Chapter 13: Forest

Chapter 13 Shanlin

Grandpa Ling was also heartbroken, but he quickly realized Jin Sui's intention, looked at the blue mark on Jin An's chest carefully and said:

"You two go first, I'll take care of it."

He carried with him many small items used by Taoists, including colors and carving knives.

Jin'an was a smart child. One look at the body that tripped him and he understood what his grandfather was going to do.

He took off his Taoist robe first, then took off his inner clothes and handed them to Grandpa:

"He is dying for me, so let him wear this dress!"

The male corpse was naked from the waist up, and it was obvious that his clothes had been stripped off after his death.

Jin Sui knew that Grandpa Ling asked them to go first because he didn't want them to see that scene. He led Jin An to hide further away, while watching the torches in the valley warily.

As long as someone approaches, we will not care whether the plan succeeds or not, we must take Grandpa Ling away first.

Fortunately, the torches were still circling in the valley and no one had passed through the dense forest.

Grandpa Ling's hands were very fast. He rushed over in just a quarter of an hour: "Let's go! As long as they find the body a day later, we can get away with it."

The three men walked in the dark in the forest for a long time, but because there was no road, their clothes were either caught on thorns or they slipped and fell into ditches.

Jin Sui was worried that Grandpa Ling might get hurt. She heard the roar of wild beasts coming from deep in the forest at night, so she made a prompt decision:

"Grandpa, let's hide first and leave at daybreak. There are many ferocious beasts in the forest. If we accidentally walk into a tiger's den, it will be even more troublesome."

She was worried about Grandpa Ling, and Grandpa Ling was worried about Jin'an.

The child had not eaten or slept well for many days, and had just experienced the death of his mother. He was then taken by them to walk on the mountain road in fear.

Grandpa Ling agreed to stop and rest. This time he did not tell fortunes, but used his experience to find a stone wall sheltered from the wind.

The three of them could barely huddle behind the stone wall to rest. Without a blanket, Grandpa Ling took off his outer robe and put it on Jin'an, letting Jin'an lean on his arms to sleep.

They didn't dare light a bonfire for fear of attracting soldiers in the valley.

Jin Sui felt that if they stayed in the cold all night, the three of them would definitely fall ill. She didn't care whether Grandpa Ling would suspect her.

Turning around, he said, "I'm going to find some hay nearby to keep warm."

Grandpa Ling warned: "Don't go too far."

Jin Sui simply went around the stone wall and lightly touched his palm, allowing the colorful light to engulf him.

She had opened all the cabinets in the laboratory and knew the placement of everything by heart.

First, go to your own lounge, grab a thick blanket, and roll it in along with the bed sheet.

It was a pity that she had no clothes. Next time she passed by the market, she would definitely buy some more clothes without Grandpa Ling’s knowledge and stockpile them.

There were no ready-made clothes for sale in the small market before. If she bought cloth, she was worried that Grandpa Ling would find out that his granddaughter suddenly couldn't do needlework.

He took three pieces of bread that he had stockpiled earlier, two bottles of sugar water, and then thought about it and found a knife that could be used as a weapon, and then he came out immediately.

She handed the thick blanket to Grandpa Ling and made up a lame excuse: "It seems that someone had hidden here before and left some things to keep warm."

Grandpa Ling touched the clean and warm blanket, glanced at Jin Sui, and chuckled, "Then we are quite lucky! You can come in too, have a good sleep, and leave as soon as the sun rises."

Jinsui put the bed sheet on the ground and sat down next to Jinan, leaning against the stone wall. He couldn't sleep with so many things in his mind!

Thinking of Jiang's expression before her death, thinking of the difficult task of clearing Ling's father's name, thinking of what he had encountered since he traveled through time, he felt sad.

But seeing Grandpa Ling's graying hair and Jin'an's tender little face, what can I do? Since I've used someone else's body, I have to take responsibility and roll up my sleeves to do it!

At least we have the laboratory to support us, so we can always get by.

The dawn in April means heavy dew, and the blanket becomes wet at daybreak.

Grandpa Ling was the first to wake up. He looked at his grandson's sleeping face with affection, touched his head and neck, and made sure that the child was fine.

He looked at Jinsui again, this time with some profound meaning, filled with love for his granddaughter, some admiration, and an incomprehensible fear.

