With their trip delayed, the two decided to collect some supplies and check on the situation with those people, since they had nothing else to do anyway.
At 10 p.m., the two left the residential area, walked to a secluded spot, took out a black electric scooter, and headed to the HKU Sports Centre. Both of them were wearing night vision goggles, so they didn't even turn on the headlights, and no one could see them.
Twenty minutes later, they arrived near the University of Hong Kong. They put away the tram and walked. There was no one at the entrance; it seemed the two had been overly cautious. Xu Lin, a graduate of the University of Hong Kong, found getting to the sports stadium a piece of cake. She took a shortcut and arrived in just over ten minutes.
There were two people on duty at the entrance of the stadium, and the inside was brightly lit.
"These people are quite powerful; they even have a generator at this hour," Xu Lin remarked.
"They must have come here specifically to find something, otherwise they could have gone directly from Nanshi to Beijing, there would have been no need to detour through Gangcheng."
"Maybe the road over there is blocked?" Xu Lin deliberately quipped.
"If Nanshi is inaccessible, there's Binshi, which is closer than taking the detour to Gangcheng."
"You'll know once you listen to it in the future."
As the two approached the stadium, the two gatekeepers seemed bored. However, this might be a plot device in a novel, as gatekeepers often chat and reveal information.
"It's pitch black here, who's going to come? Even if they do, we can just shoot them. Why do we have to guard the gate? It's one thing to stand guard in the army, but to have to guard the gate when we're on a mission is just like being a watchdog!" one of the young men complained.
"Shut up and get your job done!"
"Squad leader, I'm just so frustrated! I'll take the gate, but why should that spoiled brat be allowed to come too! He's only here because his family has connections! We're here on a mission, and we have to go out of our way to pick him up and protect him, and he's still ungrateful. We're on the run, and he's still thinking about romance and kidnapping women..."
"What kind of novels are you reading? And you're even trying to abduct women."
"Although the wording isn't quite right, that's the gist of it. He goes and flirts with any pretty women he sees. What kind of jerk is he? Our people are out on missions, and he's throwing parties. It's the apocalypse, and he's still doing this!"
"The apocalypse affects ordinary people, but it won't have much impact on the powerful and wealthy. Okay, stop complaining, where's your professionalism?!"
The two fell silent. Xu Lin had a rough idea of what was going on; the military was on a mission and they had been assigned to escort a spoiled brat to Beijing from Jiang Province. She just didn't know what kind of mission they were on.
"While the troops are out on a mission, let's go in and investigate. I know a place we can get into. Come with me." This is Xu Lin's alma mater; she knows it like the back of her hand.
Xu Lin led Zhou Pin to the grove behind the stadium. The two climbed up the branches and could just reach a window on the second floor of the stadium.
This is a sports equipment room, usually empty. The windows are sliding windows, easy to open from the outside. There used to be surveillance cameras everywhere, so no one dared to come and steal anything. Now, well, that's how Xu Lin and her companion got their share.
Upon entering the equipment room, Xu Lin took everything without caring what was there. Then, she walked to the door and slowly opened it a crack; it was pitch black.
This area is all equipment rooms and no one is here. The young master should be in the gymnasium's lounge. That place sometimes receives visitors. The conditions are better, and even if it was flooded, it can be cleaned up and people can live there. So Xu Lin led Zhou Pin directly through the corridor to the lounge... and the tea room next to it.
This tea room is where tea and refreshments are prepared when foreign guests come. It's quite hidden and you might not find it if you're not looking carefully, but you can still clearly hear the conversations in the lounge, making it convenient to go in and serve tea and water.
