After feeding the babies, Xu Lin put them aside to play by themselves and then started working.
For several days in a row, the wolf cubs would come over with their parents to nurse. Xu Lin now just mixes formula in a bowl and lets them lick it.
The white wolves, who initially kept a close eye on Xu Lin and her group, now just drop off the children and leave, treating Xu Lin's place like a daycare center.
On the day the house was completed, Xu Lin not only treated herself and Zhou Pin to an extra meal, but also the dogs and pups. The two women, two dogs, and two wolves ate with their mouths greasy.
As usual, the dogs took their two puppies for a walk around the house. If Xu Lin hadn't stopped them in time, they would have tried to pee in every corner.
After the house was built, Xu Lin cleaned it inside and out, laid out a mattress and a four-piece bedding set. The bed was a wooden one she found in her space, which matched the wooden house perfectly. The mattress and bedding set were high-end items she had collected, and once laid out, it immediately gave off the feeling of a luxury homestay.
A desk was placed by the window, with a vase of wildflowers on it, creating a vibrant scene.
There was a small wardrobe in the room with a few clothes on it. There was also a bathroom in the room. Although the two of them were washing up in the space for now, they would definitely wash up in the wooden house after they settled down.
The next room is the kitchen and dining room, just big enough for two people to move around and eat. There's a shelf against the wall with a small amount of vegetables, rice, noodles, and oil on it, so Zhou Pin can cook even if Xu Lin isn't around.
Xu Lin chose an auspicious day from the perpetual calendar to move into her new home. Although it was just the two of them, they symbolically held a housewarming party, and Zhou Pin prepared several dishes.
Xu Lin's family's tradition of "warming the pot" involves relatives and friends sending chicken, fish, meat, wine, and other food items, as well as daily necessities such as plaques, mirrors, cooking utensils, and tea sets—virtually everything imaginable.
The gifts sent from the bride's family were mainly cooking utensils, such as pots and spoons, as well as a pair of roosters, two large carp, two catties of tofu, and two catties of bean sprouts.
These gifts all symbolize joy and good fortune: chicken represents great luck; fish represents surplus grain year after year; tofu is a homophone for "everyone gets rich," meaning to become wealthy; and bean sprouts symbolize taking root, sprouting, and growing.
Xu Lin prepared these gifts herself, as they all carried auspicious meanings.
The two of them ate eight dishes for lunch, and since they couldn't finish them, they could just put them away. Ultimately, everything was as long as they were happy.
After lunch, the two prepared to go up the mountain to take a look. Last time they had taken a quick trip, they had seen a lot of useful wild vegetables and Chinese medicinal herbs, so they went to collect them this time.
"Green pines on the mountain, flowers below; the flowers laugh at the pines, saying they are inferior to them." Xu Lin suddenly said this, "Have you heard of this?"
"What do you mean?" Zhou Pin asked.
The phrase "Green pines on the mountain, flowers below, the flowers laugh at the pines for being less than them" means that spring has arrived, and the wildflowers below the mountain are in full bloom, their blossoms vibrant, beautiful, and their fragrance spreading far and wide. They proudly raise their heads, mocking the monotonous and uninteresting pines on the mountaintop, which are devoid of flowers and fragrance.
"I've learned a lot," Zhou Pin said. "When we get to the top of the mountain, we'll cut down some pine trees and pick some wildflowers on the way down."
“You really know how to take things out of context,” Xu Lin said.
It took me a while to realize that Zhou Pin is actually very humorous, and he can become a close friend with anyone he wants to talk to. That's probably his personal charm.
Xu Lin was gradually captivated by his charm; this is probably what they mean by "starting with his looks, falling for his talent, and remaining loyal to his character."