Looking at the flowers all over her body, I couldn't tell if it was a thick blanket made of wool or cotton.

Grandpa Ling pondered for a moment, as if he had made up his mind. The admiration and fear in his eyes faded away, leaving only love and pity.

He gently pushed Jinsui: "Girl, wake up."

Jin Sui woke up suddenly and found herself sleeping in the wilderness. For a moment, she thought she was dreaming.

The world was vast, and she felt as if she had been thrown from the 21st century into a primeval forest.

At this moment, she missed her previous life very much.

She didn't have much time to reflect. She had to leave the area as soon as possible. Only when she was out of the city of Los Angeles would she be safe.

But before setting off, you have to eat your fill.

The morning fog was thick and visibility was extremely low, but the good thing was that the smoke from the campfire would not be noticed.

The grandfather and grandson quickly gathered some dead branches and lit a fire. Grandpa Ling split a bamboo tube to boil water, while Jinsui grilled the dough cakes on bamboo sticks.

Jinan woke up smelling the aroma of food.

The child looked at the blanket on his body, the sheets beneath him, and then at the pancake in his sister's hand.

Surprised and delighted, he asked, "Where did these things come from?"

Grandpa Ling was the first to say, “Someone hid here before and stayed here.”

Jin Sui raised the cake in his hand and added, "My grandfather and I bought this in town, but I never had the heart to eat it."

She looked at Grandpa Ling with a guilty conscience. The old man actually believed her lie so easily.

Grandpa Ling folded the blanket into a tofu block, used the bed sheet as a rope to tie it into a bundle, and said with a smile:

"We can't throw this away. The three of us, grandfather and grandson, are relying on this to avoid freezing to death in the mountains."

Jin Sui originally wanted to be lazy and put it back in the space, and take it out when he needed it at night. Now it seems that he can only carry it without complaint.

She melted the energy bars, spread them on the pancakes, and drank the bamboo-scented sugar water. The three generations of grandparents and grandchildren were very satisfied with the meal.

After finding Jin'an, Grandpa Ling's tense spirit relaxed a lot. Even though the three of them were now stranded in the wilderness, he was no longer anxious or nervous.

She also cut some bamboo to make simple hunting tools, and said with a smile that the brother and sister were too thin and could not eat snacks and bread all the time, but needed to eat meat to supplement their diet.

When the fog dissipated, the mountain road became clear and much easier to walk on.

It was impossible to walk fast in the deep mountains, and one had to be on guard against snakes and insects. Jin Sui divided the insect repellent he had prepared into three portions, wrapped them in cloth and hung them around the waists of the three people.

When they came across a wild fruit tree on the road, Grandpa Ling took the lead and stopped to pick some.

If there are fruits that I don’t recognize, I teach the siblings that they can only pick those that are eaten by birds. Those that birds won’t eat are definitely poisonous.

There were many wild animals in the forests in spring, but unfortunately the three men didn't even catch a pheasant or a rabbit, and they also saw the corpses of several large herbivores that had been eaten.

Knowing that there were wild animals nearby, he left quickly.

However, they caught fish in the mountain stream, Jin'an picked up bird eggs by climbing a tree, and Jinsui picked many edible wild mushrooms.

Grandpa Ling also used mud to make a pottery pot, and he baked it successfully. With this pottery pot, the diet became much richer.

Fish is no longer grilled, but can be stewed into soup. Drinking a bowl of hot soup in the morning and evening warms the whole body and makes the night less cold.

Jinan felt very strange because her sister's cloth bag for food seemed to never be empty.

Every day he would take out extremely sweet snacks and pancakes. My sister would pick mushrooms and even fruits and vegetables that grandpa wouldn’t recognize.

Like the red fruit that looks like a persimmon, it makes a sour and sweet soup. If you add a wild bird egg to it, it will be very delicious.

There is also a food that my sister named "potato", which is delicious whether it is roasted or boiled.

Jin An asked curiously, and Jin Sui pretended to be mysterious and said:

"We women are naturally good at hiding things. You can't learn this skill."

Grandpa Ling agreed with a smile. Fortunately, Jinsui had hidden some food in advance, otherwise the three of them would have to eat wild fruits to save their lives.
