For dinner, Xu Lai made stir-fried locust flowers with eggs and braised chicken wings. Her family doesn't like sweet and sour dishes, so she had never tried making cola chicken wings before.
Because there were steamed buns for dinner, Xu Lai didn't cook rice, only some noodles. She broke open a steamed bun, and the fragrance of locust blossoms wafted out. Xu Lai gave half to her grandmother and took a bite of the other half herself.
It was clear that Grandpa and Grandma enjoyed the food; after dinner, they each took a steamed bun and sat at the doorway to eat it.
Zhao Qingyun worked overtime today, and by the time he got home it was completely dark. His grandmother had already finished dinner and left him a few big steamed buns and a dish of pickles.
Zhao Qingyun frowned, her voice displeased, "Grandma, I didn't come home for dinner, is this all you're having for dinner?"
The old lady was watching TV when she heard this and said, "What do you mean? What's wrong with me eating steamed buns? I also stir-fried locust flower eggs. This meal is much tastier than before."
Zhao Qingyun sighed and then explained, "I didn't say you can't eat it, but this bun doesn't have much nutrition. You should eat more meat at every meal."
Grandma laughed again: "Eggs are meat too."
Zhao Qingyun took a steamed bun, took a bite, chewed it, and felt that the taste was different from usual. She asked, "Grandma, this shouldn't be something you made yourself, right?"
Grandma Jiang pointed to the next room: "Can't you taste the difference?"
He suddenly realized and said that besides her, no one else regularly sent things here, and the taste of her food was really different from others. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but it was unique.
The past few days have been cloudy, and it started to drizzle at night. Xu Lai listened to the pattering rain outside the window and was a little worried about her flowers. After thinking it over again, she decided to go to the balcony and bring the flowers back.
Because it was quite late, she didn't turn on the balcony light and went there with a flashlight. As a result, she saw a person standing on the next balcony with a burning cigarette between his fingers.
Xu Lai was about to call him when she slipped and fell to the ground with a thud, her hand hitting the wall next to her and getting a few small cuts.
Zhao Qingyun had come out for a smoke because he couldn't sleep, but he didn't expect to encounter this situation. He put out his cigarette and asked, "Are you alright? Where did you fall?"
Xu Lai was in so much pain in her buttocks that she couldn't speak. Zhao Qingyun was a little worried about her, so she took the flowers to her side and said, "I've come to check on her."
Xu Lai was still wondering how he was going to get here. If he went through the front door, his grandmother and the others would be asleep and no one would open it for him. She couldn't even stand up right now.
As she was thinking, she saw the person step onto the balcony and jump over. She was so frightened that she stopped crying, and her buttocks stopped hurting. This was the second floor! What if she lost her footing and fell, breaking her leg?
Zhao Qingyun grabbed her arm and pulled her up. He looked at her injuries; there were several cuts on her right arm, not deep, just scrapes.
Xu Lai blushed; her pants were soaked. Why was there so much water on the balcony?
Xu Lai said softly, "I'm fine, I just fell down. You can go back now."
Seeing that she hadn't stood up for a long time, Zhao Qingyun was very worried and was determined to get to the bottom of it.
Xu Lai covered her face and said, "You fell and hurt your butt, are you satisfied now? So can we go now?"
Zhao Qingyun coughed awkwardly twice, then said, "I'm sorry, I was just worried about you. I apologize, I'll leave now." Then he stepped back.
Xu Lai returned to her room, her clothes almost completely soaked. She took another shower, then applied some alcohol to the broken skin to disinfect it. Before going to bed, Xu Lai remembered that she hadn't put her flowers in yet. She sighed and decided to go out for a bit.
As soon as I opened the door, I saw a row of flowers outside, and her flowers were placed very neatly.
Xu Lai knew without a doubt who had helped her. She smiled and muttered to herself, "I'll forgive you for seeing my embarrassing state for now."
The next morning, it was still raining outside. Xu Lai frowned. It was inconvenient to ride her electric scooter to buy groceries. There were traffic police everywhere in town checking for people riding without helmets or sunshades on their scooters. She didn't dare to break the rules.
Just as she was about to walk to town, Zhao Qingyun parked his car at the door and called out, "It's raining today. I'm going to the market to buy groceries. Can I give you a ride?"
Xu Lai was overjoyed. She grabbed an umbrella and tried to move to the back seat, but the door wouldn't open after a couple of pulls. Xu Lai had to knock on the window, and Zhao Qingyun rolled it down and said, "Sit in the front. I don't like it when the passenger seat is empty."
Xu Lai wondered what the reason was, but she still opened the door and got into the car. Just as she fastened her seatbelt, the other party stepped on the gas and drove off.
The atmosphere in the car froze. Xu Lai tried to make conversation, asking, "Aren't you going to work today?"
Zhao Qingyun hummed in agreement, then realized she hadn't said enough, and added, "We get weekends off."
Xu Lai let out an "oh," thinking that his company was really conscientious, and the conversation ended again. Fortunately, the journey was not far, and they arrived at the vegetable market in no time.
Zhao Qingyun parked the car and asked, "Shall we go together or separately?"
Xu Lai thought for a moment and said, "How about we split up? I need to buy a lot of things, and I'm afraid you'll get bored if you keep following me." The rain is expected to last for a few more days, so she plans to buy groceries for three or four days at once.
Zhao Qingyun had already started walking, saying as she went, "It's okay, I'll buy it for you, so you won't be able to carry it."
Xu Lai was touched by his thoughtfulness and didn't say anything more. She went to the stall to buy the vegetables she wanted.
