the door. She saw her mother and said something casually.
"We have so many things to do at home, and you're still watching other people's fun." Jiang's mother said.
"Look, why not?" Jiang Moli patted the corner of her clothes gently. "Aren't we just looking around?"
"You," Jiang's mother said, "Stand further away."
"I'm standing in my own home." Jiang Moli said.
Jiang's mother glanced in the direction of the Yang family. Old Lady Yang was truly sinful. Her youngest son was in debt, and Old Lady Yang and her husband could have used their family savings to pay it off. If they couldn't pay it back, they could have just kept the debt. Why would they have sold their eldest son's child? Old Lady Yang was too cruel. That was her own grandson, and Yang Bingrong's firstborn.
These people had a better understanding of Old Lady Yang's partiality. They thought it was right for Miao Guifeng and his wife to separate from Old Lady Yang and the others. If they didn't, who knows what would happen in the future. It would be better to separate the family early to save trouble.
Jiang Yuqin took the two quilts back to the Ding family. Her husband was Ding Chao, who had a stable job in the factory. Before Jiang Yuqin put the quilts down, she heard the baby crying.
"Let me do it." Jiang Yuqin saw Ding Chao in a panic, so she quickly took the child and looked very skilled.
In fact, Jiang Yuqin had never taken care of a child before. When Jiang Moli was little, her mother didn't dare let her take care of her. Jiang Yuqin once pinched little Jiang Moli and even drank the milk in her bottle, saying that she had already drunk it. Later, when Jiang's mother found out, she really didn't dare let her daughter have much contact with her stepdaughter.
Jiang Yuqin had seen how other people raised their children. The child was a little over one year old, not yet two. He was a small ball, not like other people's children who were white and chubby.
"Make him some milk powder and some rice porridge," Jiang Yuqin said. "At his age, he can eat something else. He can't grow by just drinking milk."
Jiang Yuqin asked others how to raise a child well. She didn't dare to directly say that she would not feed the child. Ding Chao had said before that the child was still too thin and needed to buy some milk powder.
"Uncle, aunt, what did they say?" Ding Chao handed the bottle to Jiang Yuqin. He had just prepared the milk powder.
"What else can I say?" Jiang Yuqin let the child drink from the bottle. "We've already got the marriage certificate."
"You shouldn't act first and report later." Ding Chao said.
"I'm thinking about my own happiness and bravely pursuing it." Jiang Yuqin said, "You know what my family situation is like. My father and my stepmother have another daughter, and my father only has eyes for the younger one, not the older one. If I marry according to their ideas, I might end up marrying a cripple. Even if not a cripple, I'd end up marrying a terrible man. They won't think about me. My father listens to my stepmother in everything."
Jiang's mother hadn't introduced anyone to Jiang Yuqin, nor had she intended for her to marry a cripple or a scumbag. But Jiang Yuqin herself had that in mind, and she had also met relatives from her mother's side, who all spoke ill of Jiang's mother. Many people said stepmothers were rarely good, so Jiang Yuqin had been wary of her mother for a long time. Little did Jiang Yuqin know that her mother didn't want to care about her troubles at all, and she didn't want to be responsible for Jiang Yuqin for the rest of her life.
"Wait a couple of days, until my dad calms down, then we'll go over." Jiang Yuqin looked at the child in her arms. "This child will be our son from now on. I will treat him as my own. I have a stepmother, and I know what it's like to be someone's stepdaughter. I will definitely not let this child suffer the same hardship I did."
"Alas." Ding Chao sighed, "Now that you're here, the child has stopped crying."
"This shows that he and I are destined to be mother and son." Jiang Yuqin said.
In the evening, Jiang's mother prepared the meal. Jiang Moli saw a table full of vegetarian dishes, without even an egg.
"Mom, didn't we agree to make scrambled eggs with leeks tonight?" Jiang Moli bit her chopsticks.
"We'll eat it another day." Jiang's mother said.
"Go make some fried eggs for Jasmine." Father Jiang looked at Jiang Moli, "Is one enough? How about making two?"
