Chapter 24 Steamed Buns

In their village, there are also tea trees with the largest planting area. In October, tea seeds will grow on the trees, and the villagers will pick the tea seeds, dry them, and use them to press oil.

Xu Lai remembers that when she was a child, her grandmother often went to the mountains to pick tea seeds. After the mountain owner had picked most of the tea seeds from the trees, her grandmother would carefully look for the ones that had not been picked.

She used to dislike this thing because after it was dried, the shell became very hard and difficult to peel, often causing her fingers to break.

As she walked and reminisced, Xu Lai caught a faint scent of locust blossoms and knew she had arrived. She looked up and saw clusters of locust blossoms in full bloom.

Xu Lai tiptoed to reach the shorter flowers, picked two large bunches, smelled them, and squinted her eyes comfortably.

She fixed her phone and started filming the locust blossoms. She saw the flowers blooming beautifully high up, fresh and large. She picked up a stick to reach them, but missed. Xu Lai felt frustrated, seeing them but unable to have them.

Xu Lai looked at the tree trunk, hesitated, but finally stepped on it. With a flick of her wrist, she pulled down the branch covered in locust blossoms.

She finally picked two large bags full before going home satisfied.

Back home, Xu Lai searched online for ways to eat locust flowers. She had picked a lot this time, but she was afraid she wouldn't be able to use them all up if she only made locust flower buns and steamed locust flowers.

Xu Lai washed all the locust flowers clean and said, "Let's make steamed locust flowers first. Prepare 500 grams of locust flowers and 100 grams of flour. Let the locust flowers dry, add flour and mix well. Steam for eight minutes, then stir while hot and add the prepared sauce. It's ready to eat."

While the locust flowers were steaming, Xu Lai took out some flour and kneaded the dough herself. She didn't eat noodles often, so she wasn't very good at making dough. She followed the online tutorials step by step.

Once the locust flowers are prepared and the dough is kneaded, we just wait for it to ferment slowly.

Xu Lai tasted the steamed locust flowers. She couldn't quite describe the flavor; it had a sweet aroma, but the taste was somewhat different from what she had imagined.

Next, stir-fry the filling for the buns. Blanch the locust flowers for a few dozen seconds, then take them out. Scramble the eggs, add the chopped glass noodles, and mix them with the locust flowers.

After preparing the filling, the dough had risen enough. She kneaded the dough to release the air, then pinched it into small pieces and rolled them out with a rolling pin.

Xu Lai scooped a spoonful of locust flowers onto the dough and pinched it into pleats. The first one was so-so and didn't look very good. Xu Lai was amused by what she had made, but the second one was much better, and she became more and more skilled after that.

It took her half an hour to finish wrapping all the fillings. She counted them; there were twenty-five in total.

After the dough had risen a second time in the steamer, Xu Lai added a piece of firewood to the wood-fired stove and steamed the buns until they were cooked.

When the time came, the kitchen was filled with the sweet fragrance of locust blossoms. Xu Lai took a deep sniff and found she quite liked the smell.

She used some of the remaining locust flowers to stir-fry with eggs, and planned to dry the rest to make tea.

After the steamed buns cooled, Xu Lai took a plate, filled it with seven or eight buns, and took them to her neighbor's house, along with a bag of locust flowers.

"Grandma Jiang, I made some locust flower buns. Try them. I also have some fresh locust flowers. You can have them cooked however you like." Xu Lai deliberately chose this time; he hadn't gotten off work yet, so she definitely wouldn't run into him.

Grandma Jiang exclaimed with delight, "Locust flower buns! I don't know how long it's been since I've had them!"

Xu Lai smiled and said, "Then you should eat more and don't leave any for him."

Grandma Jiang happily agreed, and Xu Lai chatted with her for a while. Seeing that it was almost time to get off work, she quickly slipped away.
