Xu Lai didn't believe it. She thought it didn't look that heavy, so she went over and tried to move it herself. But she couldn't budge it at all. Zhao Qingyun had a "See? I knew this would happen" look on her face.
He stood up, walked to her side, and watched her move the load with his hands on his hips. Xu Lai tried several times but eventually gave up. She looked up at him and said, "You do it."
Zhao Qingyun chuckled, and with a forceful lift of both hands, he raised the stone mill.
He placed it in the yard and asked, "Is it okay to put it here?"
Xu Lai nodded. She felt bad asking him to move it next door, since it was too heavy and she would have to carry it back. She didn't want to trouble him any further.
The stone mill hadn't been used for a long time and was full of dust. Xu Lai went home to get a brush, intending to clean it. She looked at the person lying on the chair reading a book and asked, "May I use your water?"
Zhao Qingyun, with one hand behind her head, clicked her tongue upon hearing this and said, "Use it yourself. Don't ask me about everything. Our two families aren't so unfamiliar that we have to ask each other even for water."
Xu Lai said "Oh," not understanding why he had retorted when she asked a question. Was he in a bad mood today?
After cleaning the stone mill, she straightened her back. She had been bending over to wash, and her back was very sore. Xu Lai looked at the man over there; he had been there for as long as she had been washing.
After washing the stone mill, she went home, brought over the beans, and then took two buckets to store the ground pulp.
Xu Lai set up her phone and began to explain: "Today we're making tofu. What steps do soybeans go through to become the tofu we eat?"
She scooped up a ladle of beans, turned the millstone handle with her right hand, added water with her left hand, and said to the camera, "This step is to make the beans grind finer."
As Xu Lai was speaking, a soft laugh suddenly came from the other end. Xu Lai intended to ignore him and continue, "Don't think that everyone..." Before she could finish speaking, she turned around and shouted, "Zhao Qingyun! Can you go back to your own room or do your own thing? Don't bother me while I'm filming, okay? This clip is ruined again."
Zhao Qingyun was initially laughing at her serious demeanor. It was the first time he had seen Xu Lai filming a video, and he felt that she was a bit tense, which was quite different from her usual self.
As a result, he was scolded, and he was still confused. After Xu Lai finished speaking, he turned around and continued grinding, and said again: "Don't think that this step is very tedious. Tofu made by hand is different from tofu made by machine. Of course, if you don't have the time, you can use a machine, or there is a more convenient way, go to the market to buy it."
Xu Lai rubbed for more than ten minutes until her wrists ached. She shook her wrists and switched to her other hand to continue rubbing.
Zhao Qingyun noticed her movements. He put down his book, took a small stool, and sat down opposite her. This position allowed him to help her grind beans without being seen on camera.
Xu Lai was about to switch hands when she noticed him leaning closer. She asked in confusion, "Are you coming to help me?"
Zhao Qingyun's hands had already started pushing the millstone. He raised an eyebrow and said, "Can't you tell? I can't possibly be doing arm exercises."
Xu Lai pursed her lips. This person's mouth was truly poisoned; not a single kind word came out. He was clearly helping her, yet she couldn't bring herself to say thank you.
After grinding for about an hour and a half, the beans were almost gone. Xu Lai finished grinding the last bit, stood up, and stretched. Zhao Qingyun got up, washed his hands, and asked, "Shall I help you move it over?"
Xu Lai no longer said no, she simply couldn't carry those two large buckets of soy milk.
