The next morning, Xu Lai took Xu Yan to town on her electric scooter and waited with him for the bus.
Xu Lai instructed, "Take care of yourself while you're away. Eat the food you brought over as soon as possible, or it will spoil."
Xu Yan turned around, afraid that if his sister saw him about to cry, she would laugh at him mercilessly.
He nodded. "I know, you too."
Looking at Xu Yan, who was now a head taller than her, Xu Lai found it hard to connect him with the little tagalong she used to be.
When she was little, she knew that her parents were a little biased, and that they were obviously nicer to Xu Yan than to her. She accused them of favoritism, and her father scolded her: "You ungrateful wretch! I feed you and clothe you, and this is how you treat us?"
Xu Lai was speechless at the time. She was sorely offended by her own child and tried to get back at him by touching on his sore spot. After that, she never brought up the topic of favoritism again.
Zhao Qingyun was driving to work when he saw two familiar people waiting at the intersection. He stopped the car, rolled down the window, and asked, "Are you going to the county town?"
Xu Lai was still recalling when she suddenly came to her senses. She looked at Zhao Qingyun and replied, "Yes, Xu Yan is going back to school. I'll see him off on the bus."
Zhao Qingyun got out of the car, walked up to them, and asked, "Want to ride in my car? I'm going to work anyway."
Xu Yan turned his head to look at his sister. Xu Lai thought about it and felt that this was a good idea, otherwise they didn't know how long they would have to wait here.
Xu Lai smiled sheepishly and said, "Then I'll trouble you."
She was about to put Xu Yan's bag in the trunk when Zhao Qingyun took it from her and said, "Let me do it, Xu Yan, you get in the car first."
Before getting into the car, Xu Yan gave his sister a hug. "Sis, I'll come back when I have time. See you next time."
Xu Lai patted him on the back and said, "I know, don't worry about home, just focus on your own path."
Xu Lai thought to herself, "I hope you can truly grow up."
Zhao Qingyun got into the car and reminded him, "Xu Yan, get in the car." A hug is enough, why hug for so long?
Xu Lai watched the car drive away until it was completely out of sight before hopping on her electric scooter to go to the market to buy groceries.
Her feelings for Xu Yan were complicated. Because of her parents' favoritism, she used to target him a lot. Xu Yan wasn't as sensible as he is now; he would always talk back to her. The two of them had been fighting since they were little.
Now that we've had a brief reunion, watching him leave, I still feel a little reluctant to let him go.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Xu Yan looked at the people watching the car and asked curiously, "Brother Qingyun, do you have feelings for my sister?"
Zhao Qingyun almost stepped on the gas, but he steadied himself and asked, "You know that?"
Now it was Xu Yan's turn to get anxious. "Holy crap, really? I guessed right?"
Zhao Qingyun looked at him, puzzled. Xu Yan scratched his head and said, "I was just joking, I didn't expect..."
Zhao Qingyun quietly chimed in, "Didn't expect to trick me out, did you?"
Xu Yan started to talk more: "Brother, if you really like my sister, then you should take the initiative to pursue her. My sister is the kind of person who is not willing to take the initiative. She always keeps herself in her comfort zone. Even if you take ninety-nine steps toward her, she will still hesitate to take the last step."
Zhao Qingyun nodded, then saw the person off at the high-speed rail station, saying, "Take care of your own affairs and don't pry into the business of adults."
Xu, who is 21 years old and about to turn 22, said that he was still a child. Before he could even start arguing, Zhao Qingyun got into the car and left.
Xu Lai plans to soak some soybeans today and make tofu tomorrow. There are still a lot of soybeans left at home. Every year, her grandparents work hard to grow vegetables, but they never have time to come back and eat them.