"Fry three, one for each of us." Jiang Moli said.
Jiang's mother had no choice but to fry eggs.
Father Jiang felt that his youngest daughter was relatively obedient and sensible. She did not cause him so much trouble. She was also very hardworking and started working in a Yue Opera Troupe early on. She was also admitted to the Nancheng Art College.
"You are about to graduate. What will the regulations be like then?" asked Jiang's father.
"After graduation, I'll continue working at my original company." Jiang Moli looked around. "The teacher said that if I perform well, I can be transferred to the provincial Xiaobaihua Drama Troupe."
Many people were watching the Provincial Xiaobaihua Opera Troupe, including Jiang Moli. Jiang Moli's previous performance in "Five Daughters Paying Homage to Their Birthday" was about the role of a maid, and her subsequent performance was about the role of an adopted daughter. Her performance was considered excellent. But sometimes, it's not just about the individual's excellence; it can also be about connections.
Many opera singers pass down their skills from mother to daughter, or from father to son. They have talent, hard work, and connections to pass it down this way.
Jiang Moli couldn't guarantee that she could defeat these people, so she couldn't speak too soon.
When Jiang Moli was studying, she also participated in the performances of her unit. Jiang Moli was not arrogant. She did not think that she would become great after studying with a great teacher.
"Do you need connections?" asked Jiang's father.
"No need." Jiang Moli shook her head. "Our teacher doesn't like these things. If we make the teacher unhappy because of this, that would be bad."
Jiang Moli planned to go to her teacher's house another day. She had a good relationship with her teacher, who often let her in. Jiang Moli was relatively well-off. As a girl, she didn't have a big appetite and ate very little. Some of the male students had big appetites and ate a lot when they went to their teacher's house. Their teacher didn't forbid them from going, and sometimes even subsidized the students.
"Well, you still have to obey your teacher." Jiang's father said, "Don't be too naughty. People in your line of work should pay attention to the master and respect the teacher."
"I know, I know." Jiang Moli knew everything. She knew how to plan for her future. Her family didn't have enough money to help her with relationships, so Jiang Moli had to rely on herself. She couldn't think too much about her mother, who had a son. Jiang Moli's brother was still in the countryside.
My brother will return to the city sooner or later. He can't stay in the countryside forever. It just depends on when he will return to the city.
Jiang Moli didn't mind her brother's return to the city, and she didn't think about arguing with him. Her brother wasn't her father's biological son, so her father wouldn't let him inherit all the family property. There weren't many things in the house, and the only thing that was valuable was this house. This house wasn't worth much now, but it would be valuable in the future.
"Okay, the fried eggs are ready." Jiang's mother made two fried eggs instead of three. She placed the two fried eggs in her husband's and daughter's bowls respectively, but did not make any for herself.
"Mom." Jiang Moli said, "Didn't we agree on three?"
"I don't eat eggs," Jiang's mother said. "My blood pressure is a little high, so it's better not to eat eggs."
"Dad doesn't have high blood pressure, you..."
"It's high blood pressure." Jiang's mother stopped Jiang Moli from continuing, "Eat your eggs."
Jiang Moli originally wanted to give half of the eggs to Jiang's mother, but Jiang's mother said she had high blood pressure, so Jiang Moli did not share the eggs with Jiang's mother.
"Mom, you need to go to the hospital for a checkup, check your cholesterol and other things." Jiang Moli said, "Things like cholesterol are really not good to eat egg yolks or animal offal."
"It's just a small matter, it's usually nothing." Jiang's mother said.
Father Jiang took a bite of the fried egg. The fried egg was a little crispy on both sides and tasted really good.
At the Yang family, Miao Guifeng's brother-in-law Yang Bingliang came home late. He had been playing outside for a long time. When he returned home, he learned that his elder brother and sister-in-law were arguing about dividing the family property.
"What are Big Brother and Sister-in-law doing?" Yang Bingliang asked, "Splitting up the family? I think they don't want to provide for you in your old age, so that's why they're talking about splitting up the family."
