“I had the same idea. We have more and more supplies now, and other survivors will come later. We can’t leave at the same time. You guys go out first tomorrow. The three of us will stay at home. If there are any problems, contact each other by walkie-talkie. If we go out of range, we’ll use the beacon to send an alarm,” Sun Wei said.
The group reached a consensus on safety issues, and then Xu Lin and Zhou Pincai said goodbye and left.
Back home, the two tidied up the yard. The mushrooms and wood ear fungus that had been drying earlier could be put away, and the sheep and rabbits were fed grass.
One of the sheep is about to give birth, so we need to get Grandma Wu to come and check on it. Xu Lin didn't interfere when the lambs were born in the space before, letting them give birth on their own. Later, after chatting with Grandma Wu, she learned that livestock like cows and sheep need to be supervised during birth to prevent accidents. The previous successful birth was lucky.
The next morning, Xu Lin got up before dawn, not for any other reason than that she could finally go out and collect supplies again. The two of them made and ate some jianbing guozi (Chinese savory crepes) in the yard, and then set off with bamboo baskets, sickles, and machetes on their backs.
Shuke and Beta remained in the mountains to protect their meager supplies. Mainly, they didn't know what the outside world was like, and it wouldn't be convenient to bring the dogs along rashly.
After descending to the middle of the mountain, the water level had dropped considerably. Zhou Pin and Sun Wei set up a makeshift "dock" on the shore, and the two of them sailed away in a boat.
The boat looked like a fishing boat, with the same structure as the fishing boat they had rented in Jinshi before, and Zhou Pin immediately took over.
They planned to go out for two days to check out a nearby mountain. Xu Lin had previously observed through binoculars that people were gradually moving up several nearby mountains, so they would first go to the uninhabited mountain to collect some supplies.
The saying goes, "Looking at a mountain makes a horse run itself to death." It took the two three hours by boat to reach their destination. Along the way, their engine was entangled by an unknown creature, which they had to deal with.
They were located northeast of the hill where they lived. This hill was a little shorter than the one they lived on. The two went ashore, put the boat into their spatial storage, and began their hike.
The two of them only carried empty backpacks, so climbing the mountain was relatively easy. There were many small animals on the mountain, and after only half an hour of walking, they had already seen two rabbits, a chicken, a deer, and several squirrels.
Zhou Pin shot a rabbit and a chicken with a slingshot, Xu Lin shot a rabbit with an arrow, but the deer was too agile and got away before the two of them could catch it.
Xu Lin and her companions had no shortage of supplies. They came out to scout out the situation outside and pick up some supplies along the way. So, as they climbed the mountain, they observed the supplies on it. They found that the mountain was basically the same as the one where they lived: walnuts, pine nuts, chestnuts, apples, grapes, cherries, pears, apricots, mushrooms, wood ear fungus, and so on.
With plenty of time, the two picked the best-looking fruit from the trees and stored it in their space, and dug up any saplings they found to plant later. By noon, they had climbed halfway up the mountain and picked a basket of dates, two baskets of large apples, two baskets of mushrooms, and a plastic bag of wood ear fungus. They also caught two quails and a litter of rabbits.
They found a flat spot and sat down to rest. The mountain was rich in flora and fauna, but they didn't know why no one came up there. Perhaps it was in a remote location. After eating their boxed lunches, they were resting when they suddenly heard a sound coming from the woods next to them.
“This mountain has a lot of things, let’s take more back with us.”
"If you ask me, why don't we just move to this mountain? Why do we have to come here every day to collect supplies?"
"The village chief must have a reason for telling us to do this. Just do as we say, no need for so much nonsense."
