Xu Lin only learned that Wu Laotai was an expert in this field after she joined the seed research and development department of the base.
During the apocalypse, Old Lady Wu had just retired. Because Sun Wei and his wife were planning to have a child, she did not accept her employer's invitation to rehire her.
The improved seeds that Zhou Pin mentioned were revealed by Grandma Wu, and both families planned to buy some.
Regardless of whether there will be natural disasters in the future, there is hope as long as there are seeds.
During these turbulent days at the base, bookstores and teahouses were closed, and no one was in the mood for entertainment.
Xu Lin also took the opportunity to rest at home and harvest the vegetables she could from the garden.
Since the teahouse got busy, Zhou Pin has been managing the yard. Every morning, after watering or weeding, he goes to work, and when he comes back from work, he picks vegetables and cooks. When Xu Lin comes back, he puts the extra vegetables into his space.
After finishing her work in the yard, Xu Lin went to her space. She had a lot of food stored up for the animals, and fearing she wouldn't have time to prepare more later, she stored up some more.
Zhou Pin researched an automatic feeder, so as long as there is food, the animals in the space will not go hungry.
Two batches of livestock have already been processed and stored in separate rooms. The third batch is being raised now.
Xu Lin always felt relaxed whenever she came to the space. It was well-stocked, had a pleasant climate, and a comfortable environment. The only downside was that she could only stay for 30 days.
After finishing all that, Xu Lin started stocking up on food.
I spent three days making steamed corn bread, vegetable pancakes, and rice balls. The ingredients for these staple foods are all from the farm, so I can openly eat them in front of others in the future.
Besides that, Xu Lin also made hot milk tea, spicy soup, and various kinds of porridge, all of which were mild in flavor and unlikely to attract attention. As the weather grew colder, Xu Lin feared another bout of extreme cold.
Outside the space, I prepare mildly flavored dishes, while inside, I cook strongly flavored dishes like spicy chicken, shredded beef with double peppers, boiled fish, and braised pork. Every few days, I also process the chickens, ducks, geese, and pigs produced in the space, removing their feathers, cleaning them, and doing simple processing to save time later.
They often ate the vegetables from the space, and since they didn't have time to process the livestock, they would just slaughter them and pile them up in the room. This time, Xu Lin had some time and planned to use the pork produced by the space to make some food, firstly to store up food, and secondly to taste the difference between pork raised in the space and ordinary pork.
After the whole pig was divided up, Xu Lin made a pork stew for the two of them that evening, and the taste was indeed different, much tastier than ordinary pork.
The next day, Xu Lin cleaned the pig skin, rendered the pork fat, braised the pig's head, tail, and heart, and stewed the four pig's trotters for soup. She minced some of the pork for making dumplings later, and sliced, shredded, and diced the rest for cooking.
After finishing all that, it was 5 p.m. Xu Lin came out of the space and lay down on the sofa on the first floor to rest.
When Zhou Pin came home from get off work, he saw Xu Lin sprawled on the sofa, looking completely exhausted. He sat down on the sofa and started massaging her.
"It's basically over," Zhou Pin said to Xu Lin while giving her a massage.
"How so?" Xu Lin asked.
"The division of responsibilities between the east and west zones of the base has been completed. The project I was in charge of has been assigned to the west zone. I've resigned and won't be going to work tomorrow," Zhou Pin said.
"Will they agree?" Xu Lin was worried about retaliation.
"It's okay. I've been trying to minimize my presence these past few days. I've changed the credits on many projects. In their eyes, I'm practically invisible. They might even think I'm taking up their spots."
