Chapter 38 I'll be a dog if I lie to you

Zhao Qingyun repeated it, enunciating each word clearly: "Bin, Li, Ge?"

Xu Lai knew when to stop. Just then, the owner brought the noodles to the table. Xu Lai took a pair of chopsticks, wiped them with a napkin, and handed them to the owner, saying, "Eat quickly, or they'll get cold."

Zhao Qingyun took it, but his eyes remained fixed on her. Xu Lai lowered her head, not daring to meet his gaze.

Their food arrived one after another. Xu Lai pushed the xiaolongbao to the center, poured some vinegar into a small dish, added some chili oil, and pointed to it, saying, "Try dipping the xiaolongbao in this; it's delicious."

Zhao Qingyun picked up a piece with some skepticism, but Xu Lai, seeing that he was not eating it, urged him, "Try it and see, I'd be a dog if I lied to you."

Zhao Qingyun smiled, took a bite of the xiaolongbao, and first tasted a slightly sour and spicy flavor, followed by the unique meaty aroma of the filling. He admitted that it was indeed delicious.

Xu Lai could tell from his expression that she hadn't lied to him, so she smiled and asked, "So, did I tell you I wasn't lying?"

Zhao Qingyun drank the soup, picked up the spoon, and said, "There's absolutely no need for you to do this. The initiative is with me. If I think it's delicious, then it's delicious. If I say it's not delicious, then you're a dog."

Xu Lai kicked his shoe under the table and said, "How can you be like this? Isn't this just blatant lying?"

After the two finished taking care of their things, Zhao Qingyun asked, "Shall we go pick them up now?"

Xu Lai was momentarily stunned by his words and asked, somewhat bewildered, "Who are you picking up?"

Zhao Qingyun looked somewhat helpless and asked, "What do you think? You don't want your two dogs anymore?"

Xu Lai realized he was talking about dogs, and she couldn't help but think to herself, "If you're going to pick up a dog, just pick up a dog. Why say you're picking up 'them'? The subject is unclear."

There happened to be a supermarket nearby, and Xu Lai wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to buy some groceries. She called out to the person walking towards the car, "I'd like to buy some groceries, wanna come along?"

Zhao Qingyun tilted her head slightly in that direction, signaling her to follow, and then walked towards the supermarket first.

Xu Lai pushed a shopping cart and bought some potato chips and spicy strips. She hadn't eaten these since she came back, so she bought some to try when she saw them.

Zhao Qingyun took some things and threw them into the car. Xu Lai was afraid that they wouldn't be able to tell them apart, so she pushed his things aside and the two separated.

Seeing that the duck wings and other duck products looked quite fresh, Xu Lai took some of each, intending to recreate Zhou Hei Ya (a brand of braised duck) at home. She didn't like eating duck heads and originally didn't plan to buy any, but thinking that her grandparents loved them, she took a few.

Passing by the vegetable section, I also bought some lotus root, potatoes, and kelp, which can be braised and eaten.

Zhao Qingyun bought some groceries casually. He didn't go home for lunch, and bought dishes that his mother liked. When he saw Xu Lai buying so much, he shook his head and wondered if she had a recipe in her head.

Xu Lai strolled to the seafood section, where crayfish were already being sold in the tanks. The first batch had already come out, so she could finally have her first crayfish meal of the year. She grabbed a bag and filled it with a large amount of crayfish. At the price of over twenty yuan per pound, she was too lazy to choose them one by one and bought four pounds directly.

Seeing that the fruit in the supermarket was quite fresh, she took two boxes of cherry tomatoes, one box of Shine Muscat grapes, and some apples for her grandparents.

When it came time to pay, Xu Lai's belongings filled three shopping bags.

Zhao Qingyun carried her small bag in one hand and took the two bags from Xu Lai in the other. She followed behind him and said, "We're having crayfish tonight. You and Grandma Jiang should come over. I bought a lot."

Zhao Qingyun did not agree immediately, saying, "You can ask the old lady when we get back."

Xu Lai put her things in the trunk, and upon hearing this, she almost laughed and asked, "Aren't you coming?"

Zhao Qingyun opened the car door and got in, and Xu Lai also got in. He answered the question from before: "I thought you already knew the answer."

Xu Lai smiled and said, "Let's go back and clean the crayfish together."

The two picked up the dogs from the vet and put them in the trunk. Zhao Qingyun patted the dog's head and asked, "What are their names?"

Xu Lai was speechless: "Did they make a sound just now? They didn't even utter a single whimper."

Zhao Qingyun's arms were shaking from laughing, and Xu Lai found it inexplicable: "What are you laughing at?"

Zhao Qingyun explained, "I'm asking you, what are their names?"

Xu Lai made a mental note of this; it was the second time, and he was always being vague, making her confused about his meaning.
