Chapter 106 Mutant Zombies

Zhang Shi occasionally fired a few arrows, clearing out any stragglers that managed to break through the edge of the fire wall. In a short time, his kill count surpassed 200. At this rate, he would complete the mission soon, and Zhang Shi secretly hoped for even more zombies.

Just as he was concentrating on firing his arrows, Pipi's urgent barking immediately alerted Zhang Shi.

Following the direction Pipi was staring, Zhang Shi activated his Focus ability to investigate. Sure enough, there was a gigantic mutated zombie there, also of high rank.

The zombie was conservatively estimated to be 2.5 meters tall, with a huge arm as tall as a person hanging down to the ground, assisting it to walk like a silverback gorilla. Its skin was a strange bluish-gray, looking as if it were coated with a layer of metallic paint.

In the still image, the zombie's arm and shoulder joints were highlighted. That area, similar to the "monkey" they'd seen before, also had a red growth. Zhang Shi guessed that this was likely where the worms were parasitizing, and probably the mutated zombie's weakness.

Upon seeing Zhang Shi on the roof, the tall zombie charged madly toward the gas station, sweeping away all obstacles and obstructions along its path, including its own kind.

Like a scavenger, it quickly cleared a path with brute force, and even when faced with the wall of fire, it still charged forward headlong. Perhaps because of its higher rank, the flames ignited it instantly, but it didn't seem to affect its progress. It simply roared at Zhang Shi, who was watching all this indifferently, and then accelerated forward.

After it caused this disturbance, many of the zombies behind broke through the encirclement.

Zhang Shi decisively activated the compound bow skill, unleashing a rain of arrows centered on the tall man. The ordinary zombies were covered in arrows, the sharp arrows easily piercing their flesh, turning them into sieves. Only the tall man remained unmoved by the arrow rain; the arrows struck him as if hitting steel, producing a clanging sound, proving difficult to penetrate his defenses.

Zhang Shi couldn't help but reassess the tall man's defensive capabilities and began to take the situation seriously.

The tall man seemed to be enraged by Zhang Shi's attack. With a swing of his massive arm, he easily destroyed the barbed wire in front of him and tried to continue forward.

Zhang Shi didn't give it that chance. He used Instant Step to move next to Pipi, triggering the damage buff. Then he drew back the bowstring with all his might to unleash Triple Strike, aiming the arrow at the fleshy growth on the tall man's shoulder.

The arrow struck the tall man's shoulder tumor with deadly accuracy, piercing it through. The tumor burst open like a water-filled balloon being punctured, spraying out streams of milky white pus in all directions.

The tall man collapsed to the ground as if all his strength had been drained, his entire body limp, and his giant arm severed from his body at the joint.

A moment later, just when Zhang Shi thought the tall man was dead, the severed arm suddenly began to writhe, like a giant python crawling on the ground. Its palm split into four parts, opening at an unbelievable angle like a man-eating flower, each fleshy part covered with tooth-like bone spurs.

At that moment, the arm bit down on a zombie that had broken through the encirclement, and then, like a hungry beast, swallowed the zombie's entire thigh. When it spat the thigh out again, the entire leg was devoid of flesh and blood, leaving only bare white bones.

At the tip of the iron arm, a series of connective tissues were rapidly growing. Zhang Shi frowned; this bizarre creature was completely beyond his comprehension. This time, Zhang Shi switched to a revolver, aimed at the iron arm, and fired a six-shot burst.

After six gunshots, Iron Arm was reduced to a pile of minced meat by the powerful firepower. Even from a distance, Zhang Shi noticed a giant worm, broken in two, rolling out of the minced meat, its body curled up in a ball, seemingly dead.

To be on the safe side, Zhang Shi fired another arrow at the worm, pinning it to the ground before stopping.

Seeing that the tall man was completely dead, Zhang Shi turned his arrows towards the swarming ordinary zombies. Suddenly, Pipi let out an urgent growl. Just as Zhang Shi was about to turn around to check, he was struck by a tremendous force, thrown to the ground, and nearly fell off the roof.

Zhang Shi wiped the spot where he was hit and pulled up a sticky substance resembling a spider web. The spider web emitted puffs of white smoke upon contact with the armor, and it seemed to have a strong corrosive effect.

Zhang Shi checked the condition of the armor and found no damage. The attack had only caused him to fall and had not caused any real harm.

Zhang Shi breathed a sigh of relief, then looked behind him.

It turned out that the attacker was a mutated zombie similar to a "monkey." It clung to the building behind the gas station, using both its hands and feet, like a spider. The most obvious difference between it and the "monkey" was the location of the red growth; this "spider's" growth was on its chest and abdomen.

Zhang Shi quickly adjusted his posture and shot an arrow at the spider.

The spider's crawling posture perfectly concealed most of the tumor, limiting Zhang Shi's shooting angle. The spider, seemingly quite agile, twisted its body and dodged the arrow.

Zhang Shi's arrows were quite powerful; they struck the exterior wall of the building, shattering the bricks and stones to expose the concrete underneath.

Zhang Shi had a sudden inspiration and secretly planned to try to knock down some of these bricks and stones and take them back with him before leaving.

Enraged by Zhang Shi's attack, the spider's gills swelled up, and then a ball of white spider web shot out of its mouth towards Zhang Shi.

The spider web wasn't flying fast, and Zhang Shi easily dodged it. Then came a barrage of arrows. Although the spider was agile, it couldn't escape death. An arrow pierced through its back, piercing the fleshy growth on its chest, and the parasitic worms inside its body were shattered by the powerful impact.

After this little incident, Zhang Shi gained some understanding of some of the mutated zombies. From sunrise to high noon, Zhang Shi didn't even have a chance to use Lao Duan's weapon; he dealt with the entire horde of zombies solely through traps and his bow and arrows.

After taking down several more mutated zombies, Zhang Shi was only 100 kills away from his mission objective of 1,000 kills.

"A tall one has 50 kills, a spider has 20, and the monkey has the fewest, only 10..."

Zhang Shi packed up his weapons and equipment, returned to the gas station to eat, and while calculating the number of kills he had gained from killing mutated zombies, he also replenished his stamina.

The zombie eradication operation went extremely smoothly, and Zhang Shi was close to achieving his mission objective in just three hours.

"Unfortunately, I've wiped out all the zombies in this neighborhood. Pipi, let's go and find another place to kill more zombies."

Zhang Shi threw away the half-eaten bread slice and left the street littered with corpses with Pipi.
