It was rare for Zhou Pin to joke around like this, and the two chatted and laughed as they finished their meal and rested in the car.
The henchmen who collected protection money had been eliminated, and no one was causing trouble, so the two could sleep peacefully. However, the sunlight outside made it feel like they were sleeping in broad daylight. Zhou Pin pulled the blackout curtains on the glass, and the two finally fell asleep.
After waking up, I didn't even check the time and just set off, since it was all daytime anyway.
The drive back was relatively smooth, taking 3 hours. Just outside Tianjin, Shuke Beta started scratching the car again.
"You lazy donkeys always poop and pee when you get on the road. Didn't you just go to the toilet before we set off? Next time I'll put diapers on you." Xu Lin complained as she opened the car door for them.
Shuke dashed out, and Beta bit Xu Lin's trouser leg, trying to get her to come with him.
Zhou Pin turned off the car and pulled Xu Lin to follow behind Beta.
Shuke stopped the car by the roadside. Xu Lin and Zhou Pin walked over and looked down. There were people in the ditch!
"Why are you meddling in other people's business at a time like this!" Xu Lin patted Shuke on the head.
"Shuke isn't a meddlesome dog, let's rescue him and take a look," Zhou Pin said, trying to help Shuke out of the predicament.
Xu Lin went back to the car and got a rope, and together with Zhou Pin, they pulled the person out of the ditch.
"It's just a child, and he's so thin," Xu Lin said. "And he looks kind of familiar, don't you think?"
"It does look somewhat familiar. It's not far from the base. Let's take it back first; it's probably starving," Zhou Pin said.
Xu Lin drove the car back, Zhou Pin carried the person into the car, and they set off again.
It was only noon when they returned to the base. Xu Lin tidied up a bedroom on the first floor that was being used as a storage room, and Zhou Pin put the child he had found on the bed and began to examine him.
"It's probably just malnutrition and hunger that caused him to faint. The minor abrasions are nothing serious. I'll go make some food," Zhou Pin said after checking him over.
“Look at him, doesn’t he look like Dr. Dai?” Xu Lin, who was standing by the bed, suddenly said.
Zhou Pin took a closer look and it did indeed look like it.
Ten minutes later, Dr. Dai ran all the way from the hospital and went straight to the bed in the bedroom on the first floor.
"Haohao!" Dr. Dai cried out, holding the baby on the bed.
After Dr. Dai calmed down, Xu Lin told her what had happened.
"Thank you so much!" Dr. Dai said, unable to hide his excitement.
"No need to thank us. Please check on his health first. We'll see if anything's wrong since he hasn't woken up," Xu Lin said.
Dr. Dai quickly took out his stethoscope to examine Hao Hao on the bed.
“There’s nothing seriously wrong. He’s probably malnourished and hungry. Can you help me take him to the hospital? He needs IV fluids in this condition, and I also want to take him to the hospital for a thorough examination.” Her statement was similar to Zhou Pin’s.
“Zhou Pin is cooking, I’ll take you there,” Xu Lin said.
By the time Xu Lin returned from taking Dr. Dai and her son to the hospital, Zhou Pin had already prepared dinner.
"How is it?" Zhou Pin asked.
"Dr. Dai conducted a thorough examination and found nothing wrong. The only problem is that we don't know where his father is or what his condition is now."
"We'll know when he wakes up; he's a smart kid."
"You could tell that? Are you a fortune teller?"
"Do you remember when we went to Jinshi, Shuke got off the bus on the way?"
"You mean, it was him back then, but he just hid?"
"Yes, if nothing unexpected happens, it's him. I checked the footprints, they match," Zhou Pin said.
Xu Lin was very surprised after hearing Zhou Pin's story. This was a ten-year-old child who had managed to evade searches all the way.
