Chapter 16 Stone Mill

After dinner, she lay on the beanbag chair on the balcony, leisurely drinking tea, with a small plate of fruit on the small table next to her.

Zhao Qingyun saw this scene as soon as he came out of the room. He turned around and took a piece of paper from the room. It was a suggestion he had written down beforehand for shooting short videos, which he hadn't given to her yet.

He leaned against the balcony railing and called out, "Xu Lai, come here for a second, I need to talk to you about something."

Xu Lai pointed to herself: "You want me to come over?"

Zhao Qingyun nodded: "Yes, it's you I'm calling."

She put down her phone, leaned closer, and asked, "What's up?"

He handed over the paper and said, "I watched your short video last time, and here are some suggestions for you."

Xu Lai was surprised that he actually went to see it, and she immediately felt a little awkward. She took it and said, "Thank you so much. You're so busy every day, yet you still wrote this for me."

Zhao Qingyun touched his nose and said, "No, I just wrote it randomly."

Xu Lai returned to her room and unfolded the folded paper. Zhao Qingyun's handwriting reflected his personality—calm and sharp. She read it carefully, making some plans in her mind.

Zhao Qingyun mentioned the issue of appearing on camera. In Xu Lai's videos, she is never on camera, which reduces the audience, as many people may mistake her videos for cooking tutorials.

Another problem is the lack of distinctive features. He wrote on the paper, "You can try adding a sentence at the beginning so that everyone will know that this video is about you."

She considered whether or not to appear on camera, because she felt a little awkward in front of the lens.

However, the number of views was indeed quite low, and the number of fans remained stagnant. After thinking about it, she decided to film an on-camera video first to see how things went.

Xu Lai got up quite early the next day. She took a hairband, tied it into a braid, put on some light makeup, and then prepared to go downstairs for breakfast.

When Grandma saw her come down, her eyes lit up and she praised, "Our Lai Lai looks so beautiful today."

Xu Lai joked, "Grandma, aren't you pretty normally?"

Grandma answered earnestly, "You look good every day, but Grandma thinks you look best today."

Xu Lai sat down to eat. Today's breakfast was porridge that had been set in the rice cooker yesterday, along with pickled cowpeas from home. Grandma also steamed some Qingming cakes.

Xu Lai took a bite of a green rice dumpling and said in a muffled voice, "Grandma, does anyone in our village have a stone mill? I'm planning to grind some beans today and make tofu."

Grandma thought for a moment and said, "The village chief's family has some, but he doesn't seem to be home. He's out in a meeting. The Jiang family next door also has some, but they probably haven't used them in a long time."

Xu Lai still planned to ask next door. She knocked on the door and Zhao Qingyun was about to have breakfast. He had just finished running and taking a shower. The old lady had made noodles by herself today, so he didn't go out to buy breakfast.

When Grandma Jiang saw her coming, she asked with a smile, "Xiao Lai, have you had breakfast yet?"

Xu Lai nodded: "Grandma Jiang, I've already eaten. I came to ask if your stone mill is still usable?"

Grandma Jiang thought for a moment and said, "It can be used, but it hasn't been used for too long and has accumulated a thick layer of dust, so it's a bit troublesome to wash."

Xu Lai laughed: "It's okay, it's okay, as long as it works. I thought all those beans I soaked were a waste."

Zhao Qingyun ate his noodles silently until Grandma Jiang called out to him, "Qingyun, you didn't go to work today either. Help Xiaolai carry that stone mill out and wash it later."

Zhao Qingyun was about to agree when Xu Lai interrupted, "No need to trouble yourself, I can do it myself."

Zhao Qingyun put down his chopsticks, then picked them up again, looking rather helpless. Grandma Jiang explained, "That one is very heavy, let him do it, he's strong."
